2 . In the fall of 2017, when Naomi needed to get a job, she found herself at a crossroads. The 50-year-old wasn’t sure she would ever work again, due to health issues.
But Naomi’s life and career journey started to turn around after she connected with Bestwill of Central Iowa’s skills training programs. These programs are tailored to help people develop the kind of specific, real-world skills they need to get or keep a job, through a combination of detailed instructions and hands-on experience.
When Naomi first connected with Bestwill in September 2017, she was dealing with several barriers to immediate employment. Transportation was challenging, as she didn’t have a driver’s license or own a car. Naomi also had a limited work history with long employment gaps, meaning she missed out on learning important skills, such as working a credit card machine. On top of that, her physical health issues were also a problem.
According to Duff, a career specialist at Bestwill of Central Iowa, the biggest barrier Naomi had to overcome was from within. “She said outwardly that she had all of this confidence and that she knew how strong a worker she was, but I don’t think she truly believed it herself.”
Thankfully, Naomi had plenty of people on her side to provide motivation and guidance. She originally started off in the food service training program but was eager to enter the retail skills program, since she had previously worked at the Salvation Army and Subway. When Naomi mentioned her interest in retail, Duff recognized that her go-getting attitude would be a perfect match for the program.
The seven-week retail skills training is a systematic program combining classroom instructions with on-the-job experience at a Goodwill store. As Naomi progressed and graduated from the program, she became more confident in her abilities.
Duff said it was great to see how Naomi grew into the devoted, driven worker she is today. “She has this strong desire, this longing to succeed. And she knows that she’s able to do that, although she has fallen short in the past.”

After her father caught the coronavirus (新冠病毒), Sumoma Khnom managed to find a bed for him at Dhaka Medial College Hospital. The hospital was already crowded with too many patients. This was not her only problem. Her family did not have enough money to buy food. And she was extremely tired. But then, some comfort came.
Volunteers working for the Bidyanondo Foundation, social organization, brought her family a gift basket. It was filled with fruit —oranges, apples, and lemons —as well as other food. There was also a get-well card for her father. It read,"We are here to stand by you."
The Bidyanondo Foundation, established in 2013, is known for its food assistance (援助) programs for street children and the poor. Now it is also famed for building awareness (意识) of COVID-19 in the community. Its name, Bidyanondo, means"learn for fun".
Since June 1, the group has given out about 1.400 gift baskets In March. the Dhaka Tribune reported that the foundation was giving out protective things such as face masks (口罩) and hand cleaner. Yeasin said that the first responsibility of the foundation is to support patients and build awareness. However, it does not want doctors and other health workers to be forgotten "Many health workers are saying outside home, away from their families to provide health care,"he said"We wanted to thank them. They also need mental(精神上的) support.
So, the foundation has sent health care workers thank you cards. One reads, “We become brave to do more (for people) seeing your effort, we know you will continue [to] fight to save our lives if we become ill tomorrow. ” Many support Biyanondo’s efforts. Sumona Khanom said she was thankful that the foundation has come forward to help her father "I hope, "she said, "They would offer to help all other fathers."

6 . What better way to experience the history of a site than to have a hand in actually preserving it? This was the thought behind the founding of Adventures in Preservation(AIP) in 2001. The nonprofit's founders.Judith Broeker and Jamie Donahoe, were both long time preservationists and world travelers. They had seen a great many buildings in poor condition, as well as buildings that had been“restored" without the benefit of conservation expertise.
Twelve years on, they are still involved in the day-to-day management of the organization, supported by a volunteer staff located around the world, Judith' s favorite projects have long been the ones in Eastern Europe, and she enjoys opportunity to travel there each year. She, along with anyone else who's joined an adventure, always quotes their fellow jammers, as they' re called, as the highlight of each project. The groups are made up of people from all different ages, occupations, and cultures.Yet each time, they form a strong bond and work so well together that the work becomes fun. Which, after all, is the point of a working vacation, no?
Raising understanding of people's own heritage(遗迹) is another part of AIP projects. In many places, there is so much focus on the news that not only are heritage buildings being lost but so are the traditional building skills needed to keep them. By providing training and raising awareness of the importance of their heritage, AIP is helping keep both alive.
Next year, AIP has projects in Europe and the US. There will be even more projects the following year as projects currently under development in Ghana, Armenia, Ukraine and the US come on line. Each project is also an opportunity for travel, adventure, and personal growth, and AIP welcomes people from around the world to join a project and“"jam" with them.

9 . According to a survey, in Washington, DC, only 69 percent of public school students graduate from high school on time. Many factors influence that low rate. One of the most important ones is whether the people around the students expect them to succeed.
So, for the past 40 years, a DC organization has stepped in to give around 10, 000 students the support and positive environment they need to thrive. This organization, called Higher Achievement, provides students with a welcoming space, help with class work, and caring teachers. More than 95 percent of students who complete Higher Achievement graduate from high school on time.
Katherine Roboff is the group's executive director in the DC area. She gives several reasons for the group's success. One is timing. Higher Achievement does not work with students who are already in high school. It works with students in middle school. They start High Achievement at fifth or sixth grade-in the US, that is usually age 11 or 12.
Roboff says research shows that if students are doing well academically in eighth grade — around age 13-they will have a greater chance of graduating from high school and going to college. In other words, what happens in middle school has a huge effect. The years between ages 10 and 13 may affect a student's future more than anything that happens academically in high school.
Roboff explains that students participate in Higher Achievement after school and during the summer, when public schools take a break of about two months. High Achievement students do homework, have community meetings, and work one-on-one with a mentor.
The purpose of the program is to help them use those after school and summer hours to become better prepared academically and to develop their leadership skills and confidence so that by the time they get into eighth grade they are ready to get into some of the top high schools.

10 . “Elsa, it’s you!” It was a four-year-old’s surprise birthday party, and her favorite Disney character, Elsa from Frozen, had arrived. The two happily began to sing the movie’s big song, “Let It Go,” and were soon joined by Tinker Bell and four other fairy-tale princesses: Anna, Ariel, Jasmine, and Snow White. You would swear you were celebrating at the most magical place on earth.
But this wasn’t Disney World. It was the pediatric (儿科的) cancer ward at a hospital on Long Island in New York. And the princesses were college students who volunteer for A Moment of Magic, a nonprofit organization whose mission is to lift the spirits of sick children.
Kylee McGrane, now 23 and her friend Maggie McAndrew, then both students on service scholarships at the College of Mount Saint Vincent in New York City, were searching for a new community project, ideally one with kids. That sparked an idea—dressing up as Disney princesses and visiting pediatric cancer patients. “When kids are in a hospital for so long, they don’t get all the magic that most kids do,” says McGrane. “It’s nice to give them time to be themselves.”
In 2015, after raising to pay for costumes and travel expenses, McGrane and McAndrew landed their first gig, at Cohen Children’s Medical Center in New Hyde Park, New York. They dressed as Elsa and her sister, Anna, to the delight of the girls and smiles from the boys. They spent nearly three hours singing songs, taking pictures, and traveling from one bedside to the next until they had visited and chatted with every one of the 50 children. “To see the kids believe in me, my character … It was life-changing,” says McGrane.
Of course, a princess can work only so many miracles at once, so McGrane and McAndrew recruited their peers. Today, A Moment of Magic has 400 volunteers from 11 colleges around the country.
