1 . Do you want to live with a strong sense of peacefulness, happiness, goodness, and self- respect? The collection of happiness actions broadly categorized as "honor" help you create this life of good feelings.
Here's an example to show how honorable actions create happiness.
Say a store clerk fails to charge us for an item. If we keep silent, and profit from the clerk's mistake, we would drive home with a sense of sneaky excitement. Later we might tell our family or friends about our good fortune. On the other hand, if we tell the clerk about the uncharged item, the clerk would be grateful and thank us for our honesty. We would leave the store with a quiet sense of honor that we might never share with another soul.
Then, what is it to do with our sense of happiness?
In the first case, where we don't tell the clerk, a couple of things would happen. Deep down inside we would know ourselves as a type of thief. In the process, we would lose some peace of mind and self-respect. We would also demonstrate that we cannot lie trusted, since we advertise our dishonor by telling our family and friends. We damage our own reputations by telling others. In contrast, bringing the error to the clerk's attention causes different things to happen. Immediately the clerk knows us to be honorable. Upon leaving the store, we feel honorable and our self-respect is increased.   Whenever we take honorable action we gain the deep internal rewards of goodness and a sense of nobility.
There is a beautiful positive cycle that is created by living a life of honorable actions. Honorable thoughts lead to honorable actions. Honorable actions lead us to a happier existence. And it's easy to think and act honorably again when we're happy. While the positive cycle can be difficult to start, once it's started, it's easy to continue. Keeping on doing good deeds brings us peace of mind, which is important for our happiness.
1. According to the passage, the positive action in the example contributes to our
A.self-respectB.financial rewardsC.advertising abilityD.friendly relationship
2. The author thinks that keeping silent about the uncharged item is equal to___.
A.lyingB.stealingC.cheatingD.advertising
3. The phrase "bringing the error to the clerk's attention" (in para. 5) means___.
A.telling the truth to the clerkB.offering advice to the clerk
C.asking the clerk to be more attentiveD.reminding the clerk of the charged item
4. How will we feel if we let the clerk know her mistake?
A.We'll be very excited.B.We'll feel unfortunate.
C.We'll have a sense of honor.D.We'll feel sorry for the clerk.
5. Which of the following can be the best title of this passage.*
A.How to Live TruthfullyB.Importance of Peacefulness
C.Ways of Gaining Self-respectD.Happiness through Honorable Actions

2 . Too many people want others to be their friends, but they don’t give friendship back. That is why some friendships don’t last very long. To have a friend, you must learn to treat your friend the way you want your friend to treat you. Learning to be a good friend means learning three rules: be honest; be generous(宽宏大量的); be understanding.

Honesty is where a good friendship starts. Friends must be able to trust one another. If you do not tell the truth, people usually find out. If a friend finds out that you haven’t been honest, you may lose your friend’s trust. Good friends always rely on one another to speak and act honestly.

Generosity means sharing and sharing makes a friendship grow. You do not have to give your lunch money or your clothes. Naturally you will want to share your ideas and feelings. These can be very valuable to a friend. They tell your friend what is important to you. By sharing them, you help your friend know better.

Sooner or later everyone needs understanding and help with a problem. Something may go wrong at school. Talking about the problem can make it easier to solve. Turning to a friend can be a first step in solving the problem. So to be a friend you must listen and understand. You must try to put yourself in your friend’s place so that you can understand the problem better.

No two friendships are exactly alike(相同的).But all true friendships have three things in common. If you plan to keep your friends, you must practice honesty, generosity and understanding.

3 . London Underground

The world's first subway was built in London in 1863. At the time, the government was looking for a way to reduce traffic problems in the city of London. The poor areas of the city were so crowded with people that it was almost impossible for horse carriages to get through. The city officials were interested in trying to make it possible for workers to live outside of London and travel easily to work each day. If people had a cheap and convenient way that they could depend on to go to and from work, they would relocate their homes outside of the city. This would help ease(减轻) the pressure of too many people living in the poor parts of London. From these problems, the idea of the London Underground, the first subway system, was born.

The plans for building the Underground met with several problems and delays, but the fast track was finally opened in January 1863. A steam train pulled the cars along the fast underground track which was 6 kilometers (3.7 miles) long. About 30,000 people got on the subway the first day. Riders were treated to comfortable seats (standing up while the train was moving was not allowed), and pleasant decorations inside each of the cars. However, the smoke from the engine soon filled the air in the tunnels with ash and soot(煤灰), as well as chemical gases. Fans had to be put in the tunnels later to keep the air clean enough for people to breathe. Even with its problems, riding in the Underground did catch on. It carried 9 million riders in its first year.

1. What led the British government to build the London Underground?
A.Traffic jams and pollution.
B.Population and pollution.
C.Overcrowding and traffic jams.
D.The poverty and subway problems.
2. How did the London Underground solve the smoke problem?
A.It made the tunnels larger.
B.It put fans in the tunnels.
C.It cleaned the chemical gases in the tunnels.
D.It reduced the number of passengers riding in the train.
3. The underlined phrase “catch on” most probably means “________”.
A.be troublesome
B.become popular and fashionable
C.keep up with
D.seize
4. Which of the following is TRUE?
A.To relocate the workers’ homes outside London, the government built the subway.
B.There were so many problems and delays that in 18th century the first subway opened.
C.The subway greatly eased the pressure of traffic.
D.There were not enough seats for the passengers the first day the subway opened.
4 . The Internet of Things (IoT) aims to get everything and everyone talking. Attaching sensors to “things”, such as cows, cars and refrigerator, and then assigning them unique IP addresses allow them to “talk” to the Internet. Of course, the IoT will involve much more than a handful of sensors. Networking company Cisco estimates that 50 billion Internet-connected devices and objects will
be sending over data by 2020.
Specific Benefits
The IoT will allow people to track things and processes like never before. Airplane manufacturers will be able to continuously track the condition of airplane parts, allowing them to do preventive maintenance and avoid costly downtime. Consumers could install smart meters in their homes to monitor energy usage and observe energy price changes in real time. That would allow people to adjust their habits and use electrical appliances during lower-priced hours.
Some Fears
Some critics fear that the IoT could end up being a fashion that people lose interest in over time. Having Twitter feeds on refrigerator doors may sound cool at first, but the attraction could fade as quickly as the excitement over last year’s smartphone! Other critics are doubtful that companies making Internet-connected appliances will provide long-term software updates. If that happens, a refrigerator or washing machine that should last 10 years or more could last two or three due to software that’s outdated.
A Positive Example
Early this year, owners of the Tesla Model S electric car received a recall notice alerting them to a charger plug needing to be fixed. Amazingly, owners of the Model S sat back while the company performed an “over the air” wireless update. Customers confirmed the update by tapping on the car’s touchscreen console to see that the Model S was running the latest software version. No trip to the dealer was required!
Perhaps Tesla’s remote fix is a sign of things to come. Someday soon, people’s lives might become a lot more efficient and convenient thanks to the IoT.

1. How do researchers get everything and everyone talking?
A.By establishing the IoT and launching a handful of sensors.
B.By connecting sensors with them and appointing them unique IP addresses.
C.By communicating with them all the time through the IoT.
D.By sending people to track them day and night and collect useful data.
2. According to the article, which of the following is NOT TRUE?
A.IoT can help people do preventive maintenance and save money.
B.IoT can help people monitor energy usage and observe price changes timely.
C.IoT can help people adjust their habits and use electrical appliances more smartly.
D.IoT can help people investigate things and update a lot of important data.
3. What else do critics worry about the IoT besides its probably ending up being a fashion?
A.People will lose interest in it as quickly as the thrill over last year’s smartphone.
B.Refrigerators and washing machines will be replaced by other devices in a few years.
C.Whether related companies will provide long-term software updates or not.
D.The software provided by companies will be outdated easily and quickly.
4. According to the passage, when owners of the Tesla Model S electric received a recall notice, they ______.
A.just waited in the car while the maintenance is being done through wireless update
B.were required to go to the nearest 4s store to make some adjustments or repairs
C.could definitely depend on the IoT to send them the charger plug to be fixed
D.had to confirm the update with the help of the equipment provided by the company

6 . Did anyone find the names of “Great Britain”, “the United Kingdom”, “England” and “the British commonwealth” which have the same meaning? Strictly speaking, these names all refer to something different. None of them are exactly the same as any of the others.
The British isles refer to the main islands and several thousand small ones as well, which you can see on the map. Great Britain, or Britain, refers to the larger of the two main islands. But the word “Britain” is often used as a short form for the United Kingdom or you call it the UK .
Now as for England, it refers simply to the largest of the three countries on the island of Great Britain. The United Kingdom is the name of the state and the official name of the country, which many people popularly refer to England.

8 . Sports are all about change. A team gets better. A kid practices more and swims a personal best or learns a new move on the basketball court. In 2006, two things happened that got me thinking about change—in sports and in life.
One of them is tennis champion Andre Agassi, who retired in 2006. Agassi was a terrific player who won 60 titles, including eight major championships(冠军称号). But his greatest accomplishment(成就)might have been how much he changed during his career.
When he was young, Agassi was a show off who seemed to care only about himself. He didn't train very hard, but he won matches because of his tremendous(极大的)talent.Eventually, though, injuries and his bad attitude caught up with him. He fell from No.1 in the world ranking to No.141.
So Agassi changed. He trained harder and became a world-class player again. More importantly, he changed as a person. He was nicer to fans and opponents(对手). He stopped thinking just about himself and started thinking about others. Through his Andre Agassi Charitable Foundation, he raised more than $60 million to help disadvantaged kids around his hometown of Las Vegas, Nevada. He even started a school, the Andre Agassi College Preparatory Academy, for at-risk kids.
At the start of a new year, lots of people promise themselves they will change. They might vow to get in good physical shape, do better in school or be nicer to others. Changes such as those can be difficult. But they do happen. Just remember Andre Agassi: It wasn't easy, but he changed, and changed for the better.
1. According to the writer, which of the following may be the greatest achievement for Agassi?
A.He once ranked No.1 in the world rankings.
B.He won 60 titles.
C.He changed much during his career.
D.He won 8 major championships.
2. What does the underlined work “vow” in the 6th paragraph probably mean?
A.promise.B.agree.C.wish.D.prove.
3. What do you know about Andre Agassi Charitable Foundation?
A.It is intended to help at-risk kids.
B.It is a charity school set up by Agassi.
C.Some disadvantaged kids can get help from it.
D.Agassi runs it with his prize money.
4. What might be talked about in the paragraphs following this passage?
A.What achievements Agassi has made after he changed for the better.
B.How we can change for the better.
C.Another thing happened in life that got the writer thinking about change.
D.Some assessments(评价) about Agassi from different people.
