1 . 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

I sat in my parents’ car. Mom had insisted I go with her to pick up Dad from work. Across from Dad’s office is a bike store. That was the day my eleven-year-old eyes first saw the purple BMX Mongoose bike. From that day on, all I could think about was that bike. I even drew pictures of the bike in class. Every evening afterward, at five thirty, I eagerly went along with Mom to get Dad.

And every day I told my parents, “I want that bike!” But they disagreed and replied that I had already had a perfectly good bike at home. I’d argue it was old and ugly, thinking that my happiness depended on that purple bike. Days later, I found the store had sold that bike. I knew I’d never be happy again.

A week later, returning home from school, I tripped over something. Lying in the weeds near a river and some wooded lots, was a bike — the exact bike from the store. “Hey, whose bike is this?” I shouted, scanning the area. No one replied, and there was no one in sight. Maybe its owner didn’t want it any longer. I couldn’t leave it lying in the weeds. So I took it home and hid it behind the garage. Every day after school, I sat there, admiring it. But I didn’t feel like riding and didn’t feel as happy as I had thought. Thinking about the bike made my stomach tighten and uncomfortable.

A few days later, during lunch at school, my friend said, “Did you hear about Tyler, in the other fifth-grade class? He lost his new purple BMX Mongoose bike he had just gotten for his birthday. He left it by a river while playing in the woods. It got dark, and he couldn’t find it.”

“I’d never go off and leave a new bike like that. He doesn’t deserve to have that bike,” I replied. My friend added, “Kids say he’s nice. And they say Tyler is upset because his dad worked overtime to buy the bike for him.” For the rest of the day, I couldn’t stop thinking about Tyler.

2 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。续写的词数应为150左右。

I was never a fast runner and thus I always didn’t like running. Throughout my childhood, whenever we competed in the 50-meter run, the 400-meter, or any other type of race, I would finish in the bottom half. In my late teens, as a member of a baseball team, I was the slowest runner on the team. In the preseason training, I was always the one running by myself at the end.

Therefore, twenty years later, when I entered my first official running race — a 3,000-meter challenge in my city — at age 38, I certainly didn’t expect to win or come close to winning.

I was there because my college friend Jim Hosek was the director of the race, and he asked me to run. The race was aimed at raising money for the unfortunate patients in a hospital and encouraging the patients and their fanilies to be brave, determined, and confident with sportsmanship.

It was a heartwarming program.I wanted to support it, so I showed up, paid the entrance fee, had a number pinned (把……别住) on my back, and moved over to the starting line. There, I waited with about 300 other runners for the race to begin. I was nervous. Would I be the last one to finish a race again? Could I even finish the race? I wondered.

Before long, someone spoke into a microphole, “Anyone weighing over 200 pounds comes down to the scale (秤), please.” Knowing I was over 200 pounds, I walked down to the scale. A man told me to stand on it. “Two hundred and three pounds,” he said. Then he wrote down the race number that was on my back. Out of curiosity, I asked him why he did so,and then I was told there would be an award ceremony (仪式) after the race. One award was for the first finisher in the over 200-pound group, and this special award would be announced at the end of the ceremony.

Not expecting the award, I ran towards the starting line, never realizing there were only two runners weighing over 200 pounds.

Paragraph 1:
             Soon after, the race started.

Paragraph 2:
Then came the last award, and to my surprise, my name was announced.

3 . 阅读下面的短文,根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要。

Babe Didrikson Zaharias was one of the most extraordinary athletes of all time. She achieved particular success in basketball, track and field, and golf. She also competed in baseball, boxing, diving and many other sports. In 1950, the Associated Press declared Babe Zaharias to be the “Woman Athlete of the Half-Century”.

From a young age, her goal was to be “the greatest athlete to ever live”. As a teenager, she acquired the nickname “Babe” in reference to Babe Ruth, a professional baseball player. She never passed up a chance to play ball. One day, when she was a little girl, her mother sent her to the grocery store to buy some beef for dinner. On the way home, Babe spotted some boys playing baseball. She dropped her purchases and joined the game. An hour later, her angry mother showed up, looking for the groceries. Babe pointed to where she’d left it. A dog was happily enjoying the last piece.

Zaharias gained fame at the 1932 Olympic Games. She won gold medals in the javelin (标枪) throw and the 80-metre hurdles (跨栏), but she was deprived of a third gold medal in the high jump because she had used the unorthodox (不正规的) Western roll to achieve the highest jump. Her Olympic success brought her national attention.

In 1932, Zaharias began playing golf and was soon winning important championships in the sport. In 1950, Zaharias helped found the Ladies Professional Golf Association, and she became the LPGA’s star competitor. Not only did she attract interest in the women’s game, she revolutionized the sport and was known for her powerful drives.

Zaharias died of cancer in 1956, at the age of 45.

As the first rays of the morning sun shone through the clouds, “Not again!” Julia sighed as she tried to reach her bedside clock. It rang repeatedly, reminding her she’d be late if she didn’t get up!

Julia threw away her blanket and sat on her bed, stretching herself. It was going to be another busy day. Julia worked as a nurse at the city hospital, often taking multiple shifts and working long hours to ensure her daughter never missed out on anything. Things had been hard for them after Julia’s husband died, and being a single parent wasn’t an easy thing.

“Get up, honey! You’re going to be late for school!” Julia opened the window in Ashley’s room and kissed her cheeks. “Wake up, princess!”

Later, Julia fed Ashley and dropped her off at the bus stop. “Be a good girl and have fun!” she told Ashley as she waved her goodbye. Watching the school bus disappear down the street, Julia returned home, took a quick shower and drove off to work, eating a breakfast bar in the car.

As she arrived at the hospital, Julia realized getting home in time to prepare lunch would be impossible because she had a long list of patients to attend to. Yet again, Julia was busy with work, which meant missing out on the time she spent with Ashley. But Julia didn’t have a choice. She was doing it all for Ashley and herself.

Sitting at her desk, Julia dialed her new neighbour, Marco, who’d always come through for her whenever she needed help, asking him if he could look after Ashley.

“No problem, I love hanging out with Ashley, and she’s a lot of joy to be around.”

“I’m sure she feels the same way about you,” Julia laughed. “Look, I’m sorry again for troubling you and thanks.”

Julia was on her way home after work when she was unexpectedly called back. It was an emergency case, and there was a shortage of nurses. Julia called Marco and informed him she’d be home later than usual, and he said it was fine.

I must admit, I haven’t always liked animals. In fact, I distrusted them greatly while growing up, and I still fear the ones I don’t know personally. What set my beliefs in stone was being attacked—not once but many times, including the summer after second grade when I was bitten by a rabbit. Then, when I was nine and riding my dirt bike down the road, a large dog charged me and tried to bite my ankle. After all those negative experiences, there was one thing I knew for sure: All creatures, great and small, were no friends of mine.

After college in California, I returned to live the single life in Las Vega. Then I met Lisa. In no time at all, we fell in love, married and moved into a new house. Despite my avoidance of animals, Lisa had a dog called Bailey. Bailey didn’t like me, but he tolerated my existence once he realized I wasn’t going anywhere.

Things changed as spring came. We welcomed a new member of our family: our son Evan. One evening Evan grabbed hold of the dog’s tail. The irritated dog paused and turned to look at his stuck tail but waited patiently until being released. Still the stories I’d heard of animals attacking babies worries me.

Then my worst fear occurred. I sat on the couch (沙发) reading after a long day while my wife worked at the dining-room table paying the bills. I saw Evan crawl across the family-room carpet as he made his way behind the couch. One minute, all was quiet and then Bailey entered the room and headed to where Evan had crawled. I nearly jumped out of my skin when I heard the dog start a fearful barking behind me.

Surviving Mount Rainier

Bad luck and poor timing left Kart and three climbers stuck on Mount Rainier for several long days. They faced mountain climbing’s toughest tests. One man suffered altitude sickness; ice and rockfall rained down at night; cold nights in a tent that got torn left them hypothermic(体温过低的). Calm confidence, skill and the courage to continue up the route, despite illness and injury, likely saved their lives.

The climbers set out on a Friday, camping low on the route the first night because they were concerned about rockfall after a climber had recently died in an accident at the route’s typical high camp. On Saturday, at about 10,500 feet, one of the climbers became sick from the altitude, which began to slow them down. They needed to keep moving, so they put him in the lead so he could move at a pace he was comfortable with.

By Sunday evening, the ill climber was exhausted, and they had to make an unplanned camp on steep snow. They were in a bad place—on a platform about the size of a table under an ice cliff. The wind got stronger during the night, ripping the tent and snapping the poles. They tried to secure it by placing their packs and rocks around the edges. Finally, they just stuck their feet between the rocks and held the tent with their bodies. It was a cold night.

7 . 阅读下列短文,并根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Poor little Maggie was left alone after her mother died. What’s worse, no one would like to take her home. Two years before, a fall from a window had injured her spine, and she had not been able to leave her bed since.

“Take her to the orphanage(孤儿院),” said a neighbour. Joe Thompson, farmer who happened to pass by, paused and said to him, “It’s a cruel thing to send her there.” “Oh, Sir,” Maggie cried out, “don’t leave me here all alone!”

Though not good-looking in appearance. Joe Thompson had a soft heart. He liked children. “No, dear,” he answered, “you shall not be left alone.” Lifting her in his strong arms, he took her across the field to his home.

“Who is she?” sharply questioned Mrs. Thompson upon his return home. “Wait a moment for explanations, and be gentle,” Joe said equally sharply back. He carried Maggie to a small room on the first floor, and laid her on a bed. Then, stepping back, he shut the door, and stood face to face with his angry wife.

“I can’t believe it that you’ve brought home a sick child!” Her face was in a flame. “I think women’s hearts are sometimes very hard,” said Joe. His sudden outbreak had impressed his wife and he added quickly, “This poor motherless little one needs a family. Let’s keep her here.”

The voice of the strong, rough man shook, and he turned his head away, so that the tears in his eyes could not be seen. Mrs. Thompson did not answer, but a soft feeling crept into her heart. “Look at her kindly, Jane, and speak to her kindly,” said Joe, “Think of her dead mother, and the loneliness, the pain, the sorrow that must be on all her coming life.” Mrs. Thompson did not reply, but turned towards the little room where her husband had put Maggie: and, pushing open the door, went quietly in. Joe did not follow; he felt that it would be best to leave her alone with the child.

8 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

At 16, I got what every teenager dreams of — a driver’s license, but I was afraid of driving on the road. “Do you want to drive home, Alice?” Mom asked when she picked me up from school.

I hesitated, saying, “Really? Are you sure?”

“Okay,” I jumped in the driver’s seat as soon as Mom said yes.

When we reached the country road, I stopped. “Now, look both ways,” Mom instructed. “Turn your steering wheel (方向盘) to the left. Give it some gas, but take it slowly. We’re not in any hurry.”

I pulled onto the narrow road. We kept moving and everything was fine until a truck came up. I looked in the mirror. I guessed it didn’t occur to the man to slow down as his truck approached our car. When I failed to speed up, he honked (鸣喇叭). My hands held the steering wheel tightly.

“You’d better turn and let this guy pass,” Mom said.

The guy honked again before I got to where I needed to turn. Mom shouted, “Turn, turn here!”

I felt like I couldn’t make the turn, but I did what I was told. I turned the wheel and our car fell into the ditch (沟渠) alongside the road. My foot hit the gas pedal, and the engine roared like an angry lion. Our car flew across the ditch.

Mom cried, “Hit the brake (刹车)!” The car landed heavily.

My hands dropped from the steering wheel. For a moment, we sat silently. I took several deep breaths, afraid to look at my mom. Finally, she asked, “Are you OK?” “Yeah,” I replied and turned to see an injury to her face. I thought I was going to be blamed, but when our eyes met, she burst into wild laughter. We climbed from the car and leaned against it to steady ourselves.

9 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

It was last August. We were on vacation, just me, my husband, and our two kids, out for a nice, safe, socially distanced week away. We went to a popular place called Diana's Baths, where the water falls off a series of flat rocks up the mountain. The baths were full of families, so we made our way to one of the upper levels of rock to keep our distance.

Both where we sat and down below, the water fell down and into small pools, where kids in swimsuits were playing water around. I was frightened as I saw my two boys jump between the smooth rocks. I told them to stay away from all those edges. But I soon relaxed, and we were all having fun, laughing in the pools.

Suddenly, I turned and saw my son Wyatt sitting down between two rocks in fast-moving water. I shouted at him to get out. He called back something that I couldn't hear, and then he disappeared over the edge. All I remember from the moments after was screaming, over and over, like a prayer, “Somebody help my son!” I didn't even know what help he needed, because I couldn't force myself to look.

My husband was already jumping down the rocks. I finally looked. Wyatt was sitting up-he was alive. My biggest fear was gone. As I held my younger son, Jed, close, I heard another woman scream. “That child just went over the waterfall!” she shouted at her husband. “We are leaving!” They walked away, never even looking back to see whether our child was OK.

It was about 4 meters from the top of the waterfall to the pool below, which was filled with huge rocks. Wyatt had fallen on his back, straight onto the rocks. That's what Lisa told us. We didn't know her name was Lisa at that point. All we knew was that while everyone else looked on from a distance, too afraid or unbothered to help, Lisa didn't hesitate.

By morning, Afiq knew what he had to do. He had not slept a wink but had sat in the balcony all night thinking. He stretched his body and went back to his room. His brother Affin was still asleep.

It was Saturday and there was no school. Afiq's mother asked him to buy some groceries for her. On his way out, he glanced at his motorcycle with the broken front lamp and scratches on the side. Afiq straightened his shoulders and went to complete his purchase.

It was late morning when Afiq was free to carry out his plan. He marched down the road to Osman's house. When he arrived, Aniya appeared at the doorway and greeted him warmly. She invited him in and served him tea and some cakes. Afiq nervously asked to speak to Osman. She told him that her father was out but would be home very soon. Sure enough, the elderly man returned in ten minutes.

Afiq cleared his throat a few times and said that he had come to confess (坦白). “I'm so sorry. I was careless yesterday and knocked into your parked car,” Afiq said. Osman looked at the 17-year-old youth, surprised, “So, you are saying that you are the culprit (肇事者) who crashed into my car and then ran away?” Afiq went red. He nodded, “I'm sorry for not telling you earlier. I was too frightened.”

The elderly man smiled and said, “But you're not too frightened to confess now?”

Afiq said uncertainly, “I could not sleep last night thinking about it. I knew I had to do the right thing.”

Osman was silent for a minute before saying in a kind voice, “Do you think it a right thing to cover up for your brother?”
