文章大意:这是一篇议论文。本篇文章就“为什么人们爱翘二郎腿”、“翘二郎腿有什么危害”以及“培养健康坐姿习惯”等展开讨论。

1 . The topic of “crossing your legs” has been hotly discussed on the Internet recently. The truth is that crossing one leg over the other, a common sitting posture preferred by many people, may actually do harm to one’s health. So while seated, try not to do so any more.

Whether it is at the office, in a waiting room or relaxing at home, many people’ s go-to posture is one leg over the other, crossed at the knee. If you’re like many of us, you spend too many hours of your day seated and for most of that time, you have crossed your legs for comfort.

One study found that people who sat with their legs crossed for more than three hours a day were more likely to lean forward and to round their shoulders. But the research relied on people’s own estimations of how long they crossed their legs for.

When you cross your legs, you are putting compression and pressure on your leg and knee joints and nerves. The way you sit is a huge determinant of your health and the way your body moves and functions. Sitting with your legs crossed leaves your hips uneven and forces your pelvic bone (盆骨) to rotate. Therefore, the longer you sit in this uneven position, the more pressure is placed on your knee and spine (脊柱), increasing the likelihood that it will develop into a long-term issue.

If seated long, then more importantly for you, cultivate and develop a healthy habit of sitting position. And here are the followings. Switch sitting positions often. Take brief walks around your office or home. Gently stretch your muscles every so often to help relieve muscle tension. Keep your feet on the floor, with your ankles in front of your knees. Relax your shoulders; they should not be rounded. Keep your elbows in close to your body and let them be bent between 90 and 120 degrees. Make sure that your back, thighs and hips are fully supported. Try doing those and maybe some of them fit you.

1. Why do many people like to be seated “crossing their legs”?
A.They do so just for sort of ease.
B.They want their legs to take up more space.
C.They think it’s a power move.
D.It is a common sitting posture preferred by the most.
2. Which of the following may not be the “harm” that the long “cross-legged” position leads to?
A.Your hips are in an unbalanced position.
B.Your spine supports more pressure.
C.Your pelvic bone is forced to rotate.
D.You may lean forward.
3. How many proposals does the author speak about to those seated long in the text?
A.9.B.7.C.5.D.3.
4. What might the author mainly want to tell us?
A.What a common sitting posture is.
B.The cross-legged position is popular.
C.Don’t cross your legs any longer.
D.Being seated long is unhealthy.

文章大意:本文是一篇议论文。文章通过对比和引用肯德基创始人Sanders的故事阐明一个观点——真正的经济安全和自由不在于我们的工作,而在于我们的激情。

2 . Real financial security and freedom is not in our job but in our passion. It’s easy to define and evaluate a man by his pursuit. Joseph Campbell once said, “Follow your dream and the universe will open doors where there are only walls.”

In life, we’ll always be found doing any of these two things: either making a living or making a difference. Pensions (养老金) and salaries stop many from pursuing excellence while passion unlocks hidden potentials that equip us for challenges and opportunities. A job helps us make a living while passion enables us to make a difference.

I want to sincerely help to adjust and clarify the misguided belief among workers that a job is a means of livelihood. Rather, it should be a means to fuel our passion. The earlier you realize this basic truth of life, the more clearly you’ll be able to position yourself in living a life of impact and value.

The success of Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) shows how meaningful it is to pursue your passion instead of your pension. Its founder, Colonel Harland Sanders, didn’t realize this until he was given his first social security check of 105 dollars. But he decided that there surely was something to do for himself and other people instead of living on that small pension. He was determined to engage himself in what brought him impact and value. Drawing inspiration from his mother’s special recipe for fried chicken, he invented “finger-licking” seasoning with eleven spices and herbs. Despite much rejection, he managed to round up some investors and promote company’s rapid expansion to more than 6,000 locations. Sanders’ life pointed towards two facts about making a difference: one, there is no age that is too old to make a difference; two, there is nothing too small or insignificant to make a difference with, as long as it is your passion.

1. How does the author support his argument in Paragraph 2?
A.By listing examples.
B.By including a quote.
C.By showing contrast.
D.By sharing his experience.
2. How did Sanders probably feel when offered his first social security check?
A.Deeply moved.B.Internally motivated.
C.Greatly relieved.D.Pleasantly surprised.
3. What does the author intend to do?
A.Give career guidance.
B.Advise us to pursue our passion.
C.Persuade us to get a well-paid job.
D.Secure our position.
4. What is the best title for this text?
A.Following Your DreamsB.Working for Pension
C.To Work or Not to Work?D.Passion or Pension?

文章大意:这是一篇议论文。文章主要论述了我们的人生不应该遵循固定的模式,我们应该倾听自己内心的声音,坚持我们自己内心的想法,走我们自己的人生道路。

3 . Many of us seem to have lives that follow a certain path. From kindergarten all the way to marriage, every stage of our lives seems to be preset. Although this works well for many people, according to British motivational philosopher Jay Shetty, there is no “right” schedule to live our lives by.

A few months ago, a video of Shetty’s speech Before You Feel Pressure went viral on the Internet across the world. In the video, he sends an important message that we should think “outside of the path” and have the courage to follow our hearts. Shetty adds that, we don’t have to get stressed and put ourselves in a race with our peers or judge our lives based on others. Everything in life happens according to our time, our clocks.

In his inspiring speech, Shetty points out that UK author J. K. Rowling got her famous Harry Potter series published at age 32, after being turned down by 12 publishers. Shetty also mentions that Chinese businessman Jack Ma didn’t even start the Alibaba Group until he was 35 and US actor Morgan Freeman didn’t get his big break until he was 52 years old.

We shouldn’t let anyone rush us. As Albert Einstein once said, “Not everything that counts can be counted, and not everything that’s counted truly counts. ”

The key to staying on our own tracks is to be patient and embrace our own passions. In Australian nurse Bronnie Ware’s best-selling book, she recorded the regrets of her dying patients, and the top one on the list was, “I wish l had the courage to live a life true to myself, not the one others expected of me.” Indeed, we are all unique in our personalities and gifts, and there’s no perfect fit for all. We should listen to our inner voices and unlearn what the world has taught us.

“It is important to allow people to go back to being self-aware of their own interests, needs and concerns”, Shetty told National Geographic. “It’s disconnecting from what ‘makes sense’ to what actually moves you and what makes sense internally.”

1. What is many people’s life path like according to Paragraph 1?
A.It suits everyone fine.
B.It is preset by parents.
C.It includes two major stages.
D.It seems to be a fixed pattern.
2. What does Shetty want to convey in the video?
A.Run your own race.
B.Follow the preset path.
C.Think outside the box.
D.Integrate our ideas with others’.
3. How does Shetty prove his idea in Paragraph 3?
A.By using quotes.
B.By giving examples.
C.By making comparison.
D.By analyzing figures.
4. Which statement does the author most probably agree with?
A.Accept what others teach us.
B.Stick to our own internal thoughts.
C.Live up to others’ expectations of us.
D.Reflect on what we undergo in our life.

文章大意:本文是一篇议论文。先天和后天这两个术语自16世纪以来一直是比较的主题。文章论述了究竟是先天还是后天造就了我们。

4 . The two terms nature and nurture have been subjects of comparison since the 16th century. The argument is centered on the question as to whether it is nature or nurture that makes us who we are.

Nature provides the starting point for an organism that will interact with nurture, the environment, during the organism’s life. Nature does not just affect an organism during its lifetime, but it also can directly affect the expression of genes in offspring (后代). For the Geneticists, they believe that our lives are entirely determined by genetics, which is nature. An opposing view is that there is no indication that genes (基因) determines one’s personality, rather there is growing evidence that nurture serves as the determining factor in personality development.

Nurture refers to the conditions under which living things grow and develop after birth. When applied to human beings, it means how the person is raised, which includes nutrition, education, care, as well as the kind of surroundings, such as cultural influence, family and friends.

The argument of nature and nurture as to which is more important is necessitated by an attempt to differentiate how much effect genetics has on a person’s development against how easily humans are influenced by one’s environment.

While nurture undeniably plays its part on the growth and development of one’s personality, nature dramatically outweighs nurture, for nature can be likened to a foundation. The impact of nurture on the development of persons cannot be totally denied. However, nature is regarded as being of most importance because of the fact that it affords an opportunity and creates a foundation and the basis for the question of nurture to arise at the very first instance. Even without nurture, the nature impact can still stand independently without necessarily causing destruction. More so, even when the nurture impact is successfully effected, it does not remove the genetic characteristics of a person. It therefore stands correctly that nature is that which determines the substance of a person.

1. What can we learn from Paragraph 2?
A.Nature’s role is supported by additional evidence.
B.Personality development is determined by nurture.
C.Nature impacts gene expression in later generation.
D.Environment shapes personality more than genetics.
2. What does Paragraph 3 mainly talk about?
A.What nurture means to human beings.
B.How living things develop after birth.
C.How nurture shapes human development.
D.How surroundings influence human beings.
3. How does the author stress the greater importance of nature?
A.By giving examples.
B.By making contrast.
C.By conducting experiments.
D.By citing research data.
4. What is the best title for the text?
A.A Long Story of Nature and Nurture
B.A New Research on Nature and Nurture
C.Who Can Tell What Makes Who We Are?
D.Which Is More Important, Nature or Nurture?

文章大意:本文是一篇议论文。文章论述了作者对广告的矛盾态度——作者很欣赏他们这些广告商为增加销售额所做的努力;然而,作为一个消费者,作者的真正愿望是尽可能减少他接触到的不相关的广告。

5 . For the past five years, I have worked in strategic roles in advertising. During my work, I challenged the difficulties in creating an ad that would be relevant to the brand, match its core values, and would also target appropriately consumers with a strong consumer insight. When I contribute to a successful campaign that matches all of the above, what I get is sheer bliss. In this sense, I love advertising.

Nevertheless, I am aware advertising has its gray areas. In many cases, advertisers focus on few features that can distinguish them from the competition, while presenting an incomplete picture of the product. For example, a snack brand can focus on the taste claim and ignore any clear reference to nutritional values and calories of the product. In other cases, advertisers claim superiority by using survey findings that do not agree with consumers’ common sense. Recently, a new Cola was introduced by a major Israeli company, claiming its Cola tastes better than the traditional Coca-Cola. Although such claim is possible, it is highly unlikely that a private-label Cola will be able to better suit the Israeli taste, since Coca-Cola dominates the Israeli Cola market for decades with over 90% market share. Yet, as a marketer, I understand we must be aggressive to put our products in consumers’ consideration set.

From a consumer’s standpoint, however, I have a contradictory attitude towards ads. I have some strong relationships with brands I encounter on a regular basis. I adore the design and innovation of Nespresso. I already replaced 4 iPhone models during the last decade and never bought a basketball shoe which is not a Nike shoe. When these brands advertise, I am open to hear about new products and watch ads. Consequently, I am willing to pay more or purchase more expensive products.

Meanwhile, getting used to certain brands makes me less willing to try new ones. When I experience a brand that does not meet my expectations as my usual choices do, I feel like I made a wrong decision. Moreover, the bad experience increases my skepticism towards new brands.

Overall, I admire the efforts made by us advertisers to increase sales. However, my true desire as a consumer is to minimize my exposure to irrelevant ads as much as possible.

1. What does the underlined expression “sheer bliss” in Paragraph 1 mean?
A.Pure happiness.B.Deep worry.C.A heavy burden.D.A great chance.
2. The “grey areas” of ads result from the fact that ________.
A.most products only have a few features
B.the legal boundaries of ads are undefined
C.the truth of the products is partially presented
D.most ads confuse their products with their rivals’
3. What can we learn from Paragraph 3?
A.The author was inspired by the design of Nespresso.
B.The author has never been bothered by high price.
C.The author is loyal to certain brands.
D.The author likes watching ads.
4. What is the best title for the text?
A.Why Ads Are MisleadingB.Why I Love and Hate Ads
C.What Made Ads So AnnoyingD.What Made a Household Brand

文章大意:这是一篇议论文。文章主要论述了一个新颖的观点:“懒惰”往往能驱动我们进行创新。

6 . In 1910, the Los Angeles Times ran a story about a boy who was charged with opening a valve (阀门) on a water pump powered by a steam engine to release the built-up pressure. His whole job consisted of staring at these machines all day, which was incredibly boring. The “ lazy ” boy then invented a release for the pump to run just as it should and won his freedom. The first automatic steam engine was born.

This story may be fictional, but the boy’s behavior reflects a deeper truth. When we are feeling lazy, we often search for an easier way, trying to update the process and save time and effort. In other words, laziness can drive innovation.

In recent years, some psychologists and business leaders have wised up to this insight, changing our perspective of what laziness really means. Both Bill Gates and Walter Chrysler have been credited with a quote: “ I always choose a lazy person to do a hard job because a lazy person will find an easy way to do it. ”

Our brains are born for laziness. Compared with our ancestors who had to conserve energy to compete for food, flee from predators, and fight, we now don’t take survival as a daily issue. It seems natural that we would choose to be “lazier” , but the opposite has occurred. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Americans sleep less and work more than we used to; productivity per worker has gone up 400 percent since 1950. Our culture teaches us that our worth depends on how industrious we are, so we work even harder to produce even more.

But there’s one big paradox (悖论), sad but true: The harder we work, the less productive we are. When demand increases, we tend to push harder. Yet the trouble is that, without any refresh and recharge, we are less efficient, make more mistakes, and get less engaged with what we’re doing.

Therefore, how can we make our labor more meaningful and our lives more fulfilling? Current research in psychology and neuroscience points to a new understanding of the value of the wandering mind. Taking breaks and allowing your thoughts to drift can help your brain retain information, refocus, and gain fresh perspective.

Here’s the core problem: When the time finally comes to put our feet up, we often don’t know how. We have little training in how to be idle. But at least give it a shot. Maybe this week, notice some downtime in your day, some white space in your calendar. Instead of filling the space with more work, just sit in the sofa, and be, in the words of poet Mary Oliver, “ idle and blessed. ”

1. The author tells the story in paragraph 1 to prove ______.
A.the kid needs punishingB.boredom enhances productivity
C.creativity contributes to lazinessD.laziness inspires new ideas
2. How did the author support his opinion in the third paragraph?
A.By listing some numbers of being lazy.
B.By quoting some great figures’ words.
C.By making a comparison between two great figures.
D.By giving examples of how to be creative.
3. What can we infer from paragraph 4?
A.People nowadays don’t have to face poverty.B.Modern society honors creativity.
C.Americans lives a poorer life than before.D.Ancestors consider industry as a value.
4. Which of the following idea will the author probably agree with?
A.Working 24 -7 with a tight schedule.
B.Taking three part-time jobs to fill weekends.
C.Watching a stand-up comedy after a busy weekday.
D.Attending a formal dinner with business purpose.
5. The author writes this passage to ______.
A.compare the previous understanding of idleness to the new
B.persuade people to give up the value of hard work
C.criticize the irresponsible attitude towards life
D.encourage people to keep refreshed for better work and life

7 . Feeling hungry? If so, what’s the easiest way to satisfy your hunger? Many of us will reach for a takeaway menu and order some delicious but possibly unhealthy food. And our increasingly busy and hectic lives, or some other reasons that we lack the skills to prepare a meal for ourselves might add to our need to buy ready-made food on the go or delivered to home.

Eating options (the freedom to choose) are endless, and new technology means we can feed our cravings or eager desires at the push of a button. Takeaway delivery apps make ordering food quick and convenient, and during the recent corona virus (冠状病毒) crisis, it provided a lifeline to those stuck at home with nothing to cook or who lacked the skills to prepare a meal for themselves. It’s estimated (估计) that in the UK alone, people eat three million takeaway meals a day, and the three biggest delivery apps together offer a choice of 100 cuisines from 60,000 restaurants. Amelia Brophy, Head of UK Data Products at YouGov, told the BBC that its research “suggests that the frequency of takeaways ordered is expected to increase in the future”.

It’s no wonder we are tempted and attracted to skip the grocery shopping, bypass the kitchen, and tuck into something that someone else has prepared. But ordering a deep crust pizza, a spicy curry or a box of noodles, can come at a price both financially and to our health. Eating too much processed and unhealthy fast food has some effect on obesity (肥胖) and the risk of developing certain metabolic and cardiovascular diseases. A few years ago, The BBC Good Food Nation Survey found that most people ate fast food on average two days per week. But, in the 16 to 20-year-old category, one in six ate fast food at least twice a day.

Of course, reducing salt, sugar and fat is one way to make takeaway food healthier, as well as offering smaller portion sizes. But the best advice you might want to take away from this Takeaway English is to find a recipe book and try making your own nutritious meal. And if you haven’t got time, try ordering a healthier alternative from the menu.

1. Why might some people choose to order a takeaway meal?
A.They might be too lazy to cook themselves.
B.They might never have the experience of cooking.
C.They might be so young that they can’t cook for themselves.
D.They might be too busy to cook or might be short of the skills to prepare a meal.
2. What is the quick and easy way to order your takeaway food?
A.Takeaway delivery appsB.A takeaway menuC.Grocery shopping.D.Going to the restaurant.
3. What’s the number of the takeaway meals eaten by people a day in the United Kingdom?
A.100.B.60,000.C.3,000,000D.3,000,000,0000
4. What does the last paragraph mainly talk about?
A.The reasons of the great need of takeaway food.
B.The suggestions of making takeaways healthier.
C.The increases of takeaways in the future.
D.The results of fast food.

9 . Friday was "Chatty Bus day", an experiment aimed at getting people to talk to each other on public transport. This is not an idea that would appeal to those who commute in the rush hour, because there is a smaller distance within which it's just as uncomfortable to talk. Elbow(肘) room is a precondition for sociability. It is no coincidence that the first truly personal music player, the Sony Walkman, was invented in Japan where the commuter trains are literally crowded with people.

We will also not talk to strangers who are physically too far away, of course. No one wants to shout their small talk. Only on country buses or similar unhurried and uncrowded forms of public transport can people reach out to their neighbors, confident that they are doing so from a position of strength and autonomy.

For all these drawbacks, the idea of talking to strangers is still a good one, and the promotion of sociability is good for society. Although it does seem to be a general rule that people are friendlier the fewer there are of them and more hostile and indifferent as cities get more crowded, there are still considerable cultural variations. And there is evidence that friendlier places are also healthier, and their inhabitants happier.

It is true that the apparent loneliness of many people on public transport is a false impression.

Many will be caught up with conversations with distant friends on their phones; some will be talking to the people in books. Some may be in willed solitude with their headphones. But there are always people who would be interested in an unexpected conversation with a stranger. This need not go on for too long.

It is not large and possibly life-changing conversations that are what most people in loneliness miss most. What they really need is not deep thought but superficiality. The kind of conversation that you could have with anyone reminds you that you yourself might be anyone. It is a release from the prison of the self, which is where lonely people serve their sentences, uncertain whether they ever can be paroled(假释). Friendship may be too rare a gift to hope for, but sometimes the kindest thing to say is also the simplest: "Don't be a stranger"-and sometimes that's also enough.

1. According to Paragraph 1, why the first Walkman appeared in Japan partly?
A.its corporate culture
B.its overcrowded public transport
C.its people's creativity
D.its people's desire for personal space
2. Which of the following belongs to "these drawbacks" underlined in paragraph 3?
A."Chatty Bus day" has not been introduced to other areas.
B.Walkman prevents passengers from talking to each other.
C.Passengers are unwilling to make small talk with strangers.
D.Improper physical distance discourages casual communication.
3. What is the author most likely to agree with?
A.Small talk to strangers will help ease loneliness on the road.
B.Lonely people are in desperate need of deep conversation.
C.People in less populated cities tend to be cold and distant.
D.It's inadvisable to talk to strangers who are physically too close.
4. What is the author's main purpose in writing the text?
A.To cast new light on human loneliness.
B.To introduce an experiment and its effects.
C.To advocate striking up conversations with strangers.
D.To explore the relationship between physical distance and willingness to reach out.

10 . Throwing away unwanted food has become a big issue in the world. While some of us throw away unwanted items, people in other parts of the world face food shortages and are starving. It’s a shocking fact that a third of the world’s food is wasted each year, which is enough to feed a billion hungry people.

You may think supermarkets are the main contributors to this mountain of food. After all, they do desert stuff that is past its sell-by-date and they often refuse to sell fruits or vegetables that are in the wrong shape or look damaged. They’ve also been criticized for encouraging customers to buy more than they need through promotions such as “buy one and get one free”.

But the biggest culprit for creating food waste is us human beings. In Europe, an incredible 53% of food waste comes from households, which results in 88 million tons of food waste a year. So instead of filling our bellies, our food is filling up landfill sites.

In Denmark, a woman called Selina Juul has been working hard to solve this problem. She moved from Russia many years ago and was amazed to see the abundance of food available in the supermarkets. But despite so much availability, she found that people were buying more than they needed and throwing too much away.

She convinced some supermarkets to stop selling their items in bulk (大量) so that people bought only what they needed. She produced a leftover cookbook and set up an education program in schools, which has helped create a significant 25% reduction in food waste.

Clearly, we need to think twice when we buy something in supermarkets or online, and when we’re at home we should make the most of the food we have — using recipes that use up our leftovers or even sharing our remaining food with our friends and neighbors.

1. Why are supermarkets to blame for food waste?
A.They store spare items.B.They damage bad stuff.
C.They display new arrivals.D.They hold sales promotion.
2. What does the underlined word “culprit” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A.Benefit.B.Demand.
C.Cause.D.Challenge.
3. What do we know about Selina Juul?
A.She contributed to reducing food waste.B.She made an extraordinary discovery.
C.She was a pioneer in cooking leftovers.D.She focused on the availability of food.
4. What does the author advise us to do in the last paragraph?
A.Start sharing extra food.B.Switch to online shopping.
C.Increase the varieties of food.D.Improve our cooking methods.
