2 . In October, 2019, Beijing Daily warned the youth that they shouldn't let Internet slang (俚语) deepen the generation gap(代沟),after People Daily started a discussion on Chinese microblog Weibo on how to "explain" the youth's Internet slang terms to parents. The post got 40,000 likes. People were commenting that they couldn't keep up with the rapidly developing Internet lingo (术语)in China.

People also fear that Chinese Internet slang will negatively influence broader linguistic (语言的) trends of Mandarin Chinese, in particular, the gradual taking over of pinyin, the romanization of traditional Chinese characters using the Western alphabet. As pinyin gets widely used when people text or write on mobile phones or computers, while less and less people write characters by hand, people gradually forget how to write them, which is called "character amnesia" in China.

2019s latest slang terms add a further simplification: the use of pinyin acronyms. "Awsl"   in pinyin, for instance, means Ah, wo si le (Oh, I'm gonna die), and is used if something is too cute or adorable. "Nsdd" stands for ni shuo de dui (you're right).

Certainly, as an age-old written language, Chinese has been evolving and developing over the years. But the Chinese Internet lingo is unlikely to replace the existing use of Mandarin Chinese, but will rather be enriching it by adding another layer.

Acronyms aren't new. They have appeared with the limited space available in early-generation cell phone messaging. Some of them have become a part of the English language, such as BTW (by the way) and LOL (laugh out loud), while others had a rather short lifetime. That's likely to be what's going to happen with China's Internet slang terms. Some are going to be old in a few weeks, while others might make it into mainstream use, and as they do, young net users are coming up with new slang words to differentiate themselves.

In China, using Internet slang means belonging to a certain generation that likes to watch the same talk shows, play the same games, etc., and therefore, creates unity. Older generations don't have to feel left out, and certainly don't have to fear a degradation (没落)of the Chinese language. While language development is unavoidable, Internet slang is not going to let 6,000 years of Chinese written language completely change overnight.

1. The public are worried about Chinese Internet slang abuse because
A.It's used by children to keep secrets from parents.
B.It can cause confusion even among young people.
C.It was invented in response to the limited messaging space.
D.It will rarely have a positive effect on linguistic trends of Chinese.
2. How do Chinese Internet slang terms affect the Chinese language?
A.They add variety to the language.
B.They are replacing its traditional vocabulary.
C.They make the language more global.
D.They only have temporary effects on Chinese.
3. By using Internet slang in China, people may get.
A.a sense of purpose
B.a sense of group identity
C.a sense of cultural pride
D.a sense of safety
4. Which could be the best title for the passage?
A.Is Media Helping Older Generation Understand Internet Slang?
B.Is Chinese Language Too Powerful to Be Largely Affected?
C.Is Mandarin Chinese Useful to Bridge the Generation Gap?
D.Is Internet Slang Deepening the Generation Gap, Ruining Chinese?

3 . It's a popular belief that a fish's memory lasts for only seven seconds. It may seem sad to think that they don't remember what they've eaten or where they've been, and they don't identify you or any of their friends — every moment in their life would be like seeing the world for the first time.

But don't be so quick to feel sorry for them. A new study has found that fish have a much better memory than we used to think. In fact, certain kinds of fish can even remember events from as long as 12 days ago. In the study, researchers from Mac Ewan University in Canada trained a kind of fish called African cichlids to go to a certain area of their tank to get food. They then waited for 12 days before putting them back in the tank again. Researchers used computer software to monitor the fish's movements. They found that after such a long break the fish still went to the same place where they first got food. This suggested that they could remember their past experiences.

In fact, scientists had been thinking for a long time that African cichlids might have a good memory. An earlier study showed that they behaved aggressively in front of certain fish, perhaps because they remembered their past “fights”. But until the latest findings, there was no clear evidence.

Just as a good memory can make our lives easier, it also plays an important part when a fish is trying to survive in the wild." If fish are able to remember that a certain area contains safe food, they will be able to go back to that area without putting their lives at risks, “ lead researcher Trevor Hamilton told Live Science.

For a long time, fish were placed far below chimpanzees, dolphins and mice on the list of smart animals. But this study has given scientists a new understanding of their intelligence.

6 . Ultra haulers are the world’s biggest trucks. They deal with rocks and dirt at places called surface mines (露天矿山). Workers use mining tools to dig up dirt and rocks, and then pour them into the ultra haulers. The haulers drive away to unload. Then they come back to get filled up again.

An ultra hauler is heavy! It would sink into the road if it were driven to the mines where it would work. So after it is built, it has to be taken apart again. The pieces are loaded onto trains or tractor-trailer trucks, and then delivered to the mine. When the pieces arrive, workers put the truck together again.

Today’s biggest haulers can carry 400 tons. That is the weight of about 243 cars. Even without a load, they weigh between 250 and 400 tons—the weight of about 40 elephants. If two of those elephants stood on top of each other, they would just reach the top of one truck. Hauler drivers have to climb stairs up to the truck’s cabs, nearly 20 feet off the ground.

Larry Conner test-drives (试驾) ultra haulers for a company building giant mining equipment. “Driving an ultra hauler is like driving a two-storey house,” Larry says. “You sit in your upstairs window, take the steering wheel, and start driving. It’s really great. ”

A few years ago, people in Sparwood, British Columbia, got together to save a special ultra hauler. It was the Terex Titan, the longest ultra hauler in the world. The truck had been used at a local mine for 12 years. Its huge engine cost so much to run that it had to be put out of use.

The coal company and the people of Sparwood did not want the Terex Titan to go to the scrap(废料)pile. They collected donations and volunteered their time to make the truck ready for display. Many visitors see the giant truck every year.

1. What’s the function of ultra haulers?

4. What can we infer about the Terex Titan?
A.It was too old to use.B.It was donated to a company.
C.It will be on show for some time.D.It will end up as waste very soon.

7 . My daughter Maggie and my husband Mark were united desiring for a dog on Maggie’s 11th birthday. I held different ideas. But why, they argued. “Because I don’t have time to tend a dog.” But we’ll do it. “Really? You’re going to walk her? Feed her? Bathe her?” Yes, yes and yes. “I don’t believe you.” We will. We promise.

They didn’t. From day two, neither of them thought to walk the dog. While I was slow to accept I would be the one to keep track of her shots, take her to the vet (兽医), feed and clean her, Misty knew this on day one. As she looked up at the three new humans in her life (small, medium, and large), she figured out, “The medium one is the sucker in the pack.”

As the months went on, she and I developed a very comfortable relationship. Even so, part of me continued to complain about walking duty. Mark and Maggie had promised. Not fair.

Then one day about one year later, Mark’s doctor said an unthinkable word: cancer. With that, I spent ten hours a day with Mark in the hospital, doing anything I could to ease his discomfort. Actually, I realize that I wanted to walk Misty. The walk in the morning was a peaceful time to gather my thoughts and the evening walk was a time to shake off the day’s upsets.

8 . The ice around Alaska is not just melting. It's gotten so low that the situation is endangering some people's food and jobs.

“The seas are extraordinary warm. It is affecting the ability for Americans in the area to put food on the table right now,” said University of Alaska climate expert Rick Thoman.

Ocean temperatures in the Chukchi and North Bering seas are nearly 5°C above normal, satellite data shows.

“The northern Bering and southern Chukchi Seas are baking. And there are immediate local and economic influences along the state's western and northern coastlines. Birds and sea animals are showing up dead and sea temperatures are warm enough to support algae (藻类) to grow rapidly, robbing sea animals of oxygen and sunshine.” he said.

Many coastal Alaska towns are facing dire situation since they depend on fishing to support their economy and feed people who live there.

“Much of what the people eat there comes from food they harvest themselves,” said Brian Brettschneider at the International Arctic Research Center. “If people can't get out on the ice to hunt seals or whales, that affects their food security. It is a human crisis (危机) of survival.”

The warming is a sure signal of a warming planet, according to Brettschneider.

“This event is unquestionably a reflection of our changing climate. And this year's conditions will have a lasting effect. These extraordinary warm waters will take a while to cool off as winter approaches, and later and thinner ice is expected in the coming winter.” he said.

“What is happening in coastal Alaska is what is coming in one sense for everybody else,” he said. “Most people are feeling the effects of climate change even if they don't know it. Changes are happening, and changes will be more obvious. ”

10 . Water is everywhere, from soil to the cells inside our own bodies. Depending on factors like location, age, and sex, the average human is between 55-60% water. So what role does water play in our bodies, and how much do we actually need to drink to stay healthy?

The water in our bodies works to adjust temperature, and to nourish(滋养) the brain and other body parts. Water isn't only in our blood. An adult's brain and heart are almost three quarters water, while lungs are 83% water.

If we are mainly made of water, why do we still need to drink so much? Well, each day we lose two to three liters(升) through our sweat, urine(尿) and even just from breathing, which helps our bodies get rid of waste. While these functions are necessary to our survival, we need to compensate for the water loss. Keeping a balanced water level is essential to avoid dehydration(脱水), which can have bad effects on overall health. Dehydration is usually caused by over consumption of water in a short amount of time. It can cause obvious drops in energy, mood and blood pressure. In severe cases, it will cause headache, and even death.

However, on a normal basis, maintaining a well-hydrated system is easy to manage for those of us who are fortunate enough to have access to clean drinking water. For a long time, it’s commonly believed that we should drink eight glasses a day.   But now it is suggested that the amount of water we need to drink depend largely on our weight and the environment. The recommended daily intake varies from between 2.5-3.7 liters of water for men, and about 2-2.7 liters for women.

While directly drinking water is the healthiest, coffee or tea can also be alternatives to make up for water loss. Water within food makes up about a fifth of our daily water intake. Fruits and vegetables like strawberries and cabbage are over 90% water, and can provide valuable nutrients as well. Drinking well also has various long-term benefits. Studies have shown that it can lower the chance of stroke(中风) and reduce the risk of certain types of cancer. No matter what it is, getting the right amount of liquid makes a healthy life.
1. Which of the following belongs to the functions of water in our bodies?
A.Removing body waste.B.Increasing temperature.
C.Causing drops in energy.D.Improving blood pressure.
2. What does the underlined phrase “compensate for” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A.Reduce in.B.Increase in.
C.Make up for.D.Hold back.
3. What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A.We should drink eight glasses a day.
B.Only directly drinking water is healthy.
C.All people should drink 2.5-3.7 liters of water.
D.Weight will influence the amount of water we need to drink.
4. Where is the text probably from?
A.A health magazine.B.A doctor’s diary.
C.A food magazine.D.A travel brochure.
