文章大意:本文是一篇说明文,介绍研究人员通过分析北极熊雪地脚印中的DNA, 创造了一种保护北极熊的开创性方法。

2 . Polar bears are icons of the Arctic. Detailed monitoring of their populations is crucial for their conservation—but because polar bears are so difficult to find, we are missing critical data about population size. Scientists have now developed a new tool to help: DNA analysis using skin cells left in the bears’ footprints in the snow.

The scientists were inspired by the techniques that can be applied to tiny, degraded DNA samples. With these techniques, it isn’t necessary to physically capture bears, which can be stressful and dangerous for both bears and humans. Instead, the researchers can turn to the snow tracks of polar bears and look at sources of DNA left in passing—environmental DNA. "The tracks usually contain fresh cells, and the DNA is intact because of the cold’ storage’ temperature, "said Dr. Melanie Lancaster of the World Wide Fund, lead author.

The scientists collected snow from individual tracks made by Alaskan polar bears in the wild. Additional materials like hair and saliva(唾液)were sampled, confirming that the tracks provided accurate genotype(基因型) 24 wild polar bear tracks were sampled. The researchers melted and filtered the snow to collect environmental DNA, then carried out micro-satellite analysis. Although the concentrations (浓度)of DNA taken from trucks sampled in the wild were very low, 13 of the wild polar bear samples could be genotype, identifying 12 different individuals.

This technique has huge potential to inform conservation of these animals, to better understand their populations and behavior. Although the sampling has a lower success rate, ease of collection means that it can significantly expand sample sizes.

"We hope this method will be taken up by the polar bear research community, with the involvement of hunters, volunteers, and local communities, as a new way to collect information on polar bears, "said Lancaster. "We also hope the method will be expanded to other animals living in snowy environments. "

1. Why do scientists develop the new method?
A.To improve the environment in the Arctic.
B.To protect humans from the polar bears attack.
C.To find solutions to global climate change.
D.To gather essential data for monitoring polar bears.
2. What does the underlined word “intact” mean in paragraph 2?
A.Unknown.
B.Undamaged.
C.Unusual.
D.Unstable.
3. What did the scientists do in the study?
A.They tracked and caught polar bears in the wild.
B.They recorded the bears’ behaviors with cameras.
C.They analyzed DNA from polar bears’ snowy footprints.
D.They compared the polar bears’ genotype with other animals?
4. What is Lancaster’s attitude toward the method?
A.Disapproving.
B.Favorable.
C.Uncertain.
D.Suspicious.

3 . I was surprised to find the congestion (拥塞) outside Layla’s primary school was unusually absent—I’d driven right into a parking space, and I was on time, for once. The school bell rang, and in a moment a stream of children made their way through the gate. But something was different—the kids were piling into vehicles in threes and fours.

Before I could enquire my daughter Layla, Mr Trent, the deputy head, approached. “Mrs Pavis, did you not read our letter?” Letter? What letter? I had a history of not looking out for them, and not reading them in most cases. “The letter? Of course. It must have just slipped my mind—I’ve been away with work.”

Now I was digging around in Layla’s messy schoolbag at home. Eventually, I found several letters, all addressing the same topic—parking outside the school gates. Apparently with some parents parking illegally, the police were about to get involved. “Why didn’t you give me these letters?” I demanded. Layla shrugged. “I forgot.” I was about to launch into a severe lecture when it occurred to me that I had always forgotten—I had forgotten to give Layla her money for cookery that morning and forgotten to hang out the kids’ washed clothes.

I contained myself and figured out that they wanted the parents to car-pool (拼车). I spent the next half hour ringing round Layla’s friends’ parents, enquiring if they would like to car-pool with us. Unfortunately, they were all sorted. It was my own fault—I should have read those letters ages ago. “Er... I overheard others talking about it,” Layla said, “They said they didn’t know who would car-pool with us, because we’re always late.” I flushed instantly. We were a disorganised family, and I was the one to blame.

I resolved to change. With responsibility for my kids, I find I am never, ever late. It’s good for Layla and for her older brothers, and it’s good for me, because now I never leave the house unprepared. I’ve even started checking the kids’ schoolbags for notes from school.

1. What did the author notice when the school was over?
A.It was hard to find a parking space.B.Children were picked up in groups.
C.Her daughter was absent from class.D.She arrived much earlier than others.
2. What stopped the author criticizing her daughter?
A.The reflection of her daily routine.B.The realization of her carelessness.
C.The knowledge of her kid’s character.D.The awareness of her kid’s depression.
3. Why did others refuse to car-pool with them according to Layla?
A.Because they contacted them late.B.Because they failed to keep the house tidy.
C.Because they couldn’t be on time.D.Because they ignored the school’s request.
4. What can we learn from the passage?
A.Action creates motivation.B.Mother’s love never changes.
C.It’s never too late to mend.D.Patience is the key to success.

5 . The phrase “Keeping up with the Joneses" has been an American saying for decades, likely coming from a picture book, which describes a family in a constant straggle to achieve the social status of their neighbors, the Joneses. While the picture book is long gone, the saying remains and the phenomenon still exists.

The Joneses are everywhere, living a successful and wealthy life. Their skin is beautiful, their body is perfect, and they have much money. They have the good house, pets, smart children and they seem never to struggle. For people, the Joneses take the form of a particular family and they regard the Joneses as a description of perfection.

We tell ourselves constantly if we could become someone just like our neighbors, we would be happy. However, as we compare ourselves with others, we notice the deep pain that these comparisons bring about. Well then, what do we do about the Joneses? We should remind ourselves nobody is perfect and perfection is an illusion. So we should train our brains to question or change the distorted (歪曲的) ways of thinking, and see the big picture.

While the methods above do help us see others more clearly, the methods alone won't solve the problem. Moving away from comparison means turning inward to address our insecurities and inviting more mercy. From there, we can honestly begin to notice what we want for ourselves and work to reach those goals. That, finally, is the road to a peaceful mind.

As we move away from the comparative model of judging worth and stop seeing others, success as a treat, we can even feel glad that the Joneses have meaningful careers. We can hope their marriage is happy, their bank account is full, and that their children are successful. We can hope good things happen to the Joneses.

1. What does Paragraph 2 mainly talk about?
A.How "the Joneses" live.
B.What your neighbors have.
C.Why "the Joneses" are perfect.
D.How your neighbors affect you.
2. Which is the eventual benefit of giving up comparison?
A.Being grateful to life.B.Understanding others.
C.Gaining peace of mind.D.Being close to perfection.
3. What does the author advise us to do?
A.Follow our neighbors.B.Avoid perfect people.
C.Show our love to other people.D.Treat others with a normal attitude.
4. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.How Do We Become Perfect?
B.Should We Keep up with the Joneses?
C.How Should We Get on with Neighbors?
D.Does the Phenomenon of Comparison Exist?

7 . As a boy, I wanted to go to the South Pole. As a teenager, I decided I'd like to go to the North Pole too. And yet, I haven't done either. It had taken me 31 years to just make it to the Arctic.

I was traveling with a film crew from Northern Ireland, following the footsteps of Lord Dufferin who, in the 1850s, sailed from Scotland to the Arctic. As an early adventure tourist, he was driven by the desire to see what lay at the ends of the world.

As we sailed north, icebergs of the size of buses floated past our small boat. Finally, we reached our destination—English Bay, where Dufferin landed- and stepped off onto the horseshoe-shaped beach.

This was what I'd dreamt of: standing somewhere so pure and primitive. However, for many early polar explorers, the results were far less pleasant. The south, in particular, was source of extreme danger.

My childhood interest in the South Pole was fueled by the unsuccessful yet heroic adventures of Emest Shackleton. He died in 1922 while preparing for his fourth adventure. The stories of Robert Falcon Scott are also well-known: he and four companions died on their way back from the South Pole.

So why do explorers put themselves at such risk?

Much of it seems to lie in the purity of the challenge. Scott talked of the appeal of a place that had been “unreached and unseen by humans.” “With a view over shining lands covered by ice-sheets of inconceivable extent, you have the feeling of living over the control of death,” said Fridtjof Nansen, a Norwegian explorer.

On the homeward journey the weather turned and we were left for a few days at the mercy of a storm. We experienced a small taste of helplessness when faced with the raw power of nature. We should be grateful for the great explorers’ spirit and stories. I know I am.

1. Why did the author begin his adventure tour?
A.To assist a film crewB.To realize a childhood dream
C.To memorize Lord DufferinD.To challenge a world record
2. Which of the following best explains "inconceivable" underlined in paragraph 7?
A.Hard to controlB.Too far to reach
C.Hard to imagineD.Too bright to view
3. What happened during the writer's journey?
A.They were trapped in icebergsB.They were kept off the destination
C.They were attacked by a stormD.They were rescued by explorers
4. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A.The Appeal of the Ends of the WorldB.The Dream of Traveling to the Arctic
C.The Victory over the Control of DeathD.The Gratitude to Great Explorers Spirit

8 . Here on Earth where most of us live, we spend about a third of everyday lying down sleeping and two-thirds standing or sitting in an upright position.

That's not really how it goes in space when people are weightless and the zero gravity environment causes more liquid to shift to the head. Faces get swollen, legs lose volume and appear to be smaller. Many astronauts have complained of eye and back problems after coming back down to Earth and its gravity.

And now scientists say they have discovered some new risks with long-term space flight. A study published recently in JAMA Network Open, a medical journal, examined 11 healthy astronauts who had been on the International Space Station for six months. Eight of them had unusual characteristics observed in their blood. For instance, six of the astronauts had reverse (反向的)blood flow from their heads.

The lead author of the study says he doesn't know if that's actually harmful. The blood is still leaving the head from other pathways, so flowing backwards through a jugular vein(颈静脉) may not be dangerous. But he says it does show a change in how blood moves through the body while in space.

Another issue the study found was blood clots (凝块). One astronaut had one. Another showed signs of a partial blood clot. That is potentially harmful as the clots can block the flow of blood to the lungs. The astronaut who had one was treated for the rest of the spaceflight and made it home safely.

What does all this mean? Well, one researcher says these issues have probably been oc- curring since humans first went into space and that they would likely resolve themselves when astronauts came back down to Earth. Knowing about them now gives doctors something else to monitor when people leave our atmosphere.

1. What causes the physical problems for astronauts?
A.Sleeping for a long time.B.The zero gravity environment.
C.Staying in the spaceship.D.The shift in their bodies.
2. How many issues did the study newly find?
A.Four.B.Three.C.Two.D.One.
3. What can we know about the blood clot?
A.It is a common problem.B.It is a new kind of disease.
C.It is a threat to people's health.D.It was first found by astronauts.
4. What may be the best title for the text?
A.Doctors have a new task for astronauts
B.Zero gravity stops astronauts flying in space
C.It's dangerous for astronauts to fly into space
D.New risks are found in long-term space flight

9 . Brushing your teeth twice a day should keep the dentist away. But if a group of scientific researchers have their wish, it will make the rest of your body healthy too. A toothbrush that checks blood sugar and bacteria while you brush is currently in development in the USA. It is one of many gadgets(小器械) proposed by engineers and doctors at the Center for Future Health in New York.

The gadgets seem fanciful, but the basic principles are simple. The gadgets should make it easy for people to detect illness long before it strikes and so seek treatment far earlier than normal. Instead of relying on hi-tech hospitals, the emphasis(重点) is shifted to the home and easy-to-use gadgets. In the long run, the technology may even prevent illness by encouraging us to lead healthier lives.

Intelligent bandages are a good example. Powerful sensors within the bandage could quickly identify tiny amounts of bacteria in a wound and determine what medicine would work best. The cut could then be treated instantly.

The biggest development is melanoma(黑色素瘤) monitor designed to give early warnings of cancer. It could be used to take a picture of your body each week, and then compare it to previous images. If a problem is found, the system would advise you to get a check-up.

If all this sounds worrying, then help is at hand. Experts are also working on a “digital doctor”, complete with a comforting bedside manner. A standard computer would be able to understand your voice and answer questions about your symptoms in plain English and in a way which could calm your nerves.

Stress is no sweat either. A portable communication aid could recognize certain phrases and tones and let you know when you are about to lose your temper. The software would also suggest ways of keeping your cool.

Researchers are still struggling, however, with making the technology cheap and simple enough for the household user. That is going to be the difficult part.

1. The gadgets mentioned in Paragraph 1 ________.
A.are used only in hospitals
B.are too complicated to operate
C.help people recover from illness
D.can detect disease as soon as possible
2. A melanoma monitor can benefit ________.
A.those dealing with stressB.potential cancer patients
C.people suffering a woundD.people who’ve got toothache
3. The underlined part “keeping your cool” in Paragraph 6 can be replaced by “________”.
A.staying calmB.stopping sweating
C.keeping handsomeD.expressing in words
4. It is difficult for scientists to ________.
A.persuade people to use the gadgetsB.design inventions to prevent illness
C.collect enough money for their workD.make the gadgets affordable and handy
5. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A.A Doctor in the HouseB.Hospitals in the Future
C.Tips for Brushing your TeethD.The History of Medical Equipment

10 . Happy workers are productive workers. So it should come as no surprise that companies are increasingly investing in training techniques to improve employee happiness. The question is whether these measures are effective.

New research published in the journal Frontiers in Psychology may have an answer. A team of scientists from Erasmus University analyzed the results of 61 happiness training studies published between 1972 and 2019. They found that 96% of the studies showed a gain in happiness after intervention and about half of the positive results were statistically significant.

Overall, the researchers estimate that such trainings increase people’s happiness by about 5%. To put that in context, the researchers note that getting married has also raised happiness by about 5% and becoming unemployed reduces happiness by 8%.

Then which techniques work best? More studies are needed to answer this question, but the researchers note that trainings like cognitive reframing work better. There’s also something to be said for exposing people to various types of trainings within a given course. For instance, the researchers found that happiness courses that trained employees on several techniques instead of just one were more effective. They also found that voluntary participation contributed to training effectiveness. This suggests that organizations would be wise to make such courses available to employees rather than force them to.

In addition, the researchers also highlight the difficulties. Sometimes chasing happiness can also lead to unintended negative emotions. Besides, genetic factor can be difficult for environmental interventions to overcome.

Still, the researchers regard happiness training as advisable both for individuals to look for a more satisfying life and for organizations to have more productive workers.

1. In paragraph 3, the researchers show the significance of happiness training by .
A.giving explanationB.making a comparison
C.introducing a conceptD.referring to another study
2. According to the passage, happiness training might work better if .
A.workers are given more rewardB.the courses focus on one technique
C.workers are willing to participate in itD.the courses provide interesting activities
3. What is the researchers’ attitude towards happiness training?
A.Favorable.B.Uncertain.C.Doubtful.D.Disapproving.
4. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A.Are Workers Really Happy?B.Is Happiness Training Effective?
C.Why Does Happiness Training Count?D.How to Increase Employees’ Happiness?
