2 . A first-year undergraduate student in Chengdu, recently complained online that her mother refused to raise her monthly allowance to 4, 500 yuan ( $ 633) even when she said her current allowance 2,000 yuan was not enough to cover her expenses, sparking a debate on how much money a college student needs per month. One expert shares his views on the issue with China Daily: Students should pursue education, not comfort.

Even for a college student studying in a first -tier city in China, 2, 000 yuan is enough to cover all his or her monthly expenses. In fact, for a college student in Chengdu a monthly allowance of 2, 000 yuan is more than enough. According to a survey conducted by a bookkeeping platform, the average monthly expense for an undergraduate in cities other than Beijing, Shanghai and Hangzhou was less than 2, 000 yuan in 2019; for Chengdu, it was 1, 900 yuan.

Claiming that she can hardly afford new clothing and cosmetics with her 2, 000 yuan monthly allowance, the undergraduate student in Chengdu criticized her mother for refusing to raise her pocket money. Her “meager” allowance, she said, prevented her from buying branded goods that her hostel-mates enjoyed.

By the time a person enters a college, she or he should have developed a healthy consumption habit. And a youth should adjust her or his consumption according to her or his family income. On a deeper level, the money they spend in college should depend on how much they value their parents’ hard work. Besides, some college students could take up part-time jobs to meet their monetary needs if they feel their parents don't or can’t send them enough money. In this way they can also learn to meet the requirements of life in the future and develop healthy consumption ion habits. More importantly, they should always bear in mind that education is their top priority in college.

1. What's the expert' s attitude to the issue about the undergraduate student?
A.supportive.B.neutral.C.He was critical.D.He was unconcerned.
2. In 2019, the undergraduates’ average monthly expense in Hangzhou was ________.
A.less than 2, 000 yuanB.633 dollarsC.more than 2, 000D.1, 900 yuan
3. Which of the following best explains “meager” in paragraph 3?
A.Empty.B.Fruitful.C.Mean.D.Pitiful.
4. What does the last paragraph mainly talk about?
A.College students should keep their expenses in line with their family conditions.
B.College students should deal with their living expenses problems reasonably.
C.College students consumption level is determined by their parents.
D.College students should take up a part-time job to cover their expenses.

3 . I went snowboarding in France with my little brother and what we lacked in skill was made up for in enthusiasm. That day, fresh snow had been falling. We stopped near the top of an off-path section. I let my brother disappear into the trees ahead, figuring I would soon catch up.

I began to pick up speed when I was suddenly thrown off balance. Just as I was regaining control, I ran into the trunk of a large tree. It was like hitting a solid wall. The pain was instant.

I quickly realized the situation could get very serious. Nobody would be coming past. There was no phone signal. It was snowing and cold. If I waited, I would probably be rescued eventually. But the chance of freezing to death before that happened was too high for me to risk staying put.

I managed to get the board off from my feet and moved it under my stomach so I was lying on it. I faced down the mountain and used the board to slowly drag and slide my body down the steep, tree-lined slope (斜坡).

It took about two hours before a skier found me and I got help. I couldn't feel my hands or my toes from the cold, but the relief at knowing I was safe was massive.

I had broken one of my backbones, so I had an operation where the doctors inserted plates. The constant pain was unbearable, but it wasn't as bad as seeing the pain and worry I put my family through.

The recovery road was tough, but I was lucky. Gradually, I was able to walk, then swim, then cycle and then run. I haven't been back to the slopes yet, but it might happen someday— I will, however, choose the paths.

1. How did the author feel at the start of snowboarding?
A.Confident.B.Amused.C.Nervous.D.Panic.
2. Why did the author choose to go ahead after the accident?
A.He was cold and hungry.

C.He was aware of the risks of waiting.
D.He wanted to catch up with his brother.
3. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A.Follow the safer path.
B.Do more sports activities.
C.Receive training in the future.
D.Never go snowboarding again.
4. What is the purpose of this text?
A.To share a lesson.B.To keep a diary.

5 . "What kind of rubbish are you?" This question has brought about complaints over the past months in Shanghai. On July 1st, 2019, the city introduced strict trash-sorting rules. Residents must divide this waste into four separate groups and throw it into specific public bins.

Shanghai is faced with an obvious environmental problem. It produces 9 million tons of rubbish a year, and the number is rising quickly. Like other cities in China, it has relied on trash pickers to pick out whatever can be reused. But as people get wealthier, fewer of them want to do such dirty work. The waste, meanwhile, just keeps piling up.

Many people appear to be bothered by the rules. Rubbish must be divided according to whether it is food, recyclable, dry or hazardous (有害的), the differences among which can be complex and confusing. Some have complained that they must put food waste straight in the required public bin, forcing them to tear open plastic bags and throw it by hand. Most annoying is the short scheduled time for throwing trash, typically a couple of hours, morning and evening. This means that people all go at the same time and anyone can keep an eye on what is being thrown out; no one wants to look bad.

People who fail obey the rules could be hit with fines of up to 200 yuan. For repetitive violators, the city can add black marks to their credit records, making it harder for them to get bank loans or even buy train tickets. However, citizens support the idea of recycling in general and say a tough campaign is necessary. "Slowly people will get used to it," says Li Chongjin of Fudan University.

1. What is the purpose of the first paragraph?
A.To amuse the readers with a question
B.To introduce a hot topic about trash dividing
C.To present a social problem in Shanghai
D.To offer a way to deal with the complaints
2. The underlined word "violators" probably means____________
A.trash-pickersB.waste-throwers
C.law-makersD.rule-breakers
3. What upsets people most about the trash-sorting rules?
A.Being forced to keep plastic bags open.
B.Being required to tell different kinds of rubbish apart
C.Being seriously punished for improper behavior
D.Being asked to throw trash at the short scheduled time.
4. What is Li Chongjin's attitude towards the future of trash-sorting rules?
A.HopefulB.Dissatisfied.
C.Doubtful.D.Uncaring

6 . The human brain remembers negative experiences more easily than positive ones. Our brains have developed in this way because threats, like dangerous animal, have a more immediate effect on people's survival compared to positive things like food or shelter. As a result, you clearly know what makes you unhappy, but do you know what makes you happy?

Research suggests that our level of happiness is partly shaped by the choices we make. If you've been chasing wealth, fame, power and some material things, you may be looking for happiness in the wrong places. Psychologists suggest that the following habits can make people happier.

People who own close relationships tend to be happier than those who do not. The number of our friends is not important. What matters is the quality of our relationships. Relationships that bring happiness usually consist of the sharing of feelings, acceptance, mutual respect and trust.

People who exercise regularly can improve both their physical and mental well-being. Some research has shown that exercise can be as effective as some medicine in treating depression.

If we are so interested in an activity, we may lose track of time, and we can be in a state of flow. The activity could be playing the piano, surfing the Internet or playing a game. People who experience flow in their work or life tend to be happier.

People are more likely to be happy if they know what their strengths are and can use them regularly. People are especially happy when they can set goals and use their strengths to achieve them.

People, who think positively by being grateful, mindful and optimistic, are more likely to be happy. Being grateful means being thankful. Being mindful means considering, focusing on, and enjoying the experiences of the present moment. Being optimistic means being hopeful about the future.

7 . Some of the world's great cooperators might just live in your backyard. In Canada, citizens may recognize lichen(地衣)from local parks or favorite hiking trails. Lichens are completely self-sufficient, needing nothing but sunlight and a place to stay; they can live in many tough environments like desert cliffs.

A group of enthusiasts in Canada is pushing forward with a plan to get Canada to adopt a "national lichen" And more than 18,000 Canadians weighed in with a vote organized by the Canadian Museum of Nature(CMN)in Ottawa. The reindeer lichen appeared to be victorious, with 26. 6% of the vote. Now the results will be handed to the Department of Canadian Heritage to consider.

This all may seem am unnecessary risk during the novel coronavirus pandemic. But Toby Spribille, a professor at the University of Alberta, says, "On the contrary, it's time when people are facing a universal challenge that calls for global cooperation to beat it. There's something about lichens that forces people to think about working together, Because as soon as people realize that its symbiosis(共生关系), they will think about cooperating with each other"

Canada has the highest lichen biomass in the world. They are abundant in northern forests and across the Arctic. They are the primary winter food source for one of Canada's most beloved animals and provide nests for other species. They have been used in dyes and medicines. Some help fix atmospheric nitrogen in the soil and prevent soil erosion(侵蚀). They are also indicators of air pollution.

Whether national lichen could ever be as universally recognizable as the maple, the country's national tree, remains to be seen. But Dr. McMullin puts heart into his defense. "Why is a tree more important than a lichen? Because it`s big? We should appreciate the small things in life, because they're all part of an ecological system.”

1. What's the character of lichens?
A.They can survive easily.
B.They usually live in shade.
C.They hide well in the wild.
D.They have attractive looks.
2. What is the purpose of the vote held by CMN?
A.To elect a national lichen.
B.To attract more visitors to CMN.
C.To find the most precious lichens
D.To make lichens well-known to citizens
3. What does Paragraph 4 mainly talk about?
A.Habitats of lichens.
B.Features of lichens
C.Nutritional benefits of lichens.
D.Practical applications of lichens.
4. What do Dr. McMullin's words in the last paragraph imply?
A.We have a large ecosystem
B.Maples are as beneficial as lichens.
C.Sizes of plants determine their uses.
D.Small plants deserve equal attention.

9 . If humans ever hope to live on the Mars, the settlers will need to produce a series of organic compounds (有机化合物), from fuels to drugs, which are too expensive to ship from Earth.

Chemists from University of California, Berkeley, and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab) have a plan for that.

For the past eight years, the researchers have been working on a system combining bacteria and nanowires (细菌和纳米线) that can catch the energy of sunlight to change carbon dioxide (CO,) and water into building blocks for organic things. Nanowires are thin wires about one-hundredth the width of a human hair, used as electronic parts, and also as solar cells.

“On Mars, about 96% of the atmosphere is CO2. Basically, all you need is these nanowires to take in the solar energy and pass it on to these bacteria to do the chemistry for you,” said project leader Peidong Yang, professor of chemistry and the S.K. and Angela Chan Distinguished Chair in Energy at UC Berkeley. “For a deep space task, you care about the weight, and biological systems have the advantage that they self-reproduce: You don’t need to send a lot. That’s why this version is highly attractive.”

The only other requirement, besides sunlight, is water, which on Mars is relatively more than enough in the polar ice caps and likely lies frozen underground over most of the planet, said Yang.

It works like photosynthesis (光合作用), which plants naturally employ to change CO2 and water into carbon compounds, mostly sugar and carbohydrates. Plants, however, have a quite low efficiency (效率), usually changing less than one-half percent of solar energy into carbon compounds. Yang’s system is comparable to the plant that best changes CO2 to sugar, which is 4~5% efficient.

1. What is the function of the new biological system?
A.Reducing air pollution on Mars.
B.Carrying many organic things to Mars.
C.Helping to produce organic compounds on Mars.
D.Making building blocks without sunlight.
2. Why is the self-reproduction possible on Mars?
A.There’s plenty of CO2, water and sunlight on Mars.
B.Mars is much easier to land than other planets.
C.Spaceship technology has developed a lot.
D.Lots of oxygen was found on Mars.
3. What can we learn about Yang’s system according to the last paragraph?
A.It doesn’t need carbon dioxide and water.
B.It can be replaced by plants in space.
C.Its efficiency is higher than natural photosynthesis’s.
D.It functions based on rules different from photosynthesis.
4. In which part of a newspaper may this text appear?
A.Life.B.Science.C.Health.D.Education.

10 . One North Carolina business owner is helping the homeless by opening up his parking lot to people who may be living out of their cars.

James Charles is the owner of Kiplin’s Automotive Group in Charlotte, North Carolina. For about two months, he has been encouraging people sleeping in their cars to use the company’s parking lot as a safe place to sleep at night.

Charles was first encouraged to do something helpful after his team tried to take back a woman’s car back in January.

“The gentleman who was taking back the car said, ‘We can’t take the car; there’s somebody living in the car,’” Charles told WBTV.

Then he tried to get the woman into a homeless shelter (收容所). But he was shocked to find that every shelter in the city was full. Although he paid for her to stay in a hotel for a few nights, he knew that there were other people suffering from the same thing.

Charles made a Facebook post: “We would like to provide a safe place for those going through this tough time. We can’t put everyone in a hotel, but we can get you a safe place for the night.

Since more and more people have shared his post, people have donated (捐赠) hats, scarves, food, and even an easy-to-move toilet for the parking lot. Not only that, but about 20 different people have helped Charles with his offer by parking their cars overnight at the lot.

These kind acts also made it possible for Charles to start his non-profit (非盈利的) organization, HALO Now. The organization was set up to raise money for the homeless people of Charlotte — and he has raised more than US$30,000.
