1 . Some teens are disapproving of compulsory BMI (body mass index) （身体质量指数） checks in PE classes. Do BMI checks at school do more harm than good? Two teens take sides.
Maya Meade, a high school freshman in Ohio, says yes. “I understand that schools want to weigh students because they are concerned about their physical health. That’s not a bad thing! But what about their mental health? For many students, appearance and self-image are huge sources of stress. Forcing teens to be weighed at school will only increase the pressure they feel to fit a certain mold (模子)”, says Maya.
In Maya’s opinion, weight is a personal matter that should stay between a doctor and a patient. She says, “Just imagine someone who struggles with body image being told that his or her BMI is too high as classmates look on! Even if other kids can’t hear, no student wants to feel judged by his or her teacher. That’s not why we go to school.”
Maya thinks if a school wants to have an impact on a student’s physical health, there are better ways to do it, such as providing healthy but filling meals, encouraging physical activity and teaching students about nutrition.
Ben Bagbek, a second-year student in a high school in New York, holds a different opinion. “There is no reason why a school should not be allowed to weigh its students and teach them how to calculate BMI! Obesity (肥胖症) is a huge public health concern in our country. And schools are in a position to help students understand what their weight means to their health -- before they’re at risk of life-threatening conditions.”
“A school’s job is to help students reach their full potential, and your health undoubtedly plays a role in your academic performance. BMI is not a perfect measurement, but it can help you identify the need for healthier eating habits or more physical activity.” says Ben.
The bottom line is: When you feel good, you learn better. As long as the actual number on the scale stays private, it should be viewed as an important part of your health education.

2 . Around the World by Wheelchair
Rick Hansen was always an active kid and loved to fish. When returning in a truck one day from a fishing trip, he had an accident and suffered injuries to his spine (脊柱). This 15-year-old young man awoke to find that he had lost the use of his legs. However, he didn’t give up. Many months later he began to compete in wheelchair sports. At the age of 27, he decided to wheel around the world to raise awareness and money for spinal cord research. His tour took him through 34 countries around the world between 1985 and 1987. In this Man of Motion World Tour, he wheeled 24,901.55 miles, which is equal to the distance around the earth.
Bad weather and difficult, rocky roads often provided challenges for Rick, but he continued to push himself to complete the trip. He was determined to succeed. Even mountains did not stop Rick Hansen. He wheeled himself up the Rocky Mountains and several other major mountains in the world. He even wheeled himself along the Great Wall of China!
“Never Give Up On Your Dreams” was his motto and he hasn’t given up yet. He completed his world tour raising $24 million. He continues to work to increase knowledge of spinal cord injury. He is a true Canadian hero who shows what determination can achieve.

Fausto Ruiz got off the boat at the port of the city where he was born fifty years ago, and to which he had been away for twenty years. There were lots of new buildings up on the hills around the city now, buildings which he didn’t recognize. He walked up the main road and saw that there was still one small cafè there which was the same as it had been. Walking into the cafè, he recognized the owner behind the bar as well as the waiter working there. They both looked much, much older. Fausto sat at a table and waited. He raised his arm and shouted to the waiter, then to the owner behind the bar, but it was useless. They didn’t come and ask him what he wanted. They were ignoring him.
Angry, Fausto got up and walked out of the cafè. Such ignorant people, he thought. Now I remember why I left this town twenty years ago, and why I never came back.
He walked along the main street as far as the main square in the town, and when he arrived there he remembered the other reason why he had never come back. In the main square there was the theatre. He had a terrible memory of what happened there twenty years ago.
Twenty years ago, Fausto Ruiz was the most famous singer in the world. He had sung in all of the most famous opera houses in the world. Everywhere he went, people paid large sums of money for tickets. When they saw him sing they clapped and applauded and cheered. When he was at the height of his fame, Fausto decided to come back and held a concert in the theatre.
The concert was announced, and all the tickets sold out within a few hours. Thousands of people crowded into the theatre to see the legendary Fausto Ruiz sing in the theatre.
There was silence as Fausto walked onto the stage. Then he began to sing, one of his best known songs. And at the end of the song, there was just silence. Fausto waited, very surprised for a moment, and then started to sing another song. At the end of this song, there was silence for a moment. Then the people began to boo, and to hiss. Fausto tried to cover the noise by singing another song, very loudly this time. But it got worse. The louder he sang, the louder the boos and hisses became. Soon, there was a rain of rotten fruit and vegetables and smelly old shoes falling down. Fausto was extremely angry. He stormed off the stage and out of the theatre. He left his hometown that night, and he said that he would never, ever go back there ever again.
Now, he decided to walk into the theatre. As he walked in he saw it was the same man selling tickets in the box office. Fausto said hello to him but the man said nothing and ignored him. “Still the same” thought Fausto. He felt sad, and left the theatre and decided to see the house where he had been born.
He walked all the way across the town, expecting to be recognized by people. He saw some men in the park, who were the same age as he was, and he remembered them. They were his friends when he was at school. He walked over to them to say hello, but they, too, ignored him.
He was so angry and so disappointed that he began to shout, “I am the great Fausto Ruiz!!!
The greatest singer the world has ever heard!!!” Nobody took any notice of him.
When he finally reached his old house, he at least had a pleasant surprise. Outside the house, there was a statue（雕塑）, and it was a statue of himself. “Finally!” thought Fausto, “Somebody has recognized my genius!”
Fausto went to have a closer look. There was some writing at the bottom of the statue. “Fausto Ruiz” it said, “Singer”. Fausto was disappointed that it did not say “the greatest singer in the world”, but at least it was a statue. There was some more writing. He looked carefully at it. There was his date of birth, fifty years ago. And then there was something else. It was another date, and it was yesterday. …It was the date of his death.

4 . Ray Tokuda,a 54-year-old Japanese American,takes pride in the title his school has already given him.He is a Shifu,a Chinese word literally meaning a master,mentor or senior practioner of martial arts.
Surely, he has reason to be proud.He has been involved with Chinese martial arts for almost 40 years.After learning them at the martial arts school in New Mexico State,he is among the most experienced kung fu teachers of the school today.
Practicing martial arts two to three hours and helping students improve their skills have become Tokuda’s daily routine.He expects to practice and teach martial arts for the rest of his life.“I’m still learning.It’s worth more than a lifetime to learn Chinese martial arts,”he said.“Once I started,I just couldn’t stop.I think it’s also the magic of Chinese culture.”
Tokuda was sent to the martial arts school when he was 10.He still remembers how unwilling he was when starting out.“I remember my father had always wanted to learn Chinese martial arts but never got the chance,so he put his kid in,”he said.“I was so afraid at that time because I thought kung fu was all about fighting.”
But things changed after he learned that martial arts were more than punching and kicking.
“One of the things martial arts teach me is to overcome adversity,”Tokuda said.“As a little kid,my first lesson was like,oh,look,this is a thing that I can get through by diligence,perseverance（毅力）and dedication,and that was priceless for my life.”
Learning Chinese martial arts opened a gateway for him to better understand the culture of China.
Meanwhile,Tokuda has also been invited to various events in his home state to showcase traditional Chinese culture,including the dragon dance and lion dance,which he also learnt at the martial arts school.Because of this,he is now considered a cultural envoy(使者)in the eyes of the public.

Rory, studying music, added, “As the man walked past me, he said ‘Thanks’ and that meant a lot to me. I do feel good because I helped save his life.”
Another neighbor said, “I heard a lot of noise but thought it was coming from the railway opposite. I couldn’t believe it when I saw the man hanging there. The boy next door really did save his life by calling the firefighters.”

This time, they found that the red containers were filled with 90% real waste. Only 10% of recyclable materials had been thrown into the red containers. Matt and Sam were pleased with their efforts.
