2 . Even if trees cannot walk, they are still on the move.

In parts of the Arctic, entire forests are moving northward. Across the Arctic, temperatures are rising faster than anywhere else in the world. As that happens, the tree line that marks where forests stop and the treeless tundra (冻原)starts has been moving northward. Trees growing along the tree line must protect themselves from the cold wind. To do this, plants tend to grow horizontal (水平的)branches low to the ground. The energy it takes for trees to grow this way means they don’t have enough energy to make seeds.

But as Earth's climate has been warming, trees no longer have to just grow horizontally. Many can instead grow up toward the sky. This takes less energy. And with all that leftover energy, these trees have started producing while spruce (白云杉)grows.

White spruce, which is a North American tree, is quite which can   lot of seeds, which can move long distances in the wind. When wind-blown seeds end up on the   tundra beyond the tree line, they     eventually can sprout(发芽)new trees. This explains how a forest can move. Of course, the process would work only if the tundra were warm enough. But in recent years, the whole planet has been warming.whole planet has been warming, New trees will provide shelters for some snow, keeping the sun's rays from making the white surface disappear.

The trees absorb the sun's heat. This warms the even more trees to produce seeds. That further   makes     forest preventing much of it from being blown   away. Snow can trap heat in the soil below, which encourages trees to grow. The recent rise of temperatures has helped more trees grow past the tree time. People worry about effects on the animals that depend on frozen conditions for food and shelter.

1. What is the main cause of the trees in the Arctic moving northward?
A.The reducing of northern tundra.
B.The strong and cold wind
C.The rising temperature.
D.The rich resources in the north.
2. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A.New trees can trap the snow, which may make the soil colder.

3 . Sometimes picking the right music or lighting for a dinner date can be daunting, but research suggests you should be focusing on the color of your napkins too.

A new report examining the relationship between colored napkins and the flavor of food found that color is a powerful contributor. The report reveals which colors pair best with which dishes to help give your dinners an extra bit of flavor. Napkin brand Tork partnered with Swedish food stylist and chef,Linda Lundgren, who paired dishes with a range of colored napkins.

She told trade magazine The Caterer : “How do you make a strawberry mousse sweeter and richer-tasting? The answer isn't more strawberries and sugar. Instead, try serving the dish with a coral pink napkin. The color actually increases the perception of sweetness and decreases bitterness, making it perfect for desserts. ”

“The experiments found that aqua blue napkins enhance the flavor of eggs and Indian food. This is because it brings out orange and yellow as contrast colors and makes the dishes seem less salty, " Ms Lundgren said.

Coral pink helps to decrease the bitterness of dishes like grapefruit and makes meals taste sweeter, while pink or rose red works best with desserts.

Mustard yellow helps to improve the flavor of green dish such as sprouts and salads,as well as tart flavors including fish and sea food. Anthracite grey helps to contrast the tones of lighter colored table settings and meals ,   meaning grey napkins give Mediterranean food a richer taste.

4 . Most people feel lonely sometimes, but it usually lasts only between a few minutes and a few hours. This kind of loneliness is not serious. In fact, it is quite normal. For some people, though, loneliness can last for years. Now researchers say there are three different types of loneliness.

The first kind of loneliness is temporary. This is the most common type. It usually disappears quickly and does not require any special attention. The second kind, situational loneliness, is a natural result of a particular situation-for example, the death of a loved one, or moving to a new place. Although this kind of loneliness can cause physical problems, such as headaches and sleeplessness, it usually does not last for more than a year.

The third kind of loneliness is the most severe. Unlike the second type, chronic(长期的) loneliness usually lasts more than two years and has no specific cause. People who experience habitual loneliness have problem socializing and becoming close to others unfortunately, many chronically lonely people think there is little or nothing they can do to improve their condition.

Many researchers agree that the loneliest people are between the ages 18 and 25, so a group of psychologists decided to study a group of college students. They found that more than 50% of the students were situationally lonely at the beginning of the term as a result of their new circumstances, but had adjusted after a few months, 13% were still lonely after seven months due to shyness and fear. They felt very uncomfortable meeting strangers, even though they understood that their fear was not reasonable. The situationally lonely students overcame their loneliness by making new friends, but the chronically lonely remained unhappy because they were afraid to do so.

Psychologists are trying to find ways to help habitually lonely people for two reasons: they are unhappy and unable to socialize and there is a connection between chronic loneliness and serious illness such as heart disease. While temporary and situational loneliness can be a normal, healthy part of life, chronic loneliness can be a very sad, and sometimes dangerous condition.

1. How would you treat temporary loneliness according to the passage?
A.Talk to friends.B.Go to see a doctor.

C.a new placeD.situational loneliness
3. All of the following are true EXCEPT that ________.
A.situational loneliness can cause physical problems
B.temporary loneliness does not need special attention
C.chronic loneliness can cause problems in socializing
D.37% of the students can overcome loneliness easily
4. Where can we probably read the passage?
A.Comic books.B.A novel.

6 . November 11th, also known as the “bare sticks holiday”, and a day originally meant for young people to celebrate being single, has become the world’s largest 24-hour online shopping carnival. Forum (论坛) readers share their opinions.

Blonde Amber (Ireland)

There is nothing to be proud of to be in a country that spends so much online on a particular day. It does nothing more than show the superficiality (肤浅) of the temporary pleasure of shopping, and produces nothing more than a mountain of environmental waste. I bet there is plenty of “buyers’ remorse” after this day.

Vivian (US)

Since it is Singles’ Day, I guess only the single population of China should buy something to relieve social pressure. The married might be excluded (排除) from the festival.

Alex (US)

Singles’ Day was initiated (创始) by a group of college students to celebrate being single, or not having a girlfriend or boyfriend. They think poor guys should buy something on the day to entertain themselves. But Jack Ma got hold of the opportunity, hit the jackpot and successfully made it a yearly shopping spree(狂欢).

George (Canada)

I work in Shanghai. Many of my young female colleagues are still single. They simply haven’t time to date, as they tend to work long hours and travel two hours by subway to get to and from work. Singles’ Day is a day when they spoil themselves with online shopping.

Patrick (Australia)

I don’t care if it is Singles’ Day or a shopping spree. It sounds fair enough to me. Just a click and I can get the best deals I have ever seen delivered to my door, and save money and time.

7 . There are thirty-four bridges on the Thames River in London, the following are among the most famous ones.

Tower Bridge

Tower Bridge has stood over the River Thames in London since 1894 and is one of the finest, most recognizable bridges in the World. It is the bridge in London you may see in movies and on advertising writing for London. Tower Bridge is the only Thames Bridge that can be raised. It used to be raised about 50 times a day, but nowadays it is only raised 4 to 5 times a week.

London Bridge

The construction of the first stone London Bridge started in 1176 and finished years later. Houses and shops were once built on the bridge, which made the road so narrow that it was often jammed with people, horses and carts. A ‘keep left’ rule was made in 1733 to keep the traffic moving. This became the rule of the road in Britain. In 1757 the old bridge was pulled down and a new one was built in 1831. Interestingly, that one was pulled down again in 1967 but rebuilt in Lake Havasu City, USA, as a tourist attraction. The present London Bridge was opened in 1973.

Millennium Bridge

The Millennium Bridge is a bridge for walkers. It was built to connect the Tate Modern Art Gallery to the City and St Paul’s Cathedral (圣保罗大教堂) in 2000. Thousands of people rushed to see the new bridge. Almost immediately after opening, the bridge had to be shut because of the dangerous waving caused by too many visitors. It has now been reopened. The bridge is about 320 meters, costs 16 million pounds to build and only takes walkers.

Westminster Bridge

Westminster Bridge is a road and foot traffic bridge over the River Thames between Westminster and Lambeth. The present bridge, opened in 1862, is the second on the site and took the place of an earlier bridge opened in 1750. The British romantic poet, William Wordsworth, wrote a famous poem “Composed Upon Westminster Bridge” in the autumn of 1802.

8 . I first saw a crayfish (小龙虾) around 2001. A friend brought one into the office and told me it was a female animal that was reproducing (繁殖) on its own. We realized the new type of animal   was reproducing itself by the millions.

We think that in the 1990s, two crayfish got children either in a pet store or in the wild. Something went wrong and one of the daughters laid eggs without any males. It’s not unusual for such a sudden change like this to happen, but normally, the children can’t live on or reproduce, and the new type won’t spread. For some reason, this daughter and her children did.

In some way, many of the new crayfish appeared in German pet stores. They would naturally increase, and their owners would often set the children free, which let the animals reproduce and spread farther. In 2003, scientists officially proved that animals like crayfish were, in fact, reproducing themselves. They’ve gone from that single female 25 years ago to millions, or maybe billions, of the same crayfish found throughout Europe and Madagascar.

In 2018, we published a map of the clones’ genetic code (克隆类遗传密码图). This type is becoming a really useful tool for researchers like me: We can use crayfish-like animals to study everything from cancer development to the effects of drugs on the brain. Now that we know this code, we can start to try it in the lab. For example, we might try to make these animals grow to larger sizes so people can sell them for food. This is already happening in Madagascar. It turns out that crayfish are pretty tasty. It’s easy to get lots of them too because they grow up in about three months and lay hundreds of eggs. Just put one in a pool and wait.

1. What do people think happened to crayfish in the 1990s?
A.Crayfish’s children could not live on or reproduce .

3. The research on the birth of crayfish will be helpful in __________.
① diet       ② medicine       ③ brain       ④ ocean
A.①②B.③④C.①③D.②④
4. Where could the passage be picked from?
A.a cookbookB.a science magazineC.an advertisementD.a guide brochure

10 . Have you ever been faced with trying to stay positive when others around you are negative? A negative person can bring you down and throw your positive plans out of the window. Whether you deal with a family member, friend or co-worker who is negative, there are things you can do to remain positive in the face of negativity?

Whatever you do, don’t argue with a negative person. Arguing only adds fuel to the fire. I have noticed when my children are crabby, it is best to avoid trying to convince them to analyze and adjust their attitude. As soon as I take the approach of being in opposition to them, the situation gets worse before it gets better. Sometimes the best thing to do is remain silent and let negativity pass.

You know how difficult it can be to give love and positive attention to negative people. Unfortunately, that is often exactly what they need. A negative person is usually afraid he is unlovable. How do you show love when someone is negative? You must listen to what he is trying to tell you. Acknowledge the feelings he has by saying something like, “You sound very angry right now.” How might you help a negative person? Offer a hug even if you get rejected. A negative person often has difficulty accepting love from others.

If you have negative people on your life who are affecting your mental and physical health, you need to decide whether or not you want these people in your life. Some people are so negative that you have no other choice but to remove them from your life. However, some people, such as your children, are difficult to remove from your life, in this case, professional counseling(咨询) may be the answer.

1. What does the underlined word “crabby” in Para.2 mean?

A.Negative people need care.
B.Negative people make us happy..
C.Negative people can be hurt easily.
D.Negative people are hard to get along with.

A.Focusing on positive things.
B.Trying to change negative thoughts.
C.Controlling our own negative thoughts.
D.Staying away from some negative people.
4. In which section of a magazine can we most probably read the text?
A.HealthB.Relationships
