2 . Join the discussion ……

LakeLander — 2 hours ago

Today, a man talked very loud on his phone on a train between Malvern and Reading, making many passengers upset. I wonder how he would react if I were to read my newspaper out loud on the train, I have never had the courage to do it, though.

Pak50 — 57 minutes ago

Why not give it a try? Perhaps you should take lessons on a musical instrument. The late musician Dennis Brian is said to have asked a fellow train passenger to turn off his radio. When his request was refused, he took out his French horn(号) and started to practice.

Angie O’Edema — 24 minutes ago

I don’t see how musical instruments can help improve manners in public. Don’t do to others what you wouldn’t like to be done to yourself. Once, a passenger next to me talked out loud on his mobile phone. I left my seat quietly, giving him some privacy to finish his conversation. He realized this and apologized to me. When his phone rang again later, he left his seat to answer it. You see, a bit of respect and cooperation can do the job better.

Taodas — 19 minutes ago

I did read my newspaper out loud on a train, and it turned out well. The guy took it in good part, and we chatted happily all the way to Edinbergh.

Sophie 76 — 8 minutes ago

3 . American and Canadian ocean scientists are taking an unexpected opportunity presented by the coronavirus pandemic(冠状病毒大流行). They are trying to discover whether Pacific Northwest whales benefit from the drop in boat traffic and underwater noise.

Stay-home laws have greatly reduced entertaining boat trips and ferry crossings this spring. Commercial(商业的)whale watching tours remain on hold. Large ships carrying goods continue to come and go less often. Noise and boat disturbance are considered main reasons for the decrease of the Northwest’s endangered killer whales besides reducing food supply and pollution.

“From a killer whale’s point of view, not having fast moving boats around might be quite beneficial,” said oceanographer Scott Veirs of Seattle, who is in charge of an underwater microphone network called Oreasound.

However, the decrease in sea traffic by the coronavirus pandemic may be short-lived, meaning archers have to act fast to document if the quieter seas make happier, healthier whales.

“We are all trying to remain ready,” Veirs said. “If the pandemic continues to affect boat traffic for the next couple of months, we’ll have a very rare activity when noise levels are reduced. I hope that happens, opportunity to observe killer whale activity when noise levels are reduced. I hope that happens.”

The population of killer whales in the waters of the U. S. Pacific Northwest and southwestern British Columbia has reduced to around 73. They use sound to hunt. locate and communicate, and noise from boat engines can affect the sound waves they make for echolocation(回声定位). Other larger whales that live in Northwest waters communicate over longer distances in a frequency band(波段)that is almost the same with the low frequency noise made by large container ships.

Viers believes if we continue to not have any commercial whale watching and limit our entertaining boating, the killer whales would certainly experience less of noise disturbance with the boats.

A.Stricter laws on ocean pollution.
B.More whale watching tourists.
C.Reduced noise and boat disturbance.
D.Increased food supply.
2. What is the concern of Scott Veirs?

4 . China has taken new measures to boost new-energy vehicle (NEV) and home appliance consumption. On June 6, the National Development and Reform Commission, the Ministry of Ecological Environment and the Ministry of Commerce jointly released a guideline. It aims to upgrade the country’s consumption and form a strong domestic market in 2020.

According to the guideline, the cost of NEV production will be largely lowered and the research of a new generation of NEV batteries will be accelerated. Local governments are strictly banned from imposing any limit on the consumption and use of NEVs. Places where the limits exist should call them off. The guideline also encourages local governments to subsidize (补贴) the purchase of first NEVs of car-free families and reduce parking fees for NEVs. In this way, the move would help meet the demand for millions of vehicles in cities across the country, analysts say.

Amid the flat market in China’s auto industry, “methods to boost consumption in the auto market are still being rolled out in first-tier cities such as Beijing and Shanghai,” said Cui Dongshu, secretary-general of the China Passenger Car Association.

Some netizens held that the measures could be difficult to carry out in metropolises due to traffic pressure. Cui responded that “the traffic problems could be eased by upgrading the traffic management systems.” Cities like Beijing and Shanghai should address traffic problems in different areas based on their different levels of congestion (堵塞) through corresponding driving restrictions. The restrictions on NEVs could also be eased in some far-reaching areas in the cities, he explained.

China saw strong and healthy sales growth of NEVs in the first four months this year with 360, 000 NEVs sold, jumping by 59.8 percent from the same period a year earlier. The market could see a new round of increases under the efforts, according to industry experts.

A.No parking fees are allowed for NEVs.
B.The research of new NEV batteries will be sped up.
C.Families can be subsidized when buying their first NEVs.
D.Local governments have no right to monitor the use of NEVs.
4. What does Cui Dongshu think of the measures?

5 . For a long time, the smartwatch industry had just a few big companies that could set any prices they wanted and kept cheating customers. But now one new tech company is turning the $5 billion smartwatch industry on its head. The company called OshenWatch has found a way to offer a far advanced product at a part of the original price.

Let’s meet the OshenWatch. OshenWatch combines the functions of a fitness band (手环), digital watch, and health monitor all into one. It feels comfortable to wear. Even better than some of the expensive smartwatches I own from other big tech companies. Extreme indoor and outdoor sports? No problem, the hardened aluminum shell (铝壳)and the lowered-temperature touchscreen glass won't break easily even if you tried.

In my opinion, the OshenWatch is the next generation of smartwatches. Take calls, sleep monitoring, show incoming messages, etc…The watch has all the basic functions that a good smartwatch must have and much more.

What makes the OshenWatch so popular? The green laser (激光)behind the watch is the secret! It is the heart rate monitoring function. This watch lets you measure your blood pressure, heart rate, blood oxygen level, calculate your beats per minute. Give you extremely important time to catch problems early, and seek medical help before it's too late.

This is the reason why the OshenWatch will be the best-selling smartwatch of 2020. No other watch is that advanced. It could actually save your life one day!

6 . Cars could be able to "talk" to each other to warn about dangers on the roads using 5G technology in future, according to researchers.

Researchers at Glasgow Caledonian University (GCU) believe 5G may enable driverless cars to send each other messages about dangers such as ice or deep holes.

And they believe the high-speed, low -delay (低延迟的) nature of 5G will improve driverless cars to the point where they will be safer than the cars being driven today. They predict the number of road traffic accidents which cause more than 1. 3 million deaths and up to 50 million people injured worldwide every year will drop greatly as a result.

Dr Dimitrios, a member of the research group, said, “To have a better idea of what the future will look like, think of having cars that not only use sensors (感应器) to find what's around them, but also can talk to each other about safety information nearby.”

“I'm sure anyone who has had a bad experience on frozen roads would have benefited from knowing about the dangerous conditions ahead of time so they could have changed their speed or, if possible, even avoided that route (路线) altogether.”

With the help of 5G, an early warning system in vehicles will come into use within the next few years. Cars that are close enough to the danger area will pass warning messages to other cars around them using communication technologies, but also to cars further away using 5G, fast and reliably. Then those cars will send the same information to cars near them and 80 on, forming a joined-up.

5G is an exciting mobile technology, which will give a great boost to smart cities and autonomous (全自动的) vehicles among many other things.

8 . In the desert, there is very little rain and it is very hot in the day and so cold at night. If you walk or drive through the desert, it might be wise to know what you should do in order to survive in the desert.

Drink a little water every hour. But how can you get water in the desert? If you find a small piece of land where the earth is wet, dig inside to look for water. Another method of getting water is to cover a green plant with a plastic bag. As it breathes, the water vapor (水蒸气) will collect inside the bag. Little by little, you can collect enough water to drink.

Plan to travel at night and sleep during the day, if you find you have to survive in the desert for a period of time. If you can find something that makes you cool in the desert, use it as a shelter (遮蔽物) to protect you from the strong sunlight.

Wear clothing in light color. It may seem like you’ll be cooler if you wear that kind of clothes, which actually helps your body to become cool and helps protect you from being sunburnt.

Prepare to signal planes passing overhead if you are caught in the desert. During the day keep a smoky fire burning and at night, a bright, clean burning one. In this way, you are more likely to be saved.
