Crows Drink Water
There was only a little water in a bottle which had a long and narrow neck. A fat crow came to the bottle and drank the water by a straw. He was enjoying the water when another thirsty crow went by. Accustomed (习惯于) to the way of drinking water taught in books, the thirsty crow was very surprised. He asked the fat crow, “Why don’t you drink water as the book told us?” The fat crow replied,“Because this method can make me drink water faster.”
I had just walked in the door after dropping off the costume I had made for a friend’s daughter when I noticed the light blinking on my answering machine. It was my friend saying, “I know you worked hard on the costume and it looks very nice, but Janet doesn’t like all those decorations. Could you change them?”
Annoyed, I started to call her back-until I suddenly thought of Grandma’ love and what she had once done for me long ago when I visited her in New York City.
It was in the summer when I was eight. I could still see the chalk on the sidewalk marking a game of hopscotch (跳房子) outside her building. As I entered, I could smell the pine oil the cleaner used to wash the hall floors. Flying upstairs, I knocked on Grandma’s door. Grandma had something special planned every day. She had saved a few coins so we could go to a picture show. One day we threw bread to pigeons; another day we watered the evergreen on the fire escape.
At the end of the week, Grandma decided to curl my hair. She told me I was going to look like Shirley Temple. She spent a long time on each curl, and I could tell she enjoyed styling my hair.
When she was finished, she sighed with delight. She was so proud. She had me stand on a chair to look in the mirror. My heart sank. I looked ridiculous.
“You can go out and play now,” Grandma said, smiling.
I nodded and slowly walked down the stairs. I looked out the small window in the door and could see the neighborhood kids playing hopscotch. My best friend, Ducky, spotted me and began to jump up and down. She waved to me to come outside, but I couldn’t move. I knew everyone would laugh at the curls. At the same time I couldn’t go back and tell Grandma how I felt.

“Okay, guys, I have to make a quick announcement!” Our teacher held up the brochures so all the students could see them. “These are brochures filled with information about an opportunity to become an exchange student and experience different parts of the world. I will pass them around so you may look at them.”
When my friend, Jenny and I received them, we started reading immediately. I was impressed by all the colorful and bright pictures of high schools with their animal mascots, host families who were smiling into the camera together with their exchange students, soccer players on the field and cheerleaders who were performing in a gym in the UK. The picture of the cheerleaders caught my attention. Two girls were standing on the floor with the third girl’s feet on their shoulders. I also loved the pictures of the host families. I imagined how it would feel to life with a foreign family. I felt that I wanted to experience a life in another country and to learn about its people and culture.
I was continually dreaming of going to a different country for ten months, living with a host family and going to a high school abroad. But it was almost the end of grade two and I thought there was no possible chance for me to do this in my following year of high school.
“I would love to have an exchange year in the UK. It’s too bad that I am late for applying for this.” I said with a disappointed voice. “No, you’re not! You’re probably too late to apply for it in grade three, but now you still have time.” Jenny said. I regained my hopes of going to the UK as an exchange student.
I applied to become an exchange student in the UK. I had to fill out many forms about my hobbies, my dreams, my strengths and weaknesses. Also, I had to write what I thought about Britain and a letter to my future host family.
