3 . 阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Every October, my neighborhood has a Halloween costume contest, And every time, my neighbor Ollie and I would race to the announcement board in the park to find out the theme.

One year, the theme was “Dress up as your favorite book character”. Another year, it was “Be something scary”. But this year, the theme was kind of, well, themeless. The board wrote “Be creative”. It was told that the judge would prefer something original. When I examined the paper on the announcement board, I was totally confused, since it was not really a theme. Ollie hopped off his skateboard to get a closer look. “You’re right,” he agreed.

“Since we don’t know exactly what we want to be yet, we should start by choosing some cool costume-making materials,” Ollie instantly scooped up a bunch of fallen leaves from the oak and proposed using leaves. It seemed impossible to make an entire costume out of leaves, Not to mention these terrible-looking yellow leaves. However, Ollie scooped up some more and try to persuade me, “They’re totally free and I can guarantee, no one will be a tree as great as me,” “Don’t you mean, a tree as great as we?” I grinned, We ended up filling two jumbo bags with different leaves. Ollie’s grandma, Abuela helped get us set up with tons of excellent costume-making supplies, We tried on part of our costumes, making the “branches” by gluing (粘) the leaves to our arms. We could tell the “trees” really would be tremendous, On the morning of the contest day, it took us hours to get ready, and we probably lost half our leaves shuffling over to the park. Still, when it was time for contestants (参赛者) to line up in the judging area, I felt pretty proud.

4 . 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

Farah was checking the party list with her mother. The exams were over and Farah wanted to invite her special friends for a party.

“Farah, aren’t you going to invite Hafsa?” her mother asked. Hafsa had been her best friend who lived across the street but now Farah had made new friends. “Mother, I am now a part of Purple Girls Club and we have rules about friends,” Farah answered hesitantly. “What rules?” her mother asked sarcastically (讽刺地).

“Only very pretty girls can be in our group. Hafsa is ... dark. I can’t be seen with her. It’s bad for my image.” “Farah, I can’t believe you base your friendship on appearance rather than character. I had expected better judgment from you than this nonsense,” her mother retorted (反驳)  angrily.

Farah sank into silence. In her heart she knew her mother was right. Sometimes she too felt uncomfortable with her “cool” friends.

Just then, her father called, “Farah, come here.” Farah went and paled when she saw the report card in his hands.

“Farah, how come you failed each subject? You were my pride.” Her father questioned.

She hated to see such look of disappointment in his eyes. The truth was that the Club left her with little time for studies. The girls got together almost daily for movies, shopping, and partying. It had seemed like so much fun but now it left a bitter taste in her mouth.

“Farah?” her father asked again , but Farah just hung her head in shame and did not answer.

“Farah, you shall take supplementary (补考) papers next month.”

Knowing how strict her father could be, Farah went to her room and opened her copies.

Seeing her homework filled with red crosses, Farah felt awfully terrible. How could she have neglected(忽视)her studies so much?

She called Gina, the leader of the Club. “Gina, can you lend me your copies? I need them to complete my notes for the exams.” Gina erupted into laughter. “Exams? Who cares? Farah. There are other ways of passing them.” Farah replaced the phone quickly. Even in desperation, she could never cheat.

One by one, she called her so-called friends but no one was willing to help.

5 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

It was the first swim meet of the year for our newly formed middle-school swimming team. The atmosphere during the three-hour bus journey was filled with anticipation as the group of forty-eight young teenagers thought of nothing but victory. However, the excitement turned into shock as our kids got off the bus and stared in disbelief at their muscle-filled Greek-god-like opponents.

The coach checked the schedule “Surely there has been a mistake,” he thought. But the schedule only confirmed that this was the right location and time.

The two teams formed a line on the side of the pool. Whistles blew, races were started and races were lost. Haifway through the meet, coach Huey realized that there were no participants for one of the events.

“Okay kids, who want to swim the five-hundred-yard freestyle?” the coach asked. Several bands shot up, including Justin’s “I’ll race, coach!” he shouted. The coach looked down at the youngest boy and said, “Justin, this race covers twenty lengths of the pool. I’ve only seen you swum eight”.

“I can do it. Coach. Let me try,” Justin insisted . Coach Huey hesitantly agreed. ”After all, “be thought,” it’s not the winning but the effort and determination that build character.“

The whistle blew and the opponents rushed through the water and finished the race in just six minutes and fifty seconds. The winners gathered on the sidelines to socialize while our group struggled to finish. After three more minutes. the last exhausted (筋疲力尽的) members of our team came out from the water-except for Justin.

Justin was stealing breaths as his hands slapped against the water, pushing i: aside to push his thin body forward. It appeared that he might go under at any minute, yet something seemed to keep pushing him forward.

“Why doesn’t the coach intervene?” the parents whispered among themselves. “It looks like he’s about to drown, and the race was over four minutes ago.”

Daniel was the new boy in our school. The teacher assigned (安排) me to him. He couldn’t hear or talk. So he had an adult with him. She explained what professors were teaching in sign language (手语). Sometimes I got caught staring at him and my friends teased (嘲笑) me all day. I noticed him going everywhere all alone with no friends at all. Sometimes I felt worried, maybe even concerned.

We were assigned as lab partners and surprisingly he wasn’t as bad as I thought. We would both sit quietly and do our work. But when it came to communication and his translator wasn’t there.it was a mess. At first, I could barely understand what he was doing with his hands. I could see in his eyes that he was getting annoyed at me. From trying to communicate with sign language he moved to pictures and words. That worked well for both of us, but my drawing skills were not as good as his, so I stuck towards and gestures.

The second semester went by well and quickly. Daniel and I understood each other pretty well. I could understand some of his hand movements. I realized that Daniel was different from anyone. I’d ever met me included. When he saw that people couldn’t understand him, he came up with another way of communicating. His artistic (艺术的) ability was matchless (无敌的). Then he became my best friend and we both understood each other pretty well despite our differences. During the winter break. 8 . 阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

When I was little, like many others, my family was so poor. All my clothes were hand-me-downs and my shoes were worn out. The shoes were only cast aside when they were too broken. I had a sister then. She and her family had moved west and settled down in Colorado. When she could, she helped out by sending us their old clothes.

One day, shortly before Thanksgiving, a package arrived from my sister. All of us eagerly gathered around as my mother opened it. Among the items inside, there was a pair of shoes that caught our attention. They were brown with pointy toes, unlike anything we had seen before. I wondered why my sister had chosen to send such unusual shoes.

My mother handed me the shoes, apologizing for the lack of options and explaining that I would have to make do with them as winter approached. The shoes were different from what I was used to, and I felt a mix of embarrassment and disappointment, unsure of how I would be seen by others.

The next day, I wore the shoes and went to school, anxious. When I reached the schoolyard, Timmy, a classmate, yelled, “Evan’s wearing girls’ shoes!” Instantly, the other kids turned their attention to me, and I hurried to the classroom, hoping to escape their judgment and trying to hide my feet.

By mid-morning, we were talking about the West. At about this time, our principal, Mr. Weber came into our classroom and joined the discussion. He excitedly talked about cowboys’ lives, “I remember the cowboys and their unique style. One thing that always stood out was their oxford shoes(牛津鞋).” Then he paused with his gaze fixed on my shoes.

Paragraph 1:
Suddenly he stopped near my desk and went silent.

10 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Mrs Flippen’s class sat listening to a talk being given by a local author. Tucker sat absent-minded in one of the library chairs. Most of the students wanted to hear about the writer’s work. Tucker did not.

“Why bother?” Tucker thought to himself. He always received low marks on his writing assignments, no matter how hard he worked on them. He could never think of anything interesting to write about.

“Does anyone have any questions?” Mrs Flippen asked her class.

Tucker raised his hand, “How do you know what to write about?”

“Well, sometimes I don’t,” the author replied. “It takes a lot of hard work to come up with ideas.” She reached down and pulled a worn-looking book from a cloth bag on the floor. “I find making a scrapbook (剪贴簿) helps.”

Tucker sat up a little straighter in his seat. “What’s in the book?” he asked.

“I fill it with pictures, stories, and notes about things that interest me.” The writer opened the scrapbook on her knee. “When I need an idea, I look through the book instead of staring at a blank page.”

Tucker thought about the author’s scrapbook as he walked home. He thought about staring at a blank page each time he tried to write a story. Digging in his bookcase, Tucker found an old binder (活页夹). He filled the binder with notepaper from his desk. After supper, Tucker cut some pictures out of the newspaper. Then he drew some pictures of his own. He cut and pasted (粘贴) stories from his old magazines. Then he looked up the words he did not know and wrote down their meanings.

In the days and weeks that followed, Tucker collected more ideas. He found that the more he collected, the easier it became to find things to collect. Tucker’s book of ideas grew fatter and fatter.
