One afternoon, Ava drove to her 4-year-old son’s kindergarten to pick him up. When she arrived, as usual, her son Noah came running and said, “Hi, Mom!” It brought a big smile to Ava’s face. “Did you have a good day, sweetie?” she asked. “Yes,” Noah replied.
“Alright, let’s get your things and go home,” Ava said. Noah sat down on one car seat in the back, carrying his school bag which contained books, candies, etc. Then, Ava started the car. “So tell me about the PE class today. Did you have fun?” Ava asked. Noah said he did and explained happily. Ava watched traffic while listening to him.
The mother and son were quiet for a couple of minutes. And Ava started to think about what to make for dinner. “How about having some pizza when we get home?” Ava asked Noah. When he didn’t answer, Ava wondered what he was thinking. She knew her son liked pizza, but maybe he wanted something else this time. “You like pizza, don’t you?” Ava asked. Still, Noah didn’t answer.
Ava looked over her shoulder, seeing Noah’s face turning red. He couldn’t speak at all. “Oh, my God! What happened?” Ava asked. She had just passed a four-ways top, and there was a wide, grassy shoulder on the road where she pulled off and jumped out of the car, She ran to the other side of the car and freed Noah from the car seat. His face was still bright red and he couldn’t speak, Clearly, he was choking (噎住)!
Ava cried out for help and called 911 while pounding her hand against Noah’s back, trying to save her son. But nothing was changing. Suddenly sat all man appeared next to them and took Noah from Ava’s arms. His truck was parked behind them. He held Noah with the boy’s back against his stomach. And, the man thrust (猛推) his hands into Noah’s abdomen (腹部), trying to remove whatever was choking him. Still, nothing happened. Then another family pulled over ahead of them.

It was a very cold morning as it had been raining very heavily the previous night. As my mother was feeling a little uncomfortable, my sister volunteered to drive me to school. I overslept and as a result, was a bit late for school. We got into the car hurriedly. The roads were already jammed with traffic. It appeared that everyone was late as well.
My sister was a careful driver and despite the fact that I was late, she refused to drive fast on the slippery road. I was lucky she was such a determined and careful person because a few hundred meters away from the school, we witnessed an accident.
It all happened in an instant, as most accidents do. A car took a left turning without signaling and a school bus crashed into it heavily. A few cars behind the school bus hit the bus as they could not stop in time and soon it became a pile-up. The car was damaged badly while the school bus also had some damage. And the already crowded road became more jammed with vehicles, which came to a mess. We wanted to help the victims. My sister drove to a stop at the roadside not too far from the accident spot.
The scene that greeted us was terrible. I first rushed to the car. The driver, a lady, lay trapped behind the wheel, unable to move. Three schoolchildren were in the back seat, their faces white with fear. Two of them were seriously hurt and bleeding from the head and hands. They were conscious although too weak and frightened to realize what had happened. We called an ambulance and while waiting, we tried as much as possible to help the victims. As a result of our joint efforts, the driver and the children were moved to safety and taken care of.

A 92-year-old hunter getting lost in the woods
Bill McDonnell was going hunting. Deer season had begun, but it was colder than usual. Up until his late 80s, Bill hadn’t minded hunting in sub-zero temperatures, but he had slowed in the past few years. The snow-dusted mountains of the Shenandoah Valley were no place for a 92-year-old. He knew it. But he had made up his mind to get outside. His wife, Joanna McDonnell, knew what he was up to. But this particular day, Joanna didn’t even try to talk sense into her husband.
The next morning, Bill woke up at four, grabbed his gun, and drove his Jeep toward Shenandoah Mountain, a place where he hadn’t hunted for a long time. At the end of the old Laurel Run logging road, he hit the trail on foot.
It was about 7:30 a.m. when the sun peeked (微微露出) through the trees. Bill had strict instructions from Joanna to be out of the woods by 2 p.m. and home by 3 p.m. — plenty of time before sunset, in case he missed the deadline, which he often did. Not long into the hike, he came upon a path he didn’t remember. Maybe this was a secret route. He took it.
Then, around 11 a.m., he emerged (出现) into a clearing along a valley. It seemed that his path up the mountain had meandered( 蜿蜒) quite a bit. When thoughts of short-cuts came to mind, Bill couldn’t help himself. “I’ll just be extra careful,” he reasoned, and began cutting his own path. Before long, the canyon (峡谷) narrowed to a dead end. The next thing he knew was that he was lost.
He pulled out his phone, only to find it had died. He dug into his pants for the GPS device he always brought in case of emergency and pushed the “on” button. Nothing. He had forgotten to charge it. He hadn’t brought a flashlight either. During this period, he could hear the sound of a helicopter flying over his head. He yelled and waved, but in vain. He couldn’t make himself heard.

This beach was known for its rip currents (激流). I trembled with fear. Nothing scared me as much as water.
Just the sight of the sea made me sick to my stomach.
I’d always loved water and been a good swimmer until last summer when I’d decided to climb up to the highest diving board at the pool. I’d jumped from that height and hit the water. I got out of breath and blacked out (昏厥). The next thing I knew my brother was pulling my body out of the pol. From then on I was absolutely terrified of water.
“Jason are you coming?” my friend Mat called.
“Yeah” I said, wondering if they might laugh at me if they knew about my fear.
Suddenly I heard shouting in French. A crowd of people were running into the sea. To my horror, I saw a little boy moving up and down in the waves! His head popped up then a wave crashed over him and he disappeared for a moment. Some rescuers fought against the tide (潮汐) but they are too far away. I had to intervene.
I evaluated the situation and realized the boy was close to the jetty and maybe I could help from there .I raced down the beach and it hit me: Water! My palms got sweaty and my stomach felt sick symptoms of my fear. I stopped immediately.
The people in the water weren’t making any progress. I was the only person who saw that going out on the jetty was the fastest way to reach the drowning (溺水的) boy. Yet in the middle of this emergency (情急情况) I was extremely terrified. I tried to remember the lifeguard training I’d had as a teenager. I forced myself to move forward.

On a misty morning in July, Clay and Acaimie arrived at the base of Mount Liamuiga, ready for their first honeymoon climb. They had married just five days earlier back home in Indiana, the United States.
They had their apparent differences. Acaimie had always been the worrier. Clay, on the other hand, was an optimist—always certain that things would turn out just fine. So it was Clay who wanted to take a day of their honeymoon and climb Mount Liamuiga, which is also a dead volcano—a popular destination for vacationers looking for adventure.
The couple, dressed in white T-shirts and sneakers, arrived for their journey in a rental car expecting to explore. When arriving, they found an empty dirt parking lot with just a small sign marking the beginning of the track. They made their way up anyway.
It took them nearly three hours to reach the peak, but the view made it all worthwhile. Though worn-out, they couldn't have been happier as they took a few selfies(自拍)with their cellphones, and walked around the edge of the volcano.
That's when Clay saw it: a small track, half-hidden beneath plant life, that led into the volcano's crater(火山口). A series of holes had been drilled into the rocks, with ropes that led down. For Clay, the sight was incredibly inviting. It felt like a secret entrance to a mysterious paradise(天堂,乐园). Acaimie was less enthusiastic. The track was steep, and she was afraid of heights, but she bravely followed Clay's lead. After just a few minutes of going downwards, though, she'd had enough. She told her husband she'd wait on the rocks just off the track while he went exploring. “Just be quick,” she said as she watched him set off on the rough path, zigzagging(曲折前进)while grasping the rope.

Rescue
Dawn came slowly. A shaft of sunlight reached into the 4-meter-deep crater(弹坑), making the metal of the bomb shine. The boys were numb and tight, and hungry. They tried not to look at the huge shape of the bomb that appeared over them.
Harry suddenly opened his eyes and seized Jack’s arm. “Listen!” he whispered. Jack’s eye widened instantly, and both boys strained their ears. They could hear a man talking softly. The voice seemed a long way off. Jack went to shout, but Harry clamped his hand over Jack’s mouth. “Don’t shout,” he hissed(发出嘘声), “We’ll be blown into pieces.”
The soft voice came nearer and nearer. Suddenly, an army captain appeared at the top of crater. He was talking to a mouthpiece(话筒) around his neck. He stopped talking when he saw the boys. “What the...” he said, “Who are you?” Harry found his voice, “Jack and Harry Brown.” “Is that dog dead?” asked the captain. “No, he’s sleeping,” said Harry.
The captain spoke into the mouthpiece again, “Sergeant(中士),” he said, stopped and took a breath before he went on. “There are two kids and a dog down here.” Then the captain crouched down and stared closely at the bomb. “Don’t move and don’t speak,” he said, “or we’ll all go up.” He began talking quietly to his sergeant.
Jack and Harry were too stiff to move. They held Raf, the dog, tightly and waited. Another man appeared at the top of the crater. “I thought so,” he said, “It’s them all right.”
“It’s Old Tin Hat!” whispered Jack. Old Tin Hat was carrying a ladder. He and the captain lowered the ladder into the loose earth next to the two boys. “Keep still,” the captain warned them. As the captain held on at the top, Old Tin Hat started to come down the ladder very slowly, very gently, step by step. At last, he reached the bottom, and with one movement, he lifted Jack on his back. Harry watched as Jack was carried up. It seemed to take an age.
