3 . The human brain has remained largely unchanged since it evolved. Long ago, humans had to focus on the task at hand. Yet today, our brains face a constant stream of digital information that, many scientists think, could have worrisome effects.
In October 2020, scientists published a study that supports the concern. The scientists studied media multitasking, which means people use multiple forms of digital or screen-based media at the same time. The study found that this type of multitasking may impair the ability to concentrate in young adults. This makes them unable to later recall specific situations or experiences.
For the study, scientists recruited 80 young adults aged 18 to 26. The participants were first presented with images of objects on a computer screen and asked to classify the pleasantness or the size of each one. After a 10-minute break, the subjects were then shown additional objects and asked whether the subjects were already classified or new.
During this process, the scientists measured participants’ brain activity and eye movement. This data let scientists track if the young adults were paying attention while being asked to remember the images. Then, the findings were compared to the results of a questionnaire the participants filled out before the study that asked questions about everyday attention, mind wandering and media multitasking.
The participants who reported more media multitasking had more absence of mind during the test. The pupils of their eyes were also smaller, which is a known marker of reduced attention. They also had reduced brain-signal patterns known to be associated with episodic memory—the recall of particular events.
Previous work had shown a connection between media multitasking and poorer episodic memory. The new findings offer clues as to why this might be the case.
“Individuals who are heavier media multitaskers may show worse memory because they have lower sustained attention ability,” says Kevin Madore, the paper’s lead author.
Madore says the new study stresses the need to be mindful of how we engage with media. “I think our data point to the importance of being consciously aware of attentiveness,” he says.

4 . People duck responsibility for reasons ranging from simple laziness or a fear of failure, through to a sense of feeling frightened by the scale of a problem or a situation. Whatever the reason, if people fail to take responsibility, they’ll fail in their jobs, they’ll fail their teams, and they’ll fail to grow as individuals. All of this makes it important to address the issue.
Signs of not being responsible
There are several signs to watch out for. These include:
Lacking interest in their work, and in the well-being of the team
Blaming others for mistakes and failures
Missing deadlines
Avoiding challenging tasks and projects, and not taking risks
Regularly complaining about unfair treatment by team leaders and members and engaging in self-pity
Avoiding being dependent on others for work, advice and instructions
Lacking trust in team members and leaders
Ways to encourage responsibility
Start by talking
Your first step is to talk to the individuals concerned. Are there circumstances that are contributing to the situation, or problems that you can deal with?
Communicate roles, responsibilities and objectives
Your people need to know clearly what their roles and responsibilities are. Ensure that you have an up-to-date job description for each team member, and be as detailed as possible about every responsibility that they have.
Re-engage people
Your people will be more engaged if their work is supported with their values. Talk to them to find out what they are. Then, illustrate how their daily tasks and responsibilities go with those values.
Give plenty of praise
Finally, be sure to give your people plenty of praise when they do take responsibility. And help them improve by providing them with regular, effective and fair feedback.

6 . What does your dog do if you lie down on the floor and put your arms or legs out straight to exercise? Does your dog come to your rescue in the same way as if you fell down, or realize you mean to do that? Researchers in Germany carried out a series of experiments to see whether dogs understand if humans do things on purpose.
For their study, they had 51 dog owners drop off their pets to the laboratory. First, the dogs learned that a human experimenter would feed them treats through a gap in a glass partition (隔断). And the researchers designed two situations, which were known as “unwillingness vs. inability”. In the “unwillingness” situation, the experimenter held the food in front of the dogs but didn’t give it to them on purpose, often teasing (戏弄) them before pulling it away. For the “inability” situation, they had two conditions, one where the person seemed clumsy (笨拙的) and he appeared as if he were trying to give the treat to the dogs, but it fell down. In the other, the gap was enveloped and the pet couldn’t get the treat.
In all of these experiments, the experimenter left the treat on the floor in front of the dogs, and the dogs were easily able to get to the treat. How quickly they got back the food depended on the specific situation. The researchers predicted correctly that the dogs would wait longer to go to get the treat if they thought the experimenter didn’t want them to have it, while they went to get it quickly when the treat was meant for them. “They probably understood that -This guy is not very skilled but he wants to give the food to me.” Bräuer suggests.
Bräuer says that there could be other factors that led to the dogs’ such performance in the experiments. Although she thinks the findings are important, Bräuer says she is looking forward to what other scientists around the world will say.

Best practices for keeping your pet healthy can vary by time of year, activity and destination. For example, hiking and back-country adventures can increase your pet’s exposure to ticks, while some regions may have a higher risk for heartworm. And even though your pet may currently be flea-free (无跳搔的),there’s no guarantee that other animals are as well.

“Everybody in the world should receive a standing ovation(鼓掌)at least once in their life.” Marv said to Scruff and Max. “People like you can’t get a standing ovation.” Scruff and Max rebuted(反驳)him. Marv ignored them and walked away, thinking, “I will show them that I can receive a standing ovation!”
Every year on the final school day, one child is awarded The Edward Yellow Award. This award is awarded to the school topper. Marv desperately wanted this award.
Marv didn’t have normal legs like others. He walked in a very unusual way. Everyone did not go close to Marv. He was home-schooled till 4th grade as his parents were a little nervous to send him to a regular school. So he started formal education from 5th grade. He really liked the teachers in his school. One of his favorite teachers was Mrs. Harsia, who teaches maths and he really liked this subject. Mrs. Harsia used to call him the “Math Wiz”. Though he was disabled, he had a sharp mind to do difficult mathematics calculations.
5th grade’s math’s final assessment was coming up and he was teamed up with Scruff, who had developed a liking for Marv due to Marv’s brilliant maths.
“Ha, you are with the fat guy!” Max teased(取笑)Scruff.
“Stop teasing him,” Scruff said, “How would you feel if somebody called you this name?”
Max silently walked away.
Scruff asked Marv to start to do their project. Marv thought many great ideas. “Ah, this looks so awesome Marv!” Scruff said, “You ‘really are a Math Wiz!” They soon became good friends.
One day, Marv heard someone scream on the campus. He ran towards the voice. A girl was crying, her knee bleeding. In no time, Marv took out his handkerchief and covered the girl’s knee to stop bleeding.
“What is your name?” Marv asked.
“Kate. I know you are Marv. My brother often mentions you.” the girl responded.

Tigger wandered the pet shop to find an extraordinary animal as his companion.
The shop owner enthusiastically presented various special pets to Tigger, but none caught his attention until he noticed a cage in the distance. “What’s in there?” he asked.
“That’s Marmalade, just a regular parrot.” the owner replied.
Curious, Tigger approached the cage. The big white bird cocked her head to one side and let out a little squawk (尖叫).
“Can she talk?” Tigger asked.
The pet shop owner nodded, “Sometimes. She will talk when she has something important to say.”
“That makes her unique,” said Tigger, “and she will be my pet.”
After the purchase, he lifted the cage off the counter and walked proudly out of the shop.
At home, Tigger placed Marmalade on his bedroom desk. He pushed his face up close to the cage and said, “Watch my lips, Marmalade. My name is Tigger. Now say hello Tigger!”
Marmalade hopped round the cage. She pecked at seeds lying on the floor. She tapped the hanging silver bell with her beak, but she did not say a word.
Despite her quietness, Tigger consistently shared his school day with Marmalade as soon as he came back.
One afternoon, Tigger returned home late. Marmalade acted quite strangely. She glared at the door, walking round and round the cage. She jumped up on the wires and banged the silver bell with her beak. Then she stopped and opened her beak as if she was going to talk. But before she could say a word, Tigger rushed into the room waving a yellow piece of paper.
“Look, Marmalade!”
He pushed the paper against the cage. “The school’s annual pet show is tomorrow. And guess what? I’ve entered you. Unlike other years, besides judges, our headmaster, Mr. White, will select a special winner. I believe you’ll enjoy it.” Yet, Marmalade remained silent.
The next morning, Tigger woke early. He cleaned out Marmalade’s cage, filled the dishes with water and seeds and polished the bell.
“You know, Marmalade,” he said happily, “I’m sure no one will have a pet like you, a talking bird. Marmalade will be the winner!”
