1 . Benefits of Reading

The benefits of reading start with the first book a baby hears and continue into childhood and throughout the child’s life. Here are some reasons why reading is important.

Reading teaches children about the world around them.     1    They are exposed to ways of life, ideas and beliefs about the world which may be different from those which surround them. This builds a store of background knowledge, which helps younger children learn to read confidently.

2    When we read, our brains translate the descriptions we read of people , places and things into pictures. When we are reading a story, we are also imagining how the characters are feeling. We use our own experiences to imagine how we would feel in the same situation

Children who read do better at school. And they don’t just do better at subjects like reading, English and history.     3

Reading is a great form of entertainment! A paperback book or an e-reader doesn’t take up much space so you can take it anywhere and you’ll never be lonely or bored if you have a book in your bag.     4

Reading relaxes the body and calms the mind.     5    The constant movement, flashing lights and noise are quite stressful for our brains. When we read in silence, the black print on a white page is much less stressful for our eyes and brains.

A.Reading improves concentration.
B.Reading develops a child’s imagination.
C.We seem to have forgotten how to relax and how to be silent.
D.Children learn new words and greatly enlarge their vocabulary.
E.They do better at all subjects and they do better all the day through school.
F.You can read while waiting for a friend or during a flight delay at an airport.
G.By reading, children learn about people, places and events outside their own experience.

2 . (2017·黄山模拟)What do you usually do to comfort your friends when they are feeling sad or depressed? You probably pat them on the back or shoulder,or maybe you give them a big, warm hug.

We used to think that knowing when and how to comfort others was an ability that only humans have. But scientists have discovered that apes(猩猩)have this ability, too, according to a study published in the Journal of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Two researchers from Emory University in Atlanta,US,went to an Ape Protection Centre in Congo to study bonobos(倭黑猩猩),which are closely related to humans.

The researchers analyzed the bonobos' reactions after more than 370 cases of stressful situations, such as fights and losing temper, and found that some bonobos rushed to hug those that were screaming after being attacked, just like humans would have done.

However, researchers noted that not all bonobos were capable of comforting others. In the protection centre, many bonobos are orphans whose mothers were killed by hunters. They were found to be more anxious in times of tension and have greater difficulty controlling their own emotions, making them worse at reaching out to help friends in need.

“Orphans, who have not had the benefit of a mother helping them handling their emotions, are much worse at comforting others,”Professor Frans de Waal, one of the researchers, told The Telegraph.“Bonobos with moms were able to curb their negative emotional reactions more quickly. Therefore, they pay more attention to others.”

This pattern mirrors the way that human children have been found to react. Those who seem more capable of handling their own emotions—for example, the ones who can calm themselves down more quickly after upsetting experiences—are usually better at expressing their concerns for others.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章介绍了一个很小就展现出色音乐天赋的小女孩Alma Deutscher,以及她的突出成就。

4 . At first sight, Alma Deutscher, a twelve-year-old girl from England appears to be like any other typical pre-teen. She loves to skip rope, read and play with her younger sister. But this modest youngster, who composed her first musical work at age six, first short opera at age seven, and first full-length opera based on Cinderella at age ten, is anything but average. Though her parents downplay her extraordinary talent, young Alma is being described as “little Mozart” by the music world

Alma's operatic take on the classic fairy tale, which she began writing at age eight, has a slight twist. Her Cinderella is a musician who meets her Prince Charming through a song. “In my Cinderella, she sings the beginning of a ballad — but at midnight she flees. Eventually, the prince finds her after asking all the maidens of the land to sing the end of the ballad.”

The opera was first performed in Vienna, Australia on December 29, 2016, where the then eleven-year-old skillfully switched between the piano and the violin and receives enthusiastic reviews. The young genius has since performed two new piano works, once in Australia and the other in China.

While this may appear to be a lot for someone so young, Alma is not worried. She says, “of course I have to work hard. But all children have to work hard for exams, and at least when I work hard, I work hard for something incredibly exciting, like seeing my whole opera put on stage.”

Alma's musical talent first came to light before she could even talk. Her parents recall that as an 18-month-old toddler, she was able to hum a pitch perfect version of the children’s rhyme

Twinkle Twinkle Little Star.

However, Alma’s abilities only gained international attention in 2012, after a family friend posted a video online comparing her to Mozart. The family was suddenly swamped with media requested and Alma became an overnight star, dubbed “little Mozart”. This nickname makes her parents unhappy because they believe it puts added pressure on the young girl. They would instead prefer her to be called “a composer and musician”.

Alma does not want to be compared to the famous artist either, saying, “There was only one Mozart, and I prefer to be little Alma.” Regardless of what she calls herself, the twelve-year-old is changing the world of music forever!

1. What do we know about Alma Deutscher?
A.She has shown great musical talent from a young age.
B.She comes from a famous musical family.
C.She regularly performs the classical music of Mozart.
D.She has adapted some famous works of classical music.
2. How did Alma get to be widely known?
A.By performing on television
B.Through an online video
C.By putting on an opera
D.Through her parents’ promotion
3. What is Alma’s attitude towards her success?
A.She is still unsatisfied with her performance.
B.She is modest about her musical achievements
C.She is uncomfortable with so much pressure.
D.She is proud to have become a professional musician.
4. What can we infer about Alma’s parents?
A.They are very well-educated people.
B.They have made a good life plan for Alma.
C.They have pushed Alma to take up music.
D.They are protective of their daughter.

5 . Whenever we talk about holidays, my mother teases my sister and me about how we “make out like robbers.” She is referring to the fact that we are half Jewish and half Indian, so we receive gifts on both the. festivals of lights. Hanukkah and Diwali. Though my mother teases us, I do not mind getting two sets of gifts!

Hanukkah is celebrated on the 25th day of the Jewish month. which is usually sometime in December. On Hanukkah, like most Jewish families. we light a menorah and say a prayer each night. We also say a special prayer on the first night. After that, it is a tradition for my sister and me to do ‘hot and cold’, for our hidden Hanukkah gifts. When we walk towards the gift, our parents say ‘hot’ and when we walk further away, they say ‘cold’. We each receive one present every night of Hanukkah. Another part I like about this holiday is seeing family members who we do not see often. My aunt usually stays for a few days, and we sometimes visit other relatives.

Diwali is celebrated on the 13th day of the dark fortnight of the month of Ashwin(October / November). To celebrate Diwali, my family does a pooja, or prayers, in honor of the goddess Lakshmi. Since she is the goddess of wealth and prosperity, the pooja includes washing silver coins in milk and water. In India, people decorate their houses with lamps, similar to the way you might light up your house for Christmas. My family just places a few candles outside We also set off firecrackers, which is my favorite part. We often do this activity with friends to add to the excitement.

Both holidays have different histories and stories We celebrate them in different ways, yet they both have the same meaning. They both translate into. Festival of Lights, and they both mean family and presents for me!

7 . The arm bones of women who lived 7,000 years ago show a surprising level of strength--even higher than today's professional athletes. That's according to a first-ever study comparing prehistoric(史前的) bones to those of living people. The finding suggests a revision of history- the everyday lives of prehistoric women were filled with hard labor, rather than just sitting at home doing lighter tasks while the men struggled and fought for life.

“Before the study, there are no clear records describing how our ancient ancestors lived. It can be easy to forget that bone is a living tissue, one that responds to the difficulties we put our bodies through,” said lead author Alison Macintosh. “Physical force and muscle activity both put pressure on the bone. The bone reacts by changing in shape, thickness and other aspects over time.”

Previous studies only compared female bones to contemporary male bones, the researchers said-and that's a problem, because the response of male bones to stress and change is much bigger than that of women. For instance, as humans moved from a hunter-gatherer lifestyle constantly on the move to a more settled agrarian(农耕的) one, changes can be observed in the structure of the shinbone(胫骨)- and these changes were much more evident in men.

However, a comparison of the bones of prehistoric women to the bones of living female athletes can help us work out a more accurate picture of what those prehistoric women were doing. "By analyzing the bones of living people and comparing them to the ancient bones, we can start to explain the kinds of labor our ancestors were reforming, Macintosh said. What they found was that women's leg strength hasn't changed a great deal, but their arms used to be very powerful. Prehistoric women, the researchers found, had arm strength 11-16 percent stronger than those of modern rowers(桨手), and 30 percent stronger than those of non-athletes.

1. What does the study tell about prehistoric women?
A.They were stronger than men.B.They had lighter bones than men.
C.They did tough tasks as the men.D.They spent most time staying at home.
2. What problem did previous studies on prehistoric bones have?
A.They lacked enough comparison.B.They only studied men' s bones.
C.They focused little on bones.D.They ignored the lifestyles.
3. What does the underlined word "that" in Paragraph 3 refer to?
A.Bones’ structure.B.Bones' thickness.
C.Bones’ response to stress.D.Bones’ stress from hard labor.
4. What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A.It's still hard to explain our ancestors' lifestyle.
B.Prehistoric women went through much suffering.
C.Women's arms have become much stronger over time.
D.Prehistoric women are stronger than contemporary females.

10 . When I was in my fourth year of teaching,I was also(and am still)a high school track and field coach(田径教练). One year,I had a student,John, who entered my class when he was a junior. John changed to our school from Greece, and seemed to be interested in sports,so I encouraged him to join our track team. I explained to him that even though he had never taken part in it before,I did believe that he could do well in any event, and that I would be willing to coach him in whichever ones interested him. He accepted the offer, and began to work hard at every practice.

About a month later,I had found out from other sources that John was a first-class tennis player, winning various junior awards in his home country. I went to him asking,“John,I really appreciate that you came out for the track team, but why didn’t you play tennis instead? It seems that would interest you a lot more, since you’re so good at it.”John answered,“Well,I like tennis, but you told me that you believed in me,and that you thought I could do well in track,so I wanted to try it for that reason.”

From then on,I often remember my student’s reply. I told it to a friend and she suggested I write it down to share somewhere with more teachers. No matter how critical(挑剔的)students can be of themselves,I’ve found that a simple“I trust that you can do it!”can go a long way!

A.John’s PE marks.
B.John’s self-confidence.
C.John’s interest in sports.

2. Why did John take part in the track team?
A.He had been an excellent runner.
B.He was encouraged by his teacher.
C.He liked running more than tennis.

4. Who is the passage mainly written for?
A.Teachers.B.Parents.
