2 . A 21-year-old female student has become the youngest woman ever to be elected as Mayor (市长) after first entering politics to campaign about food.
Labor Party (工党) member Rosie Corrigan was elected as Mayor of Selby, a market town in North Yorkshire, on Monday. The student’s election was unchallenged to the mayoralty, following a year serving as deputy mayor. Corrigan has just finished her second year studying politics at the University of Hull. A political activist since secondary school, lifelong Selby citizen Corrigan has always been ambitious. As a member of the UK Youth Parliament, she co-founded the Selby Youth council, and then went on to run for and win the local council election as a Labour candidate (候选人) aged just 18.
Corrigan plan to use her year in office to further encourage political awareness in the youth of Selby. By breaking a political record of being the youngest woman ever elected in UK history, Corrigan hopes this will break the misunderstanding of Selby being a sleepy town with old-fashioned views. “It’s an honor to be the Mayor of my lovely hometown,” Corrigan told a newspaper. “I plan on using the year to encourage children and young people to champion their communities.”
The politics student’s election has been supported whole heartedly by the politicians she has worked with throughout her early-developing career, including the backing of former deputy Prime Minister (副首相) John Prescott. Simon Darvill said in an interview, “I hope that the success of Rosie and others like her encourages more young people to get involved in politics and change where they live for the better.”

3 . Do you often listen to music at loud volumes (音量)?Over one billion (十亿) young people are at risk of hearing loss (失聪) because of listening to loud noise for long periods of time. Listening to music or watching a TV show at loud volumes is harmful to your hearing.
The United Nations has standards for safe listening. It is not safe to listen to sounds that are louder than 85 decibels (dB 分贝) for eight hours or 100 dB for 15 minutes. The sound of a busy road is about 85 dB and the sound of a rock concert can be about 100 dB.
Loud noise is harmful to the inner ears (内耳). Most of us are born with about 16,000 hair cells (听毛细胞) in our inner ears. However, listening to loud noise for a long time can make these cells work too hard and cause some of them to die. This is what causes hearing loss.
Some people might think that their music isn't all that loud. But this can depend on where you are. For example, if you are in a noisy place like the subway, you might turn up your music too loud without realizing it. Later, when you listen to it at the same volume in a quiet place, you might feel uncomfortable.
The World Health Organization said the “safe level" for most sounds is below 80 dB for up to 40 hours a week. A level of 80 dB is roughly equal to (大约相当于) the noise of a subway.

4 . A new device works like a solar panel, except that it doesn't harvest energy from the sun. It absorbs energy from the cold night sky.
A prototype(原型)of the device produced enough electricity at nigh to power a small light bulb. A bigger version might one day light rooms or charge phones. It also could power electronics in remote or low-resource areas that lack electricity.
The device makes use of the temperature difference between Earth and outer apace. It then uses that difference to create electricity. As long as one side of it is cooler than the other, the generator can produce electricity. The cooler side faces the sky and is attached to an aluminum plate. That plate is sealed beneath a transparent cover and surrounded with insulation(隔热材料)to keep out heat. The bottom of the generator is attached to an exposed aluminum plate. That plate is warmed by the local air. At night, the top plate can get a couple of degrees Celsius cooler than the bottom of the generator.
Researcher tested a 20-centimeler prototype one clear December night in Stanford, California. The generator produced up to about 25 milliwatts of power per square meter of device. That was enough power to light small light-emitting diode, or LED bulb. Further improvements might increase its production to at least 500 milliwatts per square meter. To do that, the system might need more insulation around the cool top plate.
The device also could help power remote weather stations or other environmental devices, says Aaswath Raman. He is a materials scientist who worked on the device at the University of Califomia, Los Angeles. This may be useful in polar regions that don’t see sunlight for months at a time, Raman says. “If you have some low-power load and you need to power it through three months of darkness, this might be a way.”
1. What can we know about the new device?A.It gains energy from the sun. | B.It’s been widely used in life. |

10 . Top Schools for ESL Teaching
English as a Second Language (ESL) and Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) programs prepare teachers to instruct students who do not learn English as their first language. Programs can lead to a certificate, an endorsement, a bachelors, or a graduate degree.
University of Hawaii at Manoa
The department of Second Language Studies at the University of Hawaii is a department that provides enough resources for finding out how people use and learn different languages.
The University of Hawaii has one of the oldest ESL departments in this field and offers a Bachelor of Arts degree in second language studies. The Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy degree programs in second language studies allow students to specialize in language teaching or second language acquisition.
