文章大意:这是一篇议论文。主要探讨了家长应该如何看待并处理孩子的撒谎问题。

2 . Most parents are worried the first time they catch their kids out in a lie. According to child and teen psychiatrist Gayani DeSilva, lying can actually be a sign of healthy development in young children. “Kids lie for many reasons, and much of it is normal,” DeSilva says. “People are not born with the knowledge of communicating with others and getting their needs met. They’ll experiment with different communication styles and techniques until they find the ones that work best for them. Lying is one of those techniques.”

As kids get older, they become more aware of how their actions affect others, and many will lie less frequently. In spite of this, parents still need to lead their kids to form a habit of not lying. According to DeSilva, when children lie, look at them directly and ask what they need. After they tell you, gently remind them that telling you directly will be more effective than lying.

It’s also a good idea to model the behavior you want to see in your kids. In other words, don’t lie to your children. This will set you and your children on a course of open communication and trust.

In some cases, lying is a sign of a deeper issue. A child who is neglected will lie more than a child who has attentive and responsive parents. He’s not sure whether he’s loved. He may lie to please others. The same goes for a child who has experienced something unpleasant. He may lie to try to hide his shame, avoid admitting his needs, or to control his surroundings to ensure his safety.

By paying attention to the reasons behind a lie, parents can figure out what need to be done. For example, while Jack might lie about completing his homework in order to play video games, he also might be trying to avoid negative feelings connected with school work, and this is just where parents should start, says therapist Gideon Javna.

1. What can be inferred about lying from DeSilva’s words?
A.It has certain benefits for the healthy growth of kids.
B.It shows the understanding between kids and parents.
C.It can be an effective means of communication for kids.
D.It is so common for kids that parents can completely ignore it.
2. How can parents get their children to tell the truth?
A.By pretending to trust them at first.
B.By encouraging them to admit their needs.
C.By telling them directly the harm of lying.
D.By punishing them for their lying in a safe way.
3. The author mentioned the two kids in Paragraph 4 to show _____________.
A.It’s common for children to lie
B.It’s important to be a generous parent
C.lying can damage family relationships
D.lying is a reflection of one’s mental trouble
4. What should Jack’s parents do according to Javna?
A.Ask him to avoid playing video games.
B.Turn his attention to other positive things.
C.Give him a second chance to finish homework.
D.Listen to and help solve his problem related to school work.

4 . Sam is autistic. Thus, dining out can be tricky. Though he loves to eat, he dislikes the loud noise during restaurant dining. So he has a solution: overpower all noise with a much louder noise of his own. Faced with a possibility of dining alone all the time, I decided to work on dining skills at a trendy new spot early one Tuesday night.

To my delight, we arrived at an empty restaurant. So far, so good. Everything went well until two older and elegantly-dressed women entered. They were seated two tables away from us. I felt a sense of impending doom.

The women began to chat, paying little notice to us. Sam happily took this as his cue(暗示) to start talking and drown them out. I leaned into Sam and asked for a quiet voice, but unfortunately Sam had left that voice at home.

I glanced at the neighboring table, knowing we wouldn’t go unnoticed much longer. I quickly used Plan B: eat quickly and leave. Sam, who normally inhales food, suddenly embraced the concept of leisurely dining and refused to rush — all while chattering away endlessly.

“SHUSH!” I said, a little annoyed. Sam responded by giggling loudly. “Be quiet!”

Now the two women were watching us. The older of the two women leaned over. “Here it comes!” I thought. She completely surprised me when she said, “Honey, stop shushing that boy. He has something important to say. I have friends that talk way more than he does, and they aren’t nearly as interesting.”

Then she asked Sam, “Now, boy, Don’t you listen to your mom. You talk as much as you want. I want to hear everything you have to say.” Turning to me, she added, “You have a delightful boy. Relax and enjoy your dinner—and don’t let him skip the chocolate cake. It’s unmissable.”

I will always remember those two lovely ladies. Their kindness meant the world to a stressed-out mom. Wherever they are, we’re sending them lots of love and hopes for chocolate cake.

1. What can we learn about the author and Sam from paragraph 1?
A.Few like to have dinner with them.B.Sam suffers physically and mentally.
C.The author has no idea how to dine out.D.Sam enjoys talking loudly when dining out.
2. How did the author feel about their being noticed by the two women?
A.Thrilled.B.Annoyed.C.Regretful.D.Embarrased.
3. What did one of the women suggest Sam do?
A.Express himself freely.B.Follow his mom’s order.
C.Listen to everything she said.D.Relax and enjoy the dinner.
4. What could be the most suitable title for the passage?
A.My Autistic Son.B.Chocolate Cake.
C.Two Helping hands.D.The Pleasure of Eating.

6 . The most popular time to travel in Southeast Asia is from November to April and no matter which region you choose, you are bound to have an amazing experience.

Kuala Lumpur

You’ll likely be flying into or leaving from Malaysia’s capital when you visit some of these destinations, but if not, try and spend some time in Kuala Lumpur. Head to the top of the Petronas Twin Towers and walk the bridge between them if you don’t mind significant heights! There is plenty more to see and do in the city, and it is a great place to explore. Be sure to enjoy as much of the fantastic food as you can, too.

Tropical Islands

There is definitely no shortage of tropical islands in Southeast Asia, so choose one of the many beaches and then relax. The crisp blue water is great for a swim, or you can just lay by the beach and work on your tan (棕褐色皮肤). Two recommendations are Rabbit Island in Cambodia and the Ko Tarutao National Park in Thailand.

Halong Bay

If you’re near Hanoi, then you’ll want to walk to Halong Bay. There is no better way to see how impressive Vietnam is than by sailing around the bay or islands. A handy tip is to spend a little bit of money to ensure you do this trip comfortably; there are cheaper tours that will lessen the experience, so splash out a little here.

Bangkok

Bangkok is an experience that everyone should have at least once. It’s also a great springboard to the rest of Southeast Asia. There are plenty of chances for you to argue about the prices, and for those who like to party, the nightlife is exciting.

1. What can you enjoy in Kuala Lumpur?
A.Attending party.B.Delicious food.C.Sailing around.D.Comfortable accommodation.
2. Which place appeals to people who like bargaining?
A.Kuala Lumpur.B.Tropical Islands.C.Halong Bay.D.Bangkok.
3. What do Tropical Islands and Halong Bay have in common?
A.They attract sunbathers.B.They provide cheap tours.
C.They have many islands.D.They are in the same country.

7 . Last weekend, I said goodbye to another dear old friend. We had 12 fine years together, but our relationship was becoming dysfunctional(不正常的). Unwanted emissions and serious health problems were the final straw, leaving me with no choice but to make a trip to the knacker’s(收废汽车者的)yard.

I am now car-free for the first time in 20 years, and it feels strange. When I gave up meat, I did so mainly for environmental reasons, and I didn’t miss it at all. I would like to say the same about my car, but I can’t. It was first and foremost a financial decision: keeping the old car on the road was getting too expensive.

But doing the right thing for the wrong reasons is still doing the right thing — I now have a chance to rethink how I move myself and my family around, and can try to find a more environmentally friendly means of transport.

Going car-free is, I think, a lifestyle change that many of us are going to make over the next few years, as car ownership becomes increasingly unnecessary, expensive and socially unacceptable. However, it is easier said than done. Now my car is gone. I still need to get around. But how? I already cycle to work and use public transport when appropriate. But there are some occasions when a car seems to be the only way.

I won’t buy one: I have joined a car-share program and will use taxis more often. I will hire a car if I need to drive a long distance. But then I am still travelling in fossil-fuelled cars(燃油汽车), like when I quit meat and ended up eating more cheese. I fear I may have swapped one environmental problem for another.

I am also afraid to think about the ultimate fate of my car. I have just offloaded more than a ton of metal, plastic, rubber, fabric, electronics, oil and petrol that will end up in a landfill. There are millions of similar vehicles in the UK alone that will have to go somewhere.

Maybe I am overthinking it. According to Charlie Wilson, a climate scientist at the UK’s Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research, getting rid of a private car is no doubt a positive step to reduce CO2 emissions.

He points to research by the OECD’s International Transport Forum. “They showed that moving from a private vehicle fleet(车队)to a shared vehicle fleet can greatly cut the number of vehicles you need to deliver the mobility that we need and want. If that vehicle fleet is electrified, you can also bring CO2 emissions close to zero.”

So in other words, just get rid of your car.

1. What do we know about the author’s car?
A.It was old.B.It was green.
C.It was his first car.D.It was a second-hand car.
2. What do the author’s giving up meat and saying goodbye to his car have in common?
A.He did both for the wrong reasons.B.He thinks both help him save money.
C.He considers both are right decisions.D.He did both out of concern for the environment.
3. What does the author fear?
A.He may have to spend more on travel.
B.His lifestyle might be changed completely.
C.He might get bored with public transportation.
D.His decision may fail to help the environment.
4. What does Charlie Wilson say?
A.It is wise to do away with old private cars.
B.It is very easy to deal with old private cars.
C.Electric cars are the solution to traffic problems.
D.The OECD plays a key role in promoting car-sharing.

文章大意:这是一篇应用文。文章主要介绍了三个可供游玩的海滩的情况。

9 . Golden sands and 300 days of sunshine each year mean Barcelona’s shoreline is filled with a heated atmosphere year-round. Here’s our guide to the city’s best beaches.

Bogatell

This beach used to be an industrial wasteland. Sand was imported from Egypt and a center of beach sports was born.

The easy access to two subway stops and the variety of activities make Bogatell a good option for vacationers looking for a more relaxed atmosphere than the packed beaches to the south. At the north end, the Nautica Base offers lessons for windsurfing, kitesurfing and sailing.

Mar Bella

With the cleanest sand and water area in the city, Mar Bella has been appointed as a blue-flag beach. It’s less obviously attached to the city, though still well served by public transport.

Mar Bella also exhibits (展示) another example of the city’s free attitude. On one end of the beach is a rope pyramid (金字塔) for kids and a small playground with a slide.

Sant Sebastia

Sant Sebastia is one of the oldest swimming areas in the city. Its quiet environment and convenience to the center of town draw an older crowd in the morning. By afternoon, the quite crowd gives way to a noisier gathering of younger people.

Llevant

Some special activities make the northernmost beach an ideal destination for a family to spend a full day. In the morning you could hit up the Bose Urba, an adventure park with bungee and rope bridges. A few blocks away, there’s the Museum Blau, a natural science museum where different species of dinosaurs are on show. And a sand-free swimming area called Banys Forum sits just to the north, with steps leading into the water.

1. Which of the following is an ideal place for a tourist to learn surfing lessons?
A.Banys Forum.B.The Bose Urba
C.Sant Sebastia.D.The Nautica Base.
2. What makes Mar Bella differ from the other beaches?
A.The relaxed atmosphere.B.Colorful beach activities.
C.Playing equipment for children.D.Convenient public transport.
3. What can a tourist do in Llevant?
A.Play beach sports.B.Watch a dinosaur display.
C.Swim in the oldest swimming area.D.Enjoy the cleanest beach in Barcelona.

10 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。续写的词数应为 150 左右。

My parents came to the US from India in the 1960s, along with other immigrants from India. Back then, there were few Indians anywhere around the US. My father came to Kansas, where he would get his Ph.D. Six months later, my mother came with the three of us kids — my sister, my brother, and me. We were just six, five and three years old then.

It was the very first winter when we were in Kansas. It was so cold, but we didn’t have heavy coats or warm clothes. We didn’t have a concept of how cold it really could be in the Midwest, and there was a new surprise every day. We didn’t have a car or anything like that, and my dad didn’t have a US driver’s license. But anyway, my father was studying for his Ph.D., and he would walk up and down a big hill to and from the campus on a regular basis.

Since I was three years old, I didn’t go to school, but my sister and brother were in school. My father had to walk down the big hill to take them to school every day and then walk back up the hill to go to university. After about three weeks of living like this, a woman called Valerie, whose son John was in the same class as my brother, started noticing them. On a very cold snowy morning, when they went to school as usual,Valerie passed by. She pulled up and said, “I see you on the way every day. Don’t you feel cold without coats?”My father responded,“We didn’t expect the weather would be so cold in Kansas.”Valerie said,“Maybe I can take your daughter and son to school. Would you like a ride?”

Paragraph 1:

Hearing that, my dad nodded with great joy.

_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Paragraph 2:

Later, Valerie and her family became so dear to my family.
