5 . The Complete Guide to Alberta’s Icefields Parkway

Introduction

The 144-mile Icefields Parkway, or Highway 93, is one of Canada’s most scenic road trip routes and is a must for visitors to Alberta. It is popular among visitors, and has a lot of viewpoints where you can see glaciers (冰川), waterfalls, lakes, rivers, forests, and valleys. The parkway starts in the town of Jasper, in Jasper National Park, and travels south to near Lake Louise, in Banff National Park. Some travellers will go to the parkway from the southern end, though. The Icefields Parkway is open throughout the year, but most travellers will prefer to drive it in the warmer months.

Stops to Make Along the Way

Athabasca Falls: The 75-foot waterfalls are not exceptionally high, but they roar with a large volume of water, making them some of the most impressive falls in the Canadian Rockies.

Sunwapta Falls: Fed by the Athabasca Glacier, the Sunwapta Falls are divided into the upper and lower sections. The upper falls are easily accessible, but you need to hike a short distance to get to the lower falls. The lower falls are definitely worth the walk if you want to escape (逃离) the crowds in the summer. Sunwapta Falls are about 34 miles from Jasper.

Where to Get Supplies

If you’re spreading this road trip over more than one day, stock up on snacks in Jasper or Lake Louis and fill up your tank there, too. There are no major towns between Jasper and Lake Louise. In the summer, there are a few places to eat and stay along the way, but prices tend to be high because of the lack of competition and the area’s remoteness.

Want to go there to have fun? Please contact us for more information.

文章大意:本文为说明文,文章讨论了一种叫做sherlock的机器以及其所使用的CRISPR 技术。

6 . Scientists near San Francisco work to identify a type of endangered fish using a tool that was originally made for treating cancer.

Currently, CRISPR is used to change the genetic material in specific cells. By changing the structure of immune cells, it helps recognize and fight cancer. The same technology is now used in a special machine called Sherlock, which, of course, is named after the famous investigator Sherlock Holmes. They do not, however, use Sherlock to change fish cells. Instead, the ocean researchers catch the fish, collect a small amount of mucus(粘液) and then test the cells to find the genetic makeup of the fish. It can be done in about 30 minutes. In the past, the researchers would have to wait weeks or months to get test results.

The researchers have found that the technology is extremely helpful when looking at different species of Chinook salmons, because they look nearly the same. However, some of them are endangered, and the scientists need to keep track of them.

In the past, the scientists would catch the Chinook salmon and measure them to tell them apart. “It’s not very accurate,” said Andrea Schreier, an associate professor at the University of California in Davis. Now she is working on the salmon. Schreier said when they catch the fish, the Sherlock machine can quickly tell them if they have one of the special salmons. It’s important because it allows the scientists to do things that will help the endangered salmon live longer. For example, they can catch them in lakes far away from the coast and take them by truck to the San Francisco Bay. In the past, the fish might have tried to make it to the Bay by swimming in rivers. However, due to climate change, the river water is sometimes too warm for the fish to make the trip safely.

Schreier said she feels good about the project because she likes being able to assist with conservation. “I really want to work to maintain our ecosystems and our native populations, given the pressures humans place on them through our different activities.”

1. Which of the following best describe the technology?
A.Efficient.B.Immature.C.Inaccurate.D.Economical.
2. What do the new technology and the traditional way have in common?
A.They test the fish’s mucus to tell them apart.
B.They are carried out by researchers in the lab.
C.They help researchers tell different salmons apart.
D.They aim at better protecting salmons in San Francisco.
3. What can be inferred about the Chinook salmons?
A.They will die out soon.
B.They are of the same size.
C.They are now well protected.
D.They are used to cool water.
4. What do we know about Andrea Schreier from the text?
A.She thinks humans are greatly pressured.
B.She can now spend less time on her work.
C.She is rather devoted to the conservation.
D.She thinks her work is of great importance.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。研究发现,失眠会导致情绪问题,而且还有可能影响人的行为方式。

8 . Scientists have done a lot of research on sleep. They’ve shown that sleeplessness can lead to both weight gain and poor performance in school. Might it also affect your moods (情绪) or your behavior? A team of scientists based in Shanghai, China decided to investigate.

To do that, they took advantage of data (数据) from what’s known as the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) Study. Begun in 2015, this study followed over 10, 000 U. S. kids into adulthood. All were 9 to 10 years old when they started taking part. ABCD researchers have been collecting records from parents on how much their kids sleep on a regular basis. The scientists also have been surveying whether a kid might have a habit of getting into fights or breaking rules. They even note whether students have difficulty focusing their attention.

Wei Cheng, a mathematician from China, teamed up with other researchers, making a detailed study of the ABCD data. Cheng’s group found out that kids who on average slept less than 7 hours a night were more likely to have behavior problems than kids who slept more. Kids who missed out on sleep also had more mood problems, including depression. Feeling sad or blue for longer than a week or two can be a sign of depression. Poor sleepers were also more likely to have stomach problems and headaches.

According to Kyla Wahlstrom, a professor at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, at night, your brain sorts information to link related facts but it takes the brain longer to organize negative (消极的) moods than positive ones. If you don’t get enough sleep, your brain might not have time to finish tidying up. If the brain runs out of time, you’re left with negative moods. That may explain why Cheng’s group found out not getting enough sleep was connected with mood problems, says Wahlstrom.

1. What does the underlined word “that” in Paragraph 2 refer to?
A.The data.B.The good performance.
C.The ABCD Study.D.The investigation.
2. How did Wei Cheng and his group conduct their study?
A.By analyzing the data collected by others.B.By observing the American kids’ behavior.
C.By gathering information on American kids.D.By recording the American kids’ sleeping time.
3. Why is Kyla Wahlstrom mentioned in the last paragraph?
A.To stress the importance of enough sleep.B.To encourage people to sleep more at night.
C.To introduce the danger of negative moods.D.To further explain the findings of Cheng’s group.
4. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Keeping Fit by Sleeping WellB.Making Yourself a Perfect Sleeper
C.Remove Bad Moods by Having a Good SleepD.Putting Yourself in a Positive State of Mind
