文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。本文主要介绍了什么是复合型职业,阐述了未来找工作需要拥有多种技能。

3 . Jobs that use both technical and creative thinking are among the fastest-growing and highest-paying ones, according to a new report from Burning Glass Technologies, a job market analytics (分析) company in Boston.

It studied millions of job postings to better understand the skills companies require. What they discovered was that many want workers with experience in such new abilities as big-data (数据) gathering and analytics, or design using digital technology.

Burning Glass came up with the term “hybrid jobs” to describe these kinds of positions, which require skills not normally found together. For example, these hybrid jobs might require people with skills in data science and advertising, or engineering and sales. “The jobs of the future don’t involve just one skill,” says Matt Sigelman, chief manager of Burning Glass.

The company expects general job growth of about 10% between 2018 and 2028, but the hybrid jobs by 21%. What’s more, hybrid jobs pay more than positions that call for a traditional set of skills. For example, a marketing manager mastering a database program gets paid 41% more than a traditional one, with an average yearly salary of $100, 000. Moreover, an engineer who improves her sales skills and becomes a consulting engineer for a software company can more than double her pay from $180, 000 to $400, 000.

While data shows that workers who fail to update their skills will be able to find fewer jobs, people in hybrid jobs are less likely to become out of date, with only 12% possibility of being replaced by machine, compared with 42% for general jobs, says Burning Glass. Hybrid jobs are mostly not beginner roles, so they mainly go to workers with years of experience and, most importantly, more training after leaving college. That means workers, bosses and educators will have to think about how to better prepare people for these roles.

1. Why did the company research into job advertisements?
A.To understand the growth of best paid workers.
B.To compare workers’ experience with new abilities.
C.To find out companies’ requirements about skills.
D.To tell the possible changes in future job market.
2. Which of the following jobs can be hybrid?
A.Data engineer.
B.Machine operator.
C.Marketing manager.
D.Medical consultant.
3. How much is a traditional marketing manager possibly paid every year?
A.$180, 000.B.$71, 000.C.$41, 000.D.$10, 000.
4. Which of the following is the best title for this passage?
A.How to Get Trained for Jobs
B.The Skills for “Hybrid” Jobs
C.Future Jobs Requiring “Hybrid” Skills
D.Tips on Finding Fastest-Growing Jobs

5 . 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

Alexander sang all the time. He simply liked singing and practiced it all the time. He sang in the shower, and he sang while he walked to school. Personally, Alexander believed his voice was imperfect. “There will be tryouts for boys’ choir this weekend in our school,” he heard Kevin announcing in class.

Everyone around school knew Kevin had a fantastic sing voice. More importantly, warm-hearted and helpful, Kevin was always generous to give someone a hand.

With the tryouts in mind and an initial surge of interest, he kept imagining himself as a member of the boys’ choir, his heart thudding (砰砰直跳). However, he would explode with anxiety when he thought of singing with others. After school, walking slowly, he debated (反复思考) whether to attend it, for fear of being a drag (拖累) on others. “It would be nice if I could solo (独唱)” he thought to himself. Just then, out of the room walked Kevin, whose eyes brimmed with smile. Kevin patted his shoulder and whispered, “Let’s sign up together.” Inspired, Alexander signed his name.

The next morning, Alexander came to the tryouts. Taking a deep breath, he walked into the building, and then noticed the other boys who were all practicing delightfully. Alexander was seated on the chair alone, looking at other competitors nervously and not knowing how to join them.

Later, the choir director walked in and declared:“The whole selection process includes the individual performance and the group singing” Immediately things started. When Alexander’s turn came, his voice filled the room, loud and clear. He felt satisfied when he was done. After a short pleasure, however, the fear of singing with others flickered across his mind, casting him a surge of gloom.

6 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

It was the middle of the day with the bright sun, blue sky, green grass, and a soft breeze (微风). It was a great day to play outside and the best day of my life because I got a new ball and a new bike as my sixth birthday presents, and I was visiting my cousin, Kristy, at her house.

“Here I go!” shouted David while kicking my new ball. David lived next door and was older than me. I thought he was a wild child, but he was actually very kind. The ball went flying as if it were going to space. “That was high!” Kristy said in surprise and we went after the ball. We all had a great time.

Later we had supper and the food my aunt made was good. While Kristy was helping do the dishes, David and I ran outside to play. We started taking turns riding my bike. David suggested that we ride it to the forest. And I agreed. David and I got on the bike and David started riding fast.

As we rode through the forest, I felt the wind brushing my face. It felt so great and free. Suddenly the bike hit a fallen branch and we went flying off the bike. Lying on the ground, I felt dizzy (眩晕的). I checked myself for injuries and saw some but they didn’t upset me.

“David!” I shouted out anxiously.

“Hey,” said a voice. I turned my head and it was David, who was standing behind me, holding my broken bike. At the sight of my disabled bike, I was so sad that I couldn’t hold back my tears. It took David some time to calm me down.

8 . Language as a System of Symbols (符号)

Of all systems of symbols, language is the most highly developed. It has been pointed out that human beings, by agreement, can make anything stand for anything. Human beings have agreed, in the course of centuries of mutual dependency, to let the various noises that they can produce with their lungs, throats, tongues, teeth, and lips systematically stand for certain happenings in their nervous systems. We call that system of agreements language.

There is no necessary connection between the symbol and that which it stands for. Just as social positions can be symbolized by feathers worn on the head, by gold on the watch chain, or by a thousand other things according to the culture we live in, so the fact of being hungry can be symbolized by a thousand different noises according to the culture we live in.

However obvious these facts may appear at first glance, they are actually not so obvious as they seem except when we take special pains to think about the subject. Symbols and the things they stand for are independent of each other, yet we all have a way of feeling as if, and sometimes acting as if, there were necessary connections. For example, there are people who feel that foreign languages are unreasonable by nature; foreigners have such funny names for things, and why can’t they call things by their right names? This feeling exhibits itself most strongly in those English and American tourists who seem to believe that they can make the natives of any country understand English if they shout loud enough. Like the little boy who is reported to have said, “Pigs are called pigs because they are such dirty animals, ” they feel that the symbol is inherently connected in some way with the things symbolized.

1. Language is a highly developed system of symbols because human beings ________.
A.have made use of language for centuries
B.use our nervous systems to support language
C.have made various noises stand for any events
D.can make anything stand for anything by agreement
2. In Paragraph 3 the underlined phrase “take special pains” probably means “________”.
A.try very hardB.take our time
C.are very unhappyD.feel especially painful
3. In Paragraph 3, the example of the little boy is used to show that ________.
A.adults often learn from their young
B.“pig” is a dirty word because pigs are dirty
C.words are not connected with the things they stand for
D.people sometimes have wrong ideas about how language works

9 . The history of microbiology begins with Dutch cloth maker named Antoni van Leeuwenhoek, a man of no formal scientific education. In the late 1600s. Leeuwenhoek, inspired by the magnifying lenses(放大镜)he used to examine cloth, built some of the first-microscopes. He developed technique to improve the quality of tiny, rounded lenses, some of which could magnify an object up to 270 times. After removing some plaque from between his teeth and examining it under a lens, Leeuwenhoek found tiny twisting creatures, which he called “animalcules”.

His observations, which he reported to the Royal Society of London, are among the first descriptions of microbes(微生物). Leeuwenhoek discovered an entire universe invisible to the human eye. He found different microbes in samples of pond water, rain water, and human blood. He gave the first description of red blood cells, observed plant tissue, examined muscle, and investigated the life cycle of insects.

Nearly two hundred years later, Leeuwenhock’s discovery of microbes helped French chemist and biologist Louis Pasteur to develop his “theory of disease”. This concept suggested that disease originates from tiny organisms attacking and weakening the body. Pasteur’s theory later helped doctors to fight infectious diseases including anthrax, diphtheria, polio, smallpox, tetanus, and typhoid. All these breakthroughs were the result of Leeuwenhoek’s original work. Leeuwenhoek did not foresee this legacy.

In a 1716 letter, he described his contribution to science this way: “My work, which I’ve done for a long time, was not pursued in order to gain the praise I now enjoy, but chiefly from a strong desire for knowledge, which I notice resides in me more than in most other men. And therefore; whenever I found out anything remarkable, I have thought it my duty to put down my discovery on paper, so that the scientific community might be informed thereof.”

1. Which of the following best describes Leeuwenhoek?
A.trained researcher with an interest in microbiology
B.A curious amateur who made pioneer studies of microbes
C.A talented scientist interested in finding a cure for disease
D.A bored cloth maker who accidentally made a major discovery
2. The underlined phrase “this legacy” in paragraph 3 refers to ________.
A.the discovery of microbes
B.Pasteur’s theory of disease
C.Leeuwenhoek’s contribution
D.the origin of the tiny organism
3. What does the quote from Leeuwenhock’s letter suggest?
A.He admitted that many of his discoveries happened by chance.
B.He considered his work to be central to later medical breakthroughs.
C.He was greatly concerned with improving people’s living conditions.
D.He believed the sharing of knowledge was a key to scientific progress
4. What is the correct order for the following events?

10 . What is a database? A database is a collection of data or information that is organized, stored, and accessed electronically.     1     There are three main well-defined aspects of any database:

It is relevant (相关的). When searching for information in the database, you should be able to get results relevant to you. There are several ways to search through a database, for example, using keywords, subject headings, terminology (术语),etc.     2

3     One of the main differences between the information you find on the internet and that in databases is that the information found in databases is often confirmed. Furthermore, the information in the database should have key identifiers such as the publication (发表)details, author’s name, and a summary that you can use to confirm the information.

It is accessible. First of all, access to the library is either free or bought by supporters so that you can access the information within it at no price.     4     Secondly, the database should provide the full-text of the articles, meaning you will not need to go to the library or the source to do so.

5     It is an academic search engine. It doesn’t always have the articles' full texts, and you may have to go to their libraries and find or pay for them. Also, the search engine collects seemingly academic information from the internet and some of this information isn't always confirmed.

A.It is reliable.
B.It is reasonable.
C.You may have to pay a small amount of money as an independent researcher.
D.Google Scholar isn't a database using the above three aspects as a determining factor.
E.It is organized so that searching and finding this information is easy and rapid.
F.They are all relevant factors to be referred to when searching educational databases.
G.So you can limit your search results to a certain source type or date, or you can search by author or title.
