The pressure for change is building: reactions to the Glasgow climate pact

The Glasgow climate package, aimed at ensuring the world limits global heating to 1.5C above pre-industrial levels, was     1     even by the UK hosts as“imperfect", and leaves much of the hard work on cutting greenhouse gas emissions for next year. Boris Johnson, the UK prime minister, said:“We asked nations to come together for our planet at Cop 26, and they have answered that     2     . I want to thank the leaders, negotiators and campaigners who made this pact (协议、契约)happen and the people of Glasgow who welcomed them with open arms."

"There is still a huge amount more to do in the coming years. But today's agreement is a big step forward and, critically, we have the first ever international agreement to phase down (逐步减少)coal and a     3     to limit global warming to 1.5C. I hope that we will look back on Cop 26 in Glasgow as the beginning of the end of climate change, and I will continue to work     4     towards that goal."

Al Gore, the former US vice-president,also praised the public pressure put on world leaders at the conference: “The Glasgow Climate Pact and the pledges made at Cop26 move the global community forward in our urgent work to address the climate crisis and limit global temperature rise to 1.5C, but we know this progress, while meaningful,is not enough. “We must move faster to deliver a     5     transition away from fossil fuels and toward a cleaner and more equitable future for our planet. The progress achieved in the lead-up and at Cop26 was only possible because of the power of people young and old using their voices to demand action."

Many developed and developing countries nailed the progress it represented on the world's goals .But green campaigners warned that the     6     of the climate crisis meant the world was running out of time. Frans Timmermans, executive vice-president of the European Commission,     7     up many countries' reactions, saying:“'It doesn't stop here,it only starts."

On the last-minute weakening of language about phasing out coal, Timmermans said: "Let's be clear, I'd rather not have the change. I was very happy with the language we had." But he added it was “like going from 24 carat gold to 18 carat, it's still gold...we are now making     8     steps to eliminate coal ...and that countries that are so dependent on coal are willing to be part of that agreement is astonishing".

Countries will have to return next year and the year after to     9     their targets on cutting greenhouse gas emissions. Laurence Tubiana, one of the architects of the 2015 Paris deal and now CEO of the European Climate Foundation, said the outcome showed that the 2015 Paris climate agreement was working as     10    .

2 . 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

It was the night before Christmas and Rob was lying in bed, thinking about the next day. His family was poor, living entirely on the farm they ran, and most of the excitement of Christmas was in the turkey they had raised themselves and pumpkin pies his mother made. He rolled over to look at his old watch—it was two o'clock. Three hours later, his father would call him to get up, even if it was Christmas.

His father never talked about loving him—he had no time for such things. There was always so much to do on the farm. “Or, maybe, he just doesn’t love me,” Rob thought. He had a reason to think so. At 5 o'clock every morning, his father would call him to get up and help with the farm work. He had to go to the barn (畜棚) to hold the milking pails (挤奶桶) steadily when his father was milking the cows. He had to help put the tools in place and do the cleaning after the milking. He hated it that he had to do all these things at so early time.

He was not the only one awake at this night. He heard his parents whispering in the next room. “Mary, I hate to call Rob in the mornings. He’s growing so fast and he needs his sleep. If you could see how he sleeps when I go in to wake him up! I wish I could manage alone.”

“Well, you can’t, Adam.” His mother’s voice was gentle, “Besides, he isn’t a child anymore. It’s time he took his turn.”

“Yes,” his father said slowly. “But I do hate to wake him.”

When he heard these words, something in him spoke: his father loved him! He had never thought of that before, taking for granted the tie of their blood. Now that he knew his father loved him, he had to do something different on this Christmas. He did save and buy them each something every year, but he wished he had a better present for his father instead of the usual tie from the ten-cent store.

3 . 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

After 20 years as a full-time wife and mother, I decided to be a school bus driver for I loved kids. When I think about my years of bus driving, many things crowd in, but mostly, I remember Charlie.

Charlie, eight years old, with blond hair and crystalline gray eyes, began riding my bus in September of my fourth year driving. They all had stories to tell me about their summers. Charlie, though, ignored me. He didn’t even answer when I asked his name.

From that day on, Charlie was a trial. If a fight broke out, I didn’t have to turn my head to know who had started it. If a girl was crying, chances were Charlie had pulled her hair. No matter how I spoke to him, gently or firmly, he wouldn’t say a word. He’d just stare at me with those big gray eyes of his.

I later found out Charlie’s father was dead and he didn’t live with his mother. He deserves my patience, I thought. To my cheery “Good Morning”, he was silent. When I wished him a happy Halloween, he sneered (冷笑). Still I was sure that this child needed to feel some warmth from me. So, when he’d pass by, I’d pat him on the arm or sometimes gave him a hug.

Toward the end of that year, the kids on my bus gave me a small trophy inscribed (刻) “To the Best Bus Driver Ever”. I propped it up on the dashboard (仪表盘). On top I hung a small tin heart that a little girl had given me. In red paint she had written, “I love Polly and Polly loves me.”

The next day, I was delayed a few minutes talking to the principal. When I got on the bus I realized that the tin heart was gone. “Does anyone know what happened to the little heart that was up here?” I asked. For once with 39 children, there was silence.

One boy piped up, “Charlie was the first one on the bus. I bet he took it.” Other children joined the chorus, “Yeah! Charlie did it! Search him!”

I asked Charlie to come forward, stuck my hand into his pocket and immediately I felt it—the small tin heart. Charlie stared at me and seemed to be waiting for what he’d come to expect from the world. I was about to pull out the tin heart when I stopped myself. Let him keep it, a voice seemed to whisper.

“It must have fallen off before I got here,” I said to the kids. “I’ll probably find it back at the depot.” Without a word, Charlie returned to his seat. When he got off at his stop, he didn’t glance at me as usual.

That summer Charlie moved away.

Cold wind swept through the weathered coats of five-year-old Rebecca and her mother as they searched their small yard for the source of a faint quack (鸭叫). “Over here, mommy,” Rebecca pointed under a bush.

The source of this noise was a small skinny brown wild duck that was limping (跛行) around on only one good foot. They got down on their knees in the freezing cold, and cornered the duck against an old wooden fence. Rebecca’s mom gently grabbed the helpless duck. It put up little resistance since it was tired and hungry.

They took it inside the small wooden house. Rebecca’s mom looked closer at the homeless creature. One of its legs was injured. It was in pretty bad shape. “ Maybe we should take it to the animal clinic.” Rebecca said.

“But Rebecca, the clinic is probably closed now, being it’s Christmas Eve.” And in the back of her mind, she thought to herself, “I don’t know if we can afford an expensive bill right now.”

But looking at the poor little duck that seemed like it was near the end of its rope, Rebecca’s mom decided to try their luck. They wrapped the weak duck in an old worn towel. Its neck extended out and down from the towel. They walked out into the icy cold evening, with the sun just setting below the horizon. As they walked down the street, the duck made a faint “quaaaack” in desperation. The evening grew darker and colder by the moment.

After a couple of blocks, they noticed a white sign up ahead with black letters ‘Animal Clinic’. But their hopes were dashed (破灭) as they stared at a darkened storefront and a ‘Closed’ sign.

“What do we do now?” she thought to herself, both cold and tired.

Laurie sat quietly in the empty dressing room at the ice-skating rink(溜冰场). She had not been skating in any competition since her left knee was badly injured in an accident six months ago. As she waited for her turn to skate. Laurie was very nervous. “If I can win today.” she thought, “I can skate in the World Cup next year and then maybe I can make it to the Olympics.”

Laurie was told that she had a tough competitor this year, a girl named Jinny Jordan who was really strong in everything. “She is the one you have to beat this year,” said the coach.

Minutes later, the door swung open and Laurie saw a young woman who was about her own age. The young woman dropped her skating bag onto a chair. The bag fell to the floor with a thud(砰地一声), “Hi. I’m Jinny Jordan,” she said.

Laurie felt uncomfortable as she looked at Jinny. “So this is my competitor,” thought Laurie, “Because of her. I may lose tonight.”

“This costume was my mom’s idea,” Jinny said, looking down at her red, white, and blue skating dress. “It looks like a flag.”

Laurie couldn’t keep from smiling. She pointed to Jinny’s bag, “Some stuff fell out of your bag.” Jinny looked down. As she began to gather her belongings, the door opened.

“Jinny.” called someone, “You’d better give the music tape to the sound engineer right away.”

“Oh, my God! I thought I had handed it hours ago. It’s a green box with my initials(姓名首字母)written on it,” screamed Jinny, hurrying out.

Laurie knew that music was nearly as important to the program as the skating itself. If she lost her music tape, she might as well forget about skating. Laurie stood up and walked to the chair to do a few more knee bends.

6 . A Mountain But not a Volcano

On September 20th the Bank of International Settlements (BIS), the central banks' central bank, released data showing that corporate borrowing around the world remains at an all time high. A notable ______ is in China, where there is even more business borrowing as a share of GDP than in Japan at the peak of its bubble-related borrowing fever in the 1990s. But it is high everywhere. Corporate ______ in the rich world stood at 102% of GDP at the end of March, compared with 92% before the outbreak of the covid-19 pandemic. Could high levels of debt ______ the recovery in advanced economies?

Many regulators were sounding the ______ about elevated company debt even before the covid19 pandemic. Since then, the hit to firm's incomes has led to a wave of rating downgrades: between March 2020 and March 2021, Fitch, a ratings agency, ______ 460 firms, or almost 20% of its corporate portfolio. While defanlts (违约) have eased this year as economies have recovered, many firms will be ______ by higher levels of debt for years to come. Even if interest rates remain ______, this "debt overhand" could affect their willingness to invest or to hire new staff.

Intriguingly, however, aftereffects from corporate debt booms rarely cause significant economic damage, even if ______ themselves suffer when firms default. A recent paper by Moritz Schularick, of the University of Bonn, and several co-authors, examines data on business cycles for 17 advanced countries over more than a century, and compares corporate debt bursts with those associated with ______ borrowing (like the 200809 financial crisis).

The authors argue that lenders often have a/an ______ to restructure old corporate loans, reducing the risk of "zombie" companies persisting, and freeing up finance to support the next recovery. For household debt, however, restructuring thousands of ______ loans is often impossible, and lenders may be more inclined to keep the loans on their books in the hope that house prices eventually ______. The risks to the economy are higher after commercial property bursts than for corporate debt where lenders mainly have their eyes on firm's cash flows. This is one reason why the property-related debt depression in China are potentially disturbing.

In much of the rich world, there are reasons to be ______ optimistic. The largest lenders are in much better health than in 2008. All of the major ______ authorities, carried out stress tests during 2020, using macroeconomic scenarios much more severe than have actually came out, but their banking systems were able to absorb large corporate losses and carry on lending. And the parts of the economy that have had the toughest time during the pandemic only account for a relatively small share of corporate debt. For example, the BIS projects that ______ will increase in the hospitality industry (酒店餐饮业) over the coming years, but they note that the sector only accounts for between 1.5% and 8% of corporate credit in the nine major economies they model.

There will be a mountain of corporate debt in many countries for some time. But that dos not mean the recovery will necessarily falter (衰退).

7 . What is volunteer travel?

Volunteer travel involves taking a trip where all or part of the purpose of the trip is to participate in an arranged service opportunity helping others. Typically, the volunteer activity takes place in a foreign country, but some opportunities can involve national or regional projects.     1

Charitable interests often go far beyond national boundaries. People in developed countries become interested in the struggles of people in less developed countries.     2     Volunteer travel is a way to combine a visit to a new location with meaningful work that has a direct impact on communities in other parts of the world.

3     Historically, church groups made up a large part of this market. Once a year a religious organization or church would organize a trip to another country.     4     For example, it would be to help build a school in an impoverished(贫困的)area, or dig wells so a village would have clean water, or engage in hundreds of other projects that would impact those less fortunate. As international travel became easier and the Internet made communication between countries much easier, the interest in volunteer travel increased.

5     Volunteering in other countries has become as accessible as browsing a website and signing up. Instead of traveling with a group that is organized at the volunteers home base, the volunteer may join a group that gathers at the worksite from all over the world. This sort of volunteer travel is sometimes referred to as voluntourism or vacanteerism.

A.The primary purpose of the trip was very specific.
B.This type of travel has been an option for many years.
C.Educational institutions also made volunteer travel an option.
D.Sometimes, donating money is not enough to satisfy the need to help.
E.The Internet has helped make community service in general more popular.
F.These trips are usually arranged by church organizations, human interest groups or non-profits.
G.A new trend is that for-profit tour operators arrange group travel around volunteer opportunities.

The Animal School

Adapted from a work by George H. Reavis

Once upon a time, the animals decided to organize a school.

They adopted a curriculum consisting of running, climbing, swimming and flying. To make it easier to administer(管理), all the animals took all the subjects.

The duck was excellent in swimming, but he made only passing grades in flying and was very poor in running. So, he had to stay after school and also drop swimming in order to practice running. This was kept up until his webbed feet were badly hurt and he was only average in swimming.

The squirrel was excellent in climbing until he developed disappointment in the flying class where his teacher made him start from the ground up instead of from the treetop down. He also got a D in running.

The eagle was a problem child. In the climbing class he beat all the others to the top of the tree, but insisted on using his own way to get there…

9 . 阅读下面短文,根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要。

Some people are naturally outgoing, but other people have to practice to become outgoing. If you want to become outgoing, there are several strategies(策略)that you can use. Being “outgoing” involves learning how to present yourself to others, starting conversations, and being more confident in yourself.

One of the easiest ways to present yourself is to ask your friends, colleagues, or classmates to introduce you to their friends. For example, if you walk into a room and your friend is talking to someone else, make it a point to say hello and introduce yourself. The next time you see that person, you can say hello and, since you have already been introduced, you have built a bridge into future communication.

When you’re in a social situation, such as at a party, try to make eye contact with the other people there with a friendly smile. If the other person responds or smiles back at you, then go over to them and introduce yourself. That is usually a good sign for a possible conversation. If the person does not respond, let them go their way. There’s a difference between being “outgoing” and “pushy”. Another practical way to start a conversation with others is to use compliments(赞美). When you’re attracted by certain people, you're bound to notice little things that you appreciate. You can acknowledge these things with a sincere compliment.

Doing something that makes you feel a little uncomfortable is a good way to promote your confidence and help you become a more outgoing version of yourself. If you have never danced before but want to take a ballet lesson, try it out. Do your best to fight the inner voice telling that you can’t do something or defining(定义)yourself by what you think you should be doing instead. With each little victory, you’ll gain the confidence to step further and further outside your comfort zone.
