“I'm going to school today!” announced my little brother, Trevor, jumping to the breakfast table. He was already wearing his backpack, which had been washed by himself carefully, just for this great day.

Mom looked at me “Isn’t it great, Annie? You’ll both be at the same school!”

Actually, it was not great at all. School used to feel like my thing. Now Trevor was going to be in my old classroom, with my old teacher. At least, second grade was in a different part of the building. I felt a burst of mixture of excitement and displeasure. I knew that Trevor’s expectation and excitement were more than mine.

“Can I play with you?” he asked as Mom dropped us off when we arrived at the school. I shook my head, “School rules, remember? You have to play in the kindergarten area. I stay on the big playground.” Trevor gave me no reply but a determined look.

I led him to his classroom, watching him explore and locate his own seat. “Hi, Mrs. Morena,” I said as I pulled my brother forward. “This is my brother Trevor.” “Hello, Trevor!” Mrs. Morena smiled. “Want to meet the other kids?” Trevor nodded and let go of my hand. Then, I ran out of the door in a flash. I didn’t know where he was now. Nor did I care.

When the bell rang, the teacher gave me a seat by an open window, where I could see the kindergarten room if I looked outside. I faced forward. The teacher had begun the lecture. It was what the teacher was talking that attracted me the most. And I told myself again and again that all went on as before, as usual, as if Trevor had not been to school.

Between classes, I had forgotten all about Trevor. It was great to be back at school! I was running to the slide (滑梯) when a loud cry rang out across the playground.

2 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

When my parents told me we’d be moving, I didn’t know what to think. I meant of course I’d hate to say goodbye to my friends, but recently we’ve been growing distant. A part of me said this could be a good thing, while the other was completely terrible. I’ve lived here in Savannah Georgia my entire life, how was I going to make it in Maine? I’d tried to stop thinking about ,everything, but I couldn’t. Classic Amber, the overthinker.

“Amber! Caleb! It’s time to go.” My mom called my brother and I.

“Coming.” I shouted back.

I took one last look at my room before leaving. It made me sad to see it so bare and tiring life. All of my photography and awards were taken down. By the time I left my room, Caleb was coming out as well. I knew this move would be a lot harder for my elder brother. He was the quarterback (前卫) for the football team and had a lot of friends. I looked over at him to see how he was doing. He’s grown tall and strong recently. He towers over me now. I was about to say something to him, but I noticed his Airpods (无线耳机). Ever since mom and dad said we were moving he’s been never coming out of his room and when he did, he was always wearing his headphones or Airpods. This move would be a whole lot better if I had him help me. The worst thing about all of this was watching what it was doing to him.

As we stepped outside, I held my camera and took a picture of the house. I could almost hear the eye rolls from my family. Maybe it didn’t matter to them, but I didn’t want my childhood to disappear. I jumped into the backseat of our car and pulled out my phone.

3 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

My family moved in a small house in Brighton, Colorado on my seventh birthday. My first memory is our neighbor Bill, an old man, handing me strawberries from his garden through a hole in the chain-link fence. “We need to make the hole bigger,” he said jokingly. Later I knew that he lived alone.

Bill spent much time working in the garden, and I was always talking to him from our yard. I was a chatterbox. I think what drew me to Bill is that he never got tired of listening to me. I also think Bill saw a lot of himself in me — we were both lonely and anxious — and that may be why he always took the time to listen to me. It was a wonderful connection.

There weren’t any kids of my age in the neighborhood, and my parents were very busy, so I mostly played in the yard with my dog. I had a lot of imaginary friends — a whole family, actually, with a wife, children, a best friend... no joke. Weird kid.

One day, my parents asked Bill whether he’d watch me while they were away on business. This worked for everyone, so it became a somewhat monthly occurrence. Bill had a spare room in his house, which became “my” room.

Bill promised to teach me to drive the lawn tractor(割草机) someday and I was always looking forward to it. In winter, Bill would attach a snowplow(铲雪机) to the front of the dawn tractor. I seriously told him that I would invent a better snowplow when I grew up. “Sure you will. You’ll get a patent certificate. It takes a certificate to prove an important thing,” Bill said with a smile.

One snowy morning, an idea suddenly hit me. My parents were watching TV when I spit it out, “What if I adopted Bill as my grandpa?” My parents said I could go over and ask him.

Sticking to a Dream

Last fall I sent 200 letters to businesses, doctors and friends asking for sponsorship (赞助) so I could attend the National Youth Leadership Forum (论坛) on Medicine. “I don’t think anyone is going to send you money, Jessica, people just aren’t that kind,” said my mother. I was shocked by such a comment. “But you’re wrong. People are kind, and they will be generous enough to send me money,” I argued.

Everyone doubted my efforts and I heard every excuse why people would be too busy to help me. “These people don’t even know you. Do you honestly think a stranger will send you money?” asked my friends. “Why put yourself through all this disappointment. Just forget it,” said my grandfather. I decided not to listen. The best thing I could do was attend the Forum and learn more about my future career.

I waited a few days for my first response, which came from a bank. “Dear Jessica,” it read. “At this time our bank does not offer aid to students, but we wish you luck and success in your project.” My heart sank. I was rejected. It’s only one rejection, I thought. Cheer up. You will receive a letter with a check for some money in it.

I rushed home from school every day the next two weeks. As soon as I was in the door, I yelled, “Any mail for me?” I usually heard, “No mail, Jessica.” With the deadline approaching, I still received no money. I was getting a little worried.

5 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

I had never noticed her. She was not the kind of girl who could draw attention. She was not tall and just plain. In class, she liked sitting at the back, reading or taking notes. It was once I asked her to read aloud the text that I looked at her with new eyes when I heard her standard American pronunciation. Later on, the National College English Speech Contest would be held. I thought it over and filled in her name with a smile. I red-penciled her draft of speech, corrected her pronunciation, and even adjusted her body language.

However, I was always kind of worried because she was too introvert(内向的)and too quiet. Could she seize this rare opportunity?

On the night of the contest, I told her to take it easy. Blushed(脸红的), she looked at me and said nothing.

My heart sank. It seemed that she did tense up. I pated her and let her go to draw lots(抽签). As a result, what she drew was No. 9 while No. 8 was recognized English master-hand(高手).

Sure enough, the English master-hand was fairly successful in the speech with his humor and highly personal style. The whole audience would make a warm applause almost every 30 seconds until she appeared on the stage, still talking over his speech with excitement.

My palms began to sweat. I sat there, with no courage to look at her. It was the first time that she went up the stage, so I couldn't blame her for any slips. But at that moment, I found I was so scared of her failure.

The strong spotlight made her so small and so insignificant that nobody seemed to notice she had been on the stage, I said to myself, no hope.

But the moment that shocked me occurred. I clearly heard a voice, a very loud voice, “Now, please focus on me.” She said this sentence three times in all, louder and louder.

2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

The whole audience fell silent.

6 . 阅读下面的材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

I had a dream from primary school: to work in television. My parents owned a little grocery store, so we were definitely not fancy people. Thankfully, my dad had raised me to have a lot of confidence. He often said, “You can do anything you want to do.” My dad was particularly supportive. He was my steady rock — always there for me.

With his help and encouragement, I was admitted to the radio and television arts program at Ryerson in Toronto. I really loved the program and worked hard and I was named the most outstanding graduate. I felt like I was already living my dream. I began to think that maybe I could apply for an internship in CBC or CTV.

Luckily, Global Television had just started broadcasting in Canada that year. I thought to myself: I’m new and they're new, so if Fm going to get to know one person at Global, it might as well be the president. I was scared, but I knew deep down inside that this was what I wanted. When I called my dad and told him my plan, he said, “Good, Faye. That’s exactly what you should do.”

With my heart just about pounding out of my body, I called up the president of Global Television. Suddenly Mr. Slaight was on the phone. “I’ve heard that your studio facilities are amazing. I could come at eleven o’clock on Monday or eleven o’clock on Sunday for a tour. What would suit you better?” I caught him totally off guard. He stuttered a bit, and then picked a day. When I hung up, I was scared but excited.

I arrived at the studio on the appointed day. When Mr. Slaight took me around, he looked at me and said, “What do you want?” He sounded furious but curious. “All I want is a chance to audition. I just want you to know my face. That’s all I’m asking.”

I didn’t know whether I’d ever hear from him again, but two weeks later, his secretary called, “Mr. Slaight wants to know if you’d like to come and audition for a new school life show.” I immediately answered,“Sure!”

It was a bright spring afternoon along the coast, and Jonathan Bauer, 51 and his 13-year-old daughter, Ava, were taking full advantage of it. They were driving with the windows down as they headed home on the 1.4-mile, two-lane Route 90 bridge, which crosses the shallow waters of the bay. Suddenly, the calm was disturbed by the loud noise of tires.

Not far ahead of them, a black pickup truck was skidding (打滑) from one lane to the other. To Bauer’s horror, it crashed into a concrete barrier, spun like a top, flipped over the SUV directly ahead of them, and came to rest hanging over the railing of the bridge. Bauer hit the brakes in time to avoid the vehicles in his path, but a BMW car that had hit into the guardrail on the right, came sliding backward towards him. He turned left, but too late — the BMW struck his car’s fender (保险杠) before crashing into the vehicle behind him.

Bauer stopped the car. “Ava, are you OK?” he asked. She was shaken, but otherwise unhurt.

He ran to the BMW. “Are you OK?” he asked the driver. She nodded, too shocked to speak.

And then a shout. It came from the pickup truck, which had come to rest on its right side. The back passenger compartment (车厢隔间) and truck bed were hung out past the guardrail, 30 or more feet above the waters of the bay. The driver’s door was open and a man climbed out. He dropped to the ground, then storming to the railing. Bauer ran up beside him. The man pointed down. In the water was a car seat. Next to it, a girl, about two years old, was terrified, floating on her back, and screaming.

From around the truck, its other passengers who had gotten clear of the compartment were looking down into the water.

Matters quickly went from bad to frightening when the girl rolled over onto her stomach. Bauer waited for the pickup truck driver to do something, but he didn’t. Maybe he was in shock.

Every girl dreamed when she was young and Cindy was no exception. Her favorite ballet was Swan and Lake and she had read dozens of books from the library or in the bookstore on how to become a ballerina. She anxiously hoped that one day her dream would come true. She had taken ballet lessons and all her teachers confirmed that she was a good student and full of potential, which made her look forward to the future.

One day she saw an advertisement that a famous ballerina troupe (剧团) would be performing in her hometown. Her thoughts ran wild, “I must meet up with the leader of the troupe and show him my skills,” she murmured to herself. She dressed herself in her ballerina costume and managed to avoid the guards and hid in the dressing room to wait, with her heart pounding. It was uncertain whether she could see the leader.

Luckily, the leader entered and she timidly knocked at the door.

She bravely approached him and handed him a bunch of red roses. And in her excitement, she pricked (刺) her finger on the thorns but she did not make a big thing about the pain. The leader observed her action, nodding his head slightly, as she told him her dream. “All right, you dance and I will give you my judgment.”

But half way through the dance he stopped her and said with an impish (恶作剧的) smile Cindy didn’t notice, “I’m sorry you’re not good enough!” On hearing this, Cindy was too ashamed to ask the leader the reason and ran crying away, as fast as her legs could carry her without a brief stay. Shaking his head in disappointment, the leader said to himself, “Persistence matters more than talent.”

Three years passing, she was still chasing her dream. Then one day she heard that the same ballet troupe was performing in her town again. Bitter memories of the leader’s harsh words came flooding back to her. This time she was determined to find out why the leader had told her she was not good enough when all her teachers thought otherwise.
