文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章讲述了现代农民采用高科技从事农业活动,农民的形象已经不再是人们过去认为的样子了。

1 . A few weeks ago, I sat with a California farmer named Dave Ribeiro. I asked him what he wished more people knew about farmers. He smiled and said, “That we walk among you. We look like you and talk like you. We have advanced degrees and hobbies, just like you.”

Take Dave: He’s a young man with a music degree. And if you walked past him on the street, you’d never think, “There goes a farmer.”

Is someone like Dave who you picture when you think of a farmer? Probably not. I think that most people would picture a man in his overalls. I can tell you, that does not represent Dave or any of the many other farmers I have gotten to know.

Not only do we have to throw out our stereotypes of farmers, but farming as a whole doesn’t look much like it used to either. We recently sent a team out to see what modern farming looks like, and they found farmers to be completely different from our usual ideas about them and also came across them in some unexpected places.

In a parking lot in a neighborhood of Brooklyn, they met a new crop of young farmers who are trying to bring fresh greens closer to eaters in the city by growing them in high-tech indoor vertical farms. In a Florida field under the flight path of an airport, they discovered farmers with university degrees growing algae (藻类) that might someday fuel our cars. And in a modern farm in California, they observed how farmers are using technology to take the best possible care of their animals.

These farmers all spend their days in very different ways — none of them looks like the stereotypical farmer we have in our mind — but they’re all working on new ways to feed our planet. Not only do we need to change our idea of what farming looks like, but we also need to change our view of where solutions can come from. Feeding all of us is going to take all of us working together.

1. How does Dave describe today’s farmers?
A.They often walk on the street.B.They are leading a very busy life.
C.They are similar to ordinary people.D.They have little time to make friends.
2. How does the author think most people see farmers?
A.They usually wear overalls.B.They have interesting hobbies.
C.They are skilled at growing crops.D.They know modern farming practices.
3. What was the purpose of the team?
A.To deepen connections among farmers.
B.To study different technologies in farming.
C.To report on the new developments of farming.
D.To encourage farmers to use new farming methods.
4. What do the farmers mentioned in Paragraph 5 have in common?
A.They all work in the city.B.They all use high technology.
C.They all do hard physical work.D.They all work with universities.

2 .

These days, football is one of the most popular sports in the world. Considering that Neil Armstrong wanted to take a football to the Moon, we could even say that it is also the most popular sport out of this world!

The history of the game goes back over two thousand years to ancient China. It was then known as cuju (kick ball), a game using a ball of animal skins with hair inside. Goals were hung in the air. Football as we know it today started in Great Britain, where the game was given new rules.

That football is such a simple game to play is perhaps the basis of its popularity. It is also a game that is very cheap to play. You don't need expensive equipment; even the ball doesn't have to cost much money. All over the world you can see kids playing to their hearts' content with a ball made of plastic bags, just like Pele did when he was a boy.

Another factor behind football's global popularity is the creativity and excitement on the field. It is fun enough to attract millions of people. You do not have to be a fan to recognise the skill of professional players-how they use their bodies to pass, score and defend can be amazing to see-or to feel the excitement of a game ending with a surprising twist.

What's more, football has become one of the best ways for people to communicate. It does not require words, but everyone understands it. It breaks down walls and brings people together on and off the field. Take, for example, the famous football game on Christmas Day 1914, World War I had broken out months before, but British and German soldiers put down their guns and played football together-one moment of peace to remember during years of conflict.

"Some people believe football is a matter of life and death ..." said Bill Shankly, the famous footballer and manager. "I can assure you it is much, much more important than that." This might sound funny, but one only has to think about the earth to realise that our planet is shaped like a football.

1. About the development of football, we know that ________.
A.the history of football dates back to ancient China
B.Neil Armstrong once took a football to the moon
C.the goal of ancient football was fixed on the ground
D.the rules of football have never been changed
2. According to the text, football is popular because ________.
A.Pele played football
B.it is given new rules
C.it is simple, cheap and fun to play
D.it attracts many professional players
3. What can we learn from the last two paragraphs?
A.World War I was over.
B.British soldiers wanted to win the war.
C.Football is not important.
D.Football can help people to communicate.

3 . The Wake-up Call

“What’s that?” my ten-year-old daughter, Genie, asked. She’d caught me laughing at a piece of mail I’d just opened. “Wake-up service; $2.50 per call.” At the bottom was a phone number and a drawing of a rotary phone, like the one my great-aunt Sara             had owned 40 years ago.
“Is that mail funny?” Genie asked.
“Not really,” I admitted. “It’s just outdated.”
“What’s a wake-up call?” She frowned (皱眉). I explained how, before smart-phones, people sometimes paid someone to wake them with a call.
“Who sent this flyer?” she pressed.
“Probably someone older,” I said, “and could use some money.”
Her eyes lit up. “Can we order a wake-up?” she asked.
“We don’t need it.” I picked it up and headed for the recycling bin.
“Wait!” she shrieked.
“I feel sorry for the wake-up man, if he needs some money,” she said, tearing up. “Can’t we order?”
I looked at the flyer with its drawing of a rotary phone. I remembered, again, my great-aunt Sara and her rotary phone. As a kid, I’d visited her over Labor Day, when Jerry Lewis would host his charity event for the disabled kids. Aunt Sara would             squeeze my hand, then reach for the rotary phone, dialing the number on the screen. Holding the receiver between us, we’d announce to the operator, “We’d like to help those kids.”
Now here was my own child, showing the same big heart I’d once been encouraged to have, and how could I ignore her? I Googled the flyer’s return address. The address belonged to a man called Raymond. He was in his mid-60s. We called him and, holding             the receiver between us, the way Aunt Sara and I used to, told him we needed his services. “Great!” Raymond said in a shaky but friendly voice, clearly amazed at receiving an order from a child. When I asked how to pay the $2.50, he answered,             “Mail a check.”
Genie was happy all week. Friday night, I put the phone by her pillow so she could answer Raymond’s call. She bounded to my bedroom to tell me all about how he’d wished her a good morning and told her to have a great day, which she did.
Technology has made some things outdated. But there are still other things the world will always require. In the rush and hustle of my daily life, I’d temporarily forgotten that. I guess I just needed a wake-up call.
1. The author laughed at the mail because ________.
A.it was printed roughly
B.the drawing in it was poor
C.the wake-up call cost too much
D.the service it offered was outdated
2. What did the author want to do with the flyer at first?
A.Throw it away.
B.Let Genie read it.
C.Find out who sent it.
D.Keep it away from Genie.
3. What made the author finally decide to order a wake-up call?
A.Her own childhood experience.
B.The less fortunate wake-up man.
C.Genie’s curiosity about the service.
D.The information she found on Google.
4. What might “other things” in the last paragraph refer to?
A.Bravery and curiosity.
B.Confidence and patience.
C.Honesty and humor.
D.Generosity and kindness.

5 . The Mystery of the Famous Word Collector

One of the greatest contributors to the first Oxford English Dictionary was also one of its most unusual. In 1879, Oxford University in England asked Prof. James Murray to serve as editor for what was to be the most ambitious dictionary in the history of the English language. It would include every English word possible and would give not only the definition but also the history of the word and quotations(引文)showing how it was used.

This was a huge task, so Murray had to find volunteers from Britain, the United States, and the British colonies to search every newspaper, magazine, and book ever written in English. Hundreds of volunteers responded, including William Chester Minor. Dr. Minor was an American surgeon who had served in the Civil War and was now living in England. He gave his address as “Broadmoor, Crowthorne, Berkshire,” 50 miles from Oxford.

Minor joined the army of volunteers sending words and quotations to Murray. Over the next 17 years, he became one of the staff’s most valued contributors.

But he was also a mystery. In spite of many invitations, he would always decline to visit Oxford. So in 1897, Murray finally decided to travel to Crowthorne himself. When he arrived, he found Minor locked in a book-lined room at the Broadmoor Asylum(精神病院)for the Criminally Insane.

Murray and Minor became friends, sharing their love of words. Minor continued contributing to the dictionary, sending in more than 10,000 submissions in 20 years. Murray continued to visit Minor regularly, sometimes taking walks with him around the asylum grounds.

In 1910, Minor left Broadmoor for an asylum in his native America. Murray was at the port to wave goodbye to his remarkable friend.

Minor died in 1920, seven years before the first edition of the Oxford English Dictionary was completed. The 12 volumes defined 414, 825 words, and thousands of them were contributions from a very scholarly and devoted asylum patient.

1. According to the text, the first Oxford English Dictionary________.
A.came out before Minor died
B.was edited by an American volunteer
C.included the English words invented by Murray
D.was intended to be the most ambitious English dictionary
2. How did Dr. Minor contribute to the dictionary ?
A.He went to England to work with Murray.
B.He helped Murray to find hundreds of volunteers.
C.He sent newspapers, magazines and books to Murray.
D.He provided a great number of words and quotations.
3. Prof. Murray and Dr. Minor became friends mainly because________.
A.they both served in the Civil War
B.they had a common interest in words
C.Minor recovered with the help of Murray
D.Murray went to America regularly to visit Minor

8 . While Jennifer was at home taking an online exam for her business law class, a monitor(监控器)a few hundred miles away was watching her every move.

Using a web camera equipped in Jennifer’s Los Angeles apartment, the monitor in Phoenix tracked how frequently her eyes moved from the computer screen and listened for the secret sounds of a possible helper in the room. Her Internet access was locked-remotely-to prevent Internet searches, and her typing style was analyzed to make sure she was who she said she was: Did she enter her student number at the same speed as she had in the past? Or was she slowing down?

In the battle against cheating, this is the cutting edge and a key to encourage honestly in the booming field of on line education. The technology gives trust to the entire system, to the institution and to online education in general. Only with solid measures against cheating, experts say, can Internet universities show that their exams and diplomas are valid—that students haven’t searched the Internet to get the right answers.

Although online classes have existed for more than a decade, the concern over cheating has become sharper in the last year with the growth of “open online courses.” Private colleges, public universities and corporations are jumping into the online education field, spending millions of dollars to attract potential students, while also taking steps to help guarantee honesty at a distance.

Aside from the web cameras, a number of other high-tech methods are becoming increasingly popular. Among them are programs that check student’s identities using personal information, such as the telephone numbers they once used.

Other programs can produce unique exams by drawing on a large list of questions and can recognize possible cheaters by analyzing whether difficult test questions are answered at the same speed as easy ones. As in many university classes, term papers are scanned against some large Internet data banks for cheating.

1. Why was Jennifer watched in an online exam?
A.To correct her typing mistakes.B.To find her secrets in the room.
C.To keep her from dishonest behaviors.D.To prevent her from slowing down.
2. The underlined expression “cutting edge” in Paragraph 3 is closest in meaning to ________.
A.sharpening toolB.advanced technique
C.effective ruleD.dividing line
3. Some programs can find out possible cheaters by ________.
A.scanning the Internet test questions
B.checking the question answering speed
C.producing a large number of questions
D.giving difficult test questions
4. Which of the following is the best title of this passage?
A.The Advantages of Online Exams
B.The High-tech Methods in Online Courses
C.The War against the Booming of Online Education
D.The Fight against Cheating in Online Education

9 . While silver-glassed mirrors still serve a useful purpose when reflecting your image back to you, some fashion and beauty leaders figured that if you added smart technology to mirrors, they could elevate(提升) the customer’s experience.
