5 . I live in a university dorm with a couple of great roommates. I have a never-ending flow of messages and updates from all the people I associate with online. Yet the truth of the matter is: I feel lonely.
I’m barely the only person who feels this way. According to research, over two-thirds of young people find it easier to make friends online than it is “in real life”. I’m way beyond a shy or reserved person, but I’m wired up every day, like most of my friends. On the surface, I have an active social life. I attend parties and play sports but I’m always distracted. They say that phones bring people closer together but in reality, my mind is always a million miles away. I obsess over exactly how many followers I have on my account, but I can’t remember the birthdays of some of my oldest mates.
From the passage, we know that the writer________.
A.is a shy and reserved person |
B.doesn’t have many friends in real life |
C.cares too much about how many followers he has online |
D.believes that attending parties and playing sports make him distracted |
6 . Most people assume that the human brain is set on “automatic”—that means it learns all by itself. But this isn’t always true. We need to train ourselves to be better learners—to actively take part in the learning process and to reflect on what we have learnt. These kinds of learning behaviours are called“active learning”. I suggest doing the following things to take an active role in your learning.
1. Listen to the outer voice
There are two kinds of voices: the inner voice and the outer voice. Y our inner voice expresses your personal opinions, while the outer voice tells you about opinions from what you hear or read. Although your inner voice can be useful, it can also get in the way of learning. If you keep paying too much attention to it, you risk missing important information. Instead, active learners are open-minded and focus on what the speaker / writer is saying, not on what their brain is saying in the background. In this way, they are in a better position to make decisions.
2. Get to the truth
Active learners do not accept everything they learn. They attempt to find the truth at the heart of each idea. Even when an idea sounds entirely unlikely, there may be an aspect of it that is based on truth. So if someone says that dinosaurs still exist today, think about why they believe this. Where does the idea come from? Do they have enough data to support their views? If you try to find out the source of an idea, no matter how crazy it seems, you will increase your chance of learning something.
1. What do most people believe about the human brain?A.It needs to be trained. |
B.It can learn in an automatic way. |
C.It can’t help us reflect on what we have learnt. |
D.It can help us take part in the learning process actively. |
A.Try hard to figure out the facts. |
B.Let the outer voice get in the way. |
C.Pay no attention to what others say. |
D.Pay no attention to an idea that sounds impossible. |
7 . Gravy started working as a comfort dog at Grand Ledge High School in Michigan in September. She showed off tricks in the hallways with her handler (驯兽员), Capra, and made students laugh aloud. When students learned that Gravy’s first birthday fell just before Thanksgiving break, they asked Capra if they could throw a party. Capra said sure, thinking there wouldn’t be many people interested. However, on the big day, there were several hundred students in this gym.
The pandemic (大流行病) has been hard on students across the United States. Many young people experienced loneliness and the loss of loved ones. To solve the problem, schools have hired social workers and increased the number of their social-emotional learning classes. In some cases, they bought dogs.
Undoubtedly, the dogs make kids happy.“He’s kind of like a rock star; when the kids see him coming, they smile,“ said Traci Souva, an art teacher at North Huron Schools who trains Chipper, another comfort dog. “A lot of times the kids will tell Chipper what’s wrong rather than adults, and that’s pretty amazing.”
There are possible blemishes of having dogs in school. These include cleanliness, and student fears. But school officials say these are all manageable. The dogs are highly trained and always with a handler, so no student is forced to communicate with the dogs if they don’t want to.
Since the pandemic, demand for trained dogs in schools“has just increased,“ said Nikki Brown, a dog trainer and the director of Canines for Change, a nonprofit that trains dogs for work in schools. Over the last year, her organization has provided dogs to at least seven areas in Michigan, including Grand Ledge. “The dogs are highly trained to be in a school environment,” she added.“They are trained to work with kids with emotional problems. They sense stress. By the dogs’ behaviour they might warn a teacher of a kid who is struggling emotionally.“

8 . You might see loneliness as someone old sits alone, staring into the distance or out of a window. However, such images are misleading.
Loneliness is a negative feeling about a difference among the friends.
Even if you find yourself feeling lonely and it seems like nothing is helping, do not give up hope. Start with what you can do on your own and move on to ways to connect with others.
A.These can make the feeling of loneliness worse. |
B.There are certain features of youth that tend to cause loneliness. |
C.Loneliness serves the function of keeping us safe in our social world. |
D.Another reason is our developing sense of self-discovering who we are. |
E.This means we might feel lonely in the company of others if we don’t fit in. |
F.It is most likely that you have not actually found the strategy that works for you. |
G.Researchers have found those experiencing loneliness are mostly young people. |
9 . Customized STEM Study Trips for High School Groups
On our science-based study tours and STEM field trips, the planet becomes the living classroom for high school groups with as few as 10 participating students. We have over 50 years of experience in designing student STEM trips around the globe for all science related subjects - everything from Astronomy to Zoology! You can select from a number of topical areas to add to your curriculum and maximize student learning including, but not limited to:
Earth Sciences & Geology Trips
Participate in problem-solving workshops on topics like vectors, exponentials or calculus in physics. Tour the facility at CERN, site of the world’s largest particle physics laboratory. Start a geological adventure through Iceland, the land of fire and ice, or explore the alpine landscapes, mountaintops and glaciers of Switzerland.
Life Sciences & Biodiversity Trips
Our life sciences and biodiversity programs offer a window into the fascinating worlds of biology, zoology, botany, ecology and many others. Explore the interdependence of various species and their impact on one another in the rainforest of Bolivia. Consider changes in geography, habitat, atmosphere, and how life forms have adapted… or not!
Mathematics & Technology Trips
Uncover the significant impact of mathematics and technology on human life in our developing world. Understand how a storm surge barrier works and how countries like the Netherlands use wind turbines to power all of their electric trains. Learn what goes into making and breaking codes like those used in World War II.
Green Engineering Trips
Learn the basic function of photovoltaic (光电的) cells and how they form together to make solar panels. Investigate how various factors like temperature and angle impact the performance of solar panels, and take on the role of an engineer and develop the optimal solar panel array for a given geographic location.
We can also customize STEM trips based on your interests and needs. Please contact us at 800-522-2398 or email us today at educationalpartnerships@worldstrides.org to discuss other academic themes you are interested in pursuing.
