2 . The Scout’s (童子军) slogan is “Do a Good Turn Daily.” In Troop 506 of Ham Lake, a 13-year-old Scout Jonathan is pioneering new trails when it comes to “good turns.”
Like many troops, 506 sells popcorn to raise money. Many Scouts fear trying to convince people to buy from them. But in 2019, Jonathan watched as kids who’d made $1,800 or more in sales crossed a stage to receive a Lego set as a reward. “I really wanted that Lego set,” he says.
The next year, he earned his Legos. But Troop 506 doesn’t just give out Lego sets. Under its generous reward program, Scouts receive a percentage of their sales in gift cards and cash points for activities. Inspired, Jonathan spent the next few years developing an astonishing skill for selling.
Popcorn too expensive? A simple donation will do. No cash? He also takes plastic. He marched into a car dealership and struck a deal with the dealer: In all his sales efforts, he’d wear a mask with the company’s logo if the owner would buy popcorn for all his employees.
Jonathan started pulling down jaw-dropping numbers. In 2021, he was a top seller and earning $5,000. He might have spent it on himself, but he had other ideas. The holidays were on his mind - particularly the stories his father had told him about his own days in foster care where the real Christmas-morning experience his father was once denied.
“They didn’t really have Christmas,” Jonathan says. With $5,000, he could bring Christmas to a lot of kids. He shifted from big seller to big spender, hand-selecting $5,000 worth of gifts for several kids. “It really makes me happy,” he says, “the feeling that I’m making those kids happy on Christmas.”
“This is the reason why we do Scouting. Jonathan’s a great example for all of us” says his scoutmaster, Aaron Miller.

10-year-old Aiden went to the first door and knocked on it. An older woman answered the door.
“Good morning!” Aiden said. “My name is Aiden. My mom is sick, and I want to get food for her. Can I get some money, please?” But the woman suspected and refused. Aiden didn’t lose heart and knocked on the second door. “Can I please ask for some money, ma’am? My mom is very sick!” he begged sadly. The woman who answered the door gave him a concerned look. “Oh! Should I call the CPS (儿童保护署) or an ambulance? Do you want me to come with you?”
“Ugh, well,” Aiden hesitated. “It’s alright. I just remembered I had to go somewhere,” he ran away. That whole day, Aiden went from door to door asking for money, but sadly, he got none.
A couple of days later, Aiden returned to the neighborhood and saw a new couple had moved into what used to be an empty house. He decided to try his luck and knocked on the door, and a young woman answered.
Aiden told her his name and repeated what he said to the other residents. The woman smiled, “I’m Lauren. Just wait here. I’ll get you some money and food, okay?” Aiden nodded as Lauren went inside. She returned with two huge bags of groceries and a $100 bill. “I hope these can help your mother,” she said.
“Thank you!” he exclaimed happily as he carried the two bags over his shoulder and ran away.
Waving him goodbye, Lauren realized that Aiden was hiding something. She decided to drive after him secretly to find out more about his story. Soon, they came to an area without houses, and then Aiden disappeared under a bridge. Lauren pulled over and walked to the bridge. She spotted him and froze. Aiden was living with a little girl in a tent under the bridge. She heard Aiden saying to the girl, “Beth, we have food now. You won’t go hungry.”

6 . When I read a post about taking someone to the movies, I was reminded of something that happened a couple of years ago.
I used to drink Cokes and they had a promotion where there was a code inside the bottle cap. You went to a website and entered the code and maybe you won something. I won some free Cokes. But then I won the grand prize! I was surprised and pleased.
The grand prize was free movies for a year. They pointed out that one movie a week was that free movies for a year meant. All of the tickets had a deadline later than a year from the day I received them. So I must use them in the following year. I used quite a few by taking friends to movies we all wanted to see.
But the best thing I did with them was that I donated 22 tickets (all I had left by that time) to the local Women’s Transition House, a place where women and their children could go when avoiding a bad situation in general and get help to make a new start.
My workplace team had decided to help people in need, so we collected donations for that particular New Year’s Day. I knew the Women’s Transition House provided childcare for the women so they could go for job interviews.
I put those tickets in a box and wrote a note, asking the Women’s Transition House staff to give movie tickets to women there over the holidays to have something fun to do, with or without their children. It made me really happy to do this.

In a small town called Meadowville, there was a beloved playground that had brought joy to generations of children. 11-year-old Emma and her best friends, Alice and Leo, were among those who idled away their after-school time and weekends there all year round. It was a place where imaginations soared, friendships blossomed, and laughter echoed through the air.
One afternoon, rushing out the school gate, Emma shouted, “Let’s go down to the playground!” The three of them got there soon, but it was locked up. The fence was broken and the swings had tape around them.
Shocked, they stared into each other’s eyes, not knowing why. A man approached them, explaining that it was unsafe and the council had decided to shut it down.
“Will they fix it?” asked Alice.
“No. it will cost a lot, at least ten thousand dollars.” the man shook his head, walking away. Leo looked desperate, gazing at the playground and then hanging his head, as if bidding farewell. “We need to get some help!” Emma dragged Alice towards her home.
On stepping into the house, Emma exclaimed, “Dad! We need ten thousand dollars...” Her dad, who was drinking coffee, turned his head around, “What?” Alice then revealed the truth. Hearing this heart-breaking news, Emma’s parents were more than surprised, for their childhood was closely connected with that playground as well. They spread the news to other families.
Instead of providing the money, they suggested the children take matters into their own hands while parents offered assistance.
