Once, a poor boy lived in a village with his mother and little sisters. The village was beautiful, but not a highly populated area, since many of its residents had moved to the cities in search of livelihood.
The boy’s mother worked very hard to feed her children. His father had passed away a few years ago. One day, as the mother was returning from work, rain started. She was wet through by the time she reached home. She was trembling badly, and fell sick. After a few days of being ill, she passed away.
Now there was no one at the home who could work and make some money. The food was over in a few days. One morning, the boy woke up feeling hungry, but there was nothing to eat. His two younger sisters were also hungry, and they looked at their brother with sad eyes.
At first, the boy didn’t know what he could do to feed his sisters and himself. He was not strong enough to do heavy jobs. Besides, he had no technique to do skilled work. However, they had to live. So finally, the boy decided to do some work and earn money to buy food. After sometime, he found a part-time job to do. He worked very hard. The boss was quite satisfied with the intelligent boy and his workmates liked him and cared for him as much as possible. Gradually, the boy got enough money to buy items for his sisters and himself. Soon they rode out the storm and lived a happy life.

It had been a challenging week, marked by a sudden large increase in oil prices coinciding with a sharp drop in temperatures in Boston. It was nearly below zero degree. With three missed workdays under my belt, my upcoming paycheck was going to be lower than normal. The stress weighed heavily on me as I carefully sought for every conceivable opportunity to save pennies, ensuring that I could afford both groceries and keep the house warm.
My eight-year-old son didn’t understand when I told him we were struggling that week. He had his heart set on a particular brand of yogurt, but I didn’t have the extra three dollars to buy it for him. It was the kind of yogurt decorated with a cartoon child skateboarding on its packaging, containing a mere two spoonfuls per cup. Such products, designed to lure children with their flashy marketing, only served to make me hate advertising.
However, a bunch of parental guilt gripped me as his innocent eyes met mine, silently questioning, “Why is yogurt such a big deal?” Determıned to sweep his disappointment, I made a sacrifice typical of single mothers. I returned an item needed to the shelf, ensuring that he could enjoy his favorite yogurt.
On the journey back from the grocery store, a sight caught my attention—a homeless man, holding a sign by the roadside. My heart ached, and I turned around, observing passers-by purposefully steer (绕开) clear of him, avoiding any meaningful interaction. Even my son didn’t seem to care much. either. Yet, upon closer inspection, I noticed the man—bare hands grasping a piece of cardboard, snot frozen to his face, a worn-out jacket. And there I was struggling because I had to buy oil and groceries. But I decided to help. I pulled over to the man and handed him a five-dollar bill.

What is China? China is very diverse. It not only has skyscrapers in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Shenzhen, but also has vast rural fields and the rural society. In September 2017, we started a social enterprise, Beyond the City, which connects urban and rural areas: hoping to help urban children expand their rural horizons and help rural children learn more about career possibilities.
We created the Rural Filed Study Project and brought 1000 children from more than 30 cities to the Tibetan area of Ganzi plateau, the terraces of the Red River in Yunnan, as well as the ancient hunting tribe of Aoluguya. Instead of traveling of teaching as volunteers, we lived in the locals’ homes and took courses in social research, opera performances, architectural design, etc.
Also, we initiated the City Career Planning Project and brought more than 100 rural children from deep within the mountains of Liangshan to Shanghai to study courses about career planning and development. so as to help them to understand all walks of life and get to know a real city life. We try our best to help them avoid the fate of dropping out when they still have the chance to choose.
Additionally, we established the Career Connection Workshop, attempting to bring quality education and career courses in first-tier cities to children in towns and small cities, connecting textbook knowledge with future careers and offline classes with online resources. Evolving from this platform, we are now embarking on the path to launch the Digital Skills Exchange Workshops within the next two years.
Beyond the City is committed to build mutual trust and connection between urban and rural areas, addressing inequalities and laying the foundations for a more equal world.

For years, putting up Christmas lights had been a family tradition for the Patrick’s household. It was an occasion when they would busily prepare for the celebration of Christmas.
Their Christmas light display was always a highlight of the neighborhood and brought much delight to the whole community. Typically, Anthony would invite the neighbors over as they decorated the Christmas tree in the front yard. Emily, who lived next door and had known Sara’s family for long, often came to admire their wonderland of Christmas lights.
In early December, Anthony would string colorful lights all around their roof until it looked dazzling. On the front lawn, he would blow up a large white Frosty the Snowman and a Rudolph with a glowing red nose. Sara always joined in, along with their warm-hearted neighbors, hanging gifts on the tree and playing “White Christmas” over and over to keep everyone in the spirit.
Yet the bad news came in the midst of the festive mood, before they could finish the Christmas decoration. Anthony fell desperately ill. The symptoms suggested acute heart failure and he was soon admitted to hospital. Sara spent days and nights in the ward, attending to Anthony and praying for his recovery, though the hope was slim. On Christmas Eve, Anthony passed away.
It came as a huge blow to Sara. In the following days, she had to manage the funeral while struggling to figure out a way to cover housing and household expenses, and tackling a seemingly endless list of difficult to-dos. Perhaps hardest of all, she had to persuade herself into accepting the loss of her father. It was too much to take.
When she pulled up to the house after a long day on the go, the only thing that could comfort her were the twinkling Christmas lights, which brought her a spark of hope-it felt as if the brightness of the lights could cancel out some of the darkness of the past days’ misfortune.
Wanting to help, Emily shared their story on a community website.
