4 . What do you do with the things you love? You probably take care of them and keep them safe. That’s not what Cameron Payne does. The boy from North Carolina is sharing his love of books by giving them away.
When Cameron heard about a family who lost everything in a house fire, he was looking for a way to help them. He was sad that all of their books were destroyed. That’s when he created his program, which gives books away to people in need.
Cameron’s program collects books for young people of all ages and reading levels. He collects books for kids who are blind or with low vision, too, because he wants everyone to have books. Cameron knows that books can help kids think about their future. They do this by helping kids dream about what they might be when they grow up. Learning about new things can give kids new interests. Six years later, Cameron is still giving away books.
Many of the books he gives away were given to him by others, but Cameron’s grandmother also shops for books that don’t cost a lot. She buys books that are new or that look new. In addition to working with schools, Cameron and his grandmother give books to children in places near their home, such as hospitals, libraries, and day camps.
Cameron wants to keep his program going and growing. Over the past six years, he has given away more than 3,000 books. He has also won many prizes for his work. His program has grown over the years, too. Last Christmas, Cameron was able to give away toys and books.

As I stood in line waiting to cash out at my favorite supermarket, I studied the customer in front of me who was reading the magazines to our left. She was young, maybe early twenties, but she had a tired look on her face-as if life had beaten her down too many times.
The items in her cart included the cheapest cuts of meat, rice, and potatoes. Powdered milk, day-old bread, bargain soap, and inexpensive shampoo completed her purchases-well, almost. There were also lots of instant noodles and a pretty dress that was 50 percent off.
She continued to look at the magazines as we waited, and more people lined up behind us. She finally took one out and turned it over several times, trying to find a price before finally turning to me.
“I’m sorry to bother you,” she began timidly. “But can you tell me how much this is? I forgot my glasses at home.” “Of course,” I said with a laugh.
When I finally found the small print and told her, she sighed quietly and put it back. “They’ve become so expensive, haven’t they?” I murmured sympathetically.
“Next!” The cashier called before she could answer, and she moved forward to begin her transaction. When the store employee finally told her the cost, the woman’s face paled. She opened an old purse and began counting small bills and change. It was obvious she didn’t have enough, and she scanned her groceries to see what she could do without.
One by one, she removed things, but she still came up short. She continued to discard much-needed goods while the cashier patiently deducted (减去) things with a pleasant smile, setting them aside.
The man right behind me complained loudly enough for all to hear, and the young woman’s cheeks reddened with embarrassment. I wanted desperately to pay for her groceries outright, but I knew that would embarrass her even more.
”Take your time,“ I added gently as she tried to decide what other necessity she could return. “I’m in no hurry.”

Last Saturday David was taking a walk in the park near his home when he noticed a woman with a boy of about eight years old. When David passed them, he heard the woman yelling: “How stupid you are! You’re good at nothing.” David stopped and looked at the little boy. The boy said nothing. He just stood there, looking upset.
David was reminded of his English teacher Mrs. Brown in middle school. After he entered middle school, David lacked self-confidence because he was often made fun of by others. He was often told that he was good at nothing, which David believed.
But one day it all changed. That day, in an English writing class, Mrs. Brown asked them to read a novel. They were asked to write a new chapter of the novel after they finished reading it. A few days later, David handed in his story. He didn’t give it much thought. But the next day to his surprise, the comment “well done” from Brown came into view the moment he turned to the page where the story was written. When David read that, he almost burst into tears. He had never expected to be praised. He suddenly gained some self-confidence.
That day after he returned home, he wrote another short story and gave it to Mrs. Brown the next morning. And again he was praised. David became very interested in writing. He often wrote short dories and asked Mrs. Brown to read them and correct them for him. Mrs. Brown always gave him good advice to improve them. One year later, David joined the school newspaper and became an editor of it. He gained his confidence and was hopeful about his future.
He succeeded in entering college and kept writing. Several years after graduating from college, he had his first book published, becoming famous as a writer in his country. And he owed his success to Mrs. Brown’s encouragement. Without her encouragement, his life might be very different now.

Then my Today show colleague Matt threw me a lifeline by asking whether I felt well enough to tape a“ Where in the World?” segment (节目). He suggested kindly that I pick a couple of days and escape. On second thought, I jumped at the chance.
The trip was fun, and on the plane back home, my plan was to sleep for the entire flight. The earbuds were an inch away from going in when the guy beside turned to me and said, “Hi. How are you doing? I recognize you from somewhere.”
“I work on the Today show,” I told him, still holding my earbuds.
He smiled at me. “How’s Matt? Is Matt nice?”
“Yeah,” I said. “Matt’s nice.”
“How’s Al? Al seems funny.”
He then noticed I was wearing a compression sleeve (压力袖套) on my arm and asked what that was. I told him I’d had a “procedure” and needed the sleeve to fly, hoping we could change the subject.
But he continued, “What procedure did you have?”
“I had an operation,” I said vaguely. Defeated by his curiosity, I finally said, “I had breast cancer. But, I hope that’s not the first thing you think of when getting off this flight, telling your kids, ‘Hey, I sat next to this girl with breast cancer.’”
He paused for a moment and said, “What’s wrong with that? It is part of you, like going to college or getting married. Let me give you some advice: Don’t hog(独占) your journey. It’s not just for you. Think of how many people you could help.”
I could feel tears coming down my face.
“Look! You have a choice in life. You can either put your story deep in your pockets and take it to your grave, or you can help someone.”
Despite being open on a show, I’ve always been a private person, and aside from the few people who needed to know, I’d kept my illness secret. I didn’t want to be defined by my weakness.

“Helen! Are you coming?” a voice from downstairs. “Yes!” Helen replied, quickly putting on her slightly tight dress. “Where are we going, Dad?” she asked, surprised by this rare opportunity to spend time with her father. He had been working tirelessly to support the family.
“We’re off to collect the rent,” he responded. “Oh,” she understood. The rent was their lifeline during the Great Depression, and going without it was unthinkable.
Their first stop was Mrs. Miller’s, who quickly handed them the rent in dollar bills, but the second tenant(租客)Mr. Schmidt was still searching his home for coins when they arrived. Apologizing, he gave them a bag of coins.
But the third tenants, the Katzes, worried Helen and her father. Their financial struggles had worsened, even though her father had reduced their rent. Her father said it was important to be especially good to this family because Mr. Katz had served in the army in the Great War and deserved their gratitude.
Mrs. Katz greeted them at the door, her eyes red from crying. Despite their financial difficulties, the inside of the apartment was always beautifully clean. Mr. Katz and the two children were sitting at a table, waiting for Mr. Resnick. They all had such thin faces! Helen was embarrassed, suddenly, by her own round cheeks and strong body. They felt like marks of her guilt when she saw the little girl’s narrow, sad face and the boy’s big eyes.
Mr. Katz gave Helen’s father the money he was holding, and her father thanked him. Just as they were about to leave, Mrs. Katz’s trembling voice stopped them. She said, “Mr. Resnick, we haven’t eaten in two days.” Helen couldn’t imagine such a thing. Her stomach ached just to think of it.
They returned to the table, and Helen’s father silently placed the Katzes’ rent money back on it and counted out two dollars in coins. “Helen,” he said, “I want you to go to the grocer’s with this money, buy food, and bring it back here.”
