As Alina sat gently rocking and singing, her two-year-old son was lying on her chest (胸口). He was suffering from a serious disease. It was December 22nd, and they were staying at the hospital.

As Alina rocked, her mind was working overtime. She was worrying about money. She was working as a manager for a retail(零售) chain, and it was the busiest time of the year. Alina had already taken almost all her vacation time and knew she would not be paid for the days she was now taking off. And she had only a couple of hundred dollars in the bank.

But Alina s main concern was her son. His health had not been good. She didn' t know how she would be able to manage, working full-time and looking after him. Feeling sad, Alina felt the tears well up and spill over (溢出).

And that' s when Lorna arrived. She had been Alina s assistant.Quickly blinking (眨眼睛) back the tears, Alina welcomed her in.Lorna had come to offer some support and had brought a card signed by the office staff, about fifteen people. Alina was touched they were thinking of her during a completely crazy work week. But as she read the card, she discovered there was more. Inside the card was this note.Dear Alina. We want to help. Each person who has signed this card has donated one vacation day into your account. We know you need to spend some time with your son and don' t want you to worry about having to take time off without pay."

Even the company owner had donated a day to her. Alina was speechless and got quite choked up (哽咽). The tears held back earlier now threatened to spill over again. She was so touched by such kindness.

After Lorna left, Alina felt an inner peace and a deep gratitude. If only they could get home in time, she felt sure she could pull some sort of Christmas celebration together for her kid. Alina went to sleep that night with renewed hope.

5 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

On Oct. 4. 2021, James and his friend Raphael were squeezing in a lunchtime workout on Pier (码头) 15 overlooking the East River, when James froze. “Somebody’s in the water,” he shouted. Before Raphael could respond. James climbed over the rail at the edge of the pier and leaped into the cold, polluted water without taking the time to remove his shoes.

What James had heard was an alarmed fisherman shouting from Pier 16. nearly 50 yards away, “Help! He’s in the water!” And what he’d seen was a person floating, lifeless.

Raphael didn’t need to see the victim. “Maybe the fisherman saw someone in the water who needs our help.” he thought. “Or maybe it’s the fisherman who needs my help. Either way, I’m going in.” He yanked off his shoes and swan-dived.

Approaching the unconscious victim, James saw that it was a middle-aged man. He was big, around 200 pounds, respectably dressed and sinking fast. He was 3 feet below the surface by the time James reached him. James dove, felt around, grasped the man and kicked upward until they both resurfaced. Raphael was there now. Treading(踩,踏) water, the two friends floated the man on his back. As Raphael looped his arms around the man’s shoulders and James supported the hips and knees, they made their way back to Pier 15, exhausted.

They might have been hauling a corpse (尸体). The man’s skin was blue, and neither Raphael nor James detected any breathing. When at last they reached Pier 15, they faced a new uncertainty.

How to get out? The pier’s decking stood an unreachable 10 feet above their heads. A metal beam was covered by sharp barnacles. If Raphael, shoeless, attempted to climb onto it, he’d hurt his bare feet.

Suddenly the man breathed again, stirred and clobbered (狠揍) confusedly Raphael in the face before fading back to near unconsciousness.

9 . 读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Tiffany’s difficulties began last year when she had guests at her home for Thanksgiving and then again for Christmas. Her husband had been in medical school and was now in the second year of his medical residency. Because of the long work hours required of him, he was not able to help her as much as they both would have liked, and so most of that which needed to be accomplished during this holiday season, in addition to the care of their four young children, fell to Tiffany. She was becoming overwhelmed, and then she learned that one who was dear to her had been diagnosed with cancer. The stress and worry began to take a heavy burden on her, and she slipped into a period of discouragement and depression. She sought medical help, and yet nothing changed. Her appetite disappeared, and she began to lose weight. Her family and friends prayed for her and tried desperately to help. They delivered her favorite foods in an attempt to keep her physically healthy, but she could take only a few bites and then would be unable to finish.

On one particularly trying day, her husband attempted in vain to persuade her with foods she had always loved. When nothing worked, he said, “There must be something that sounds good to you.”

Tiffany thought for a moment and said, “The only thing I can think of that sounds good is homemade bread.”

But there was none on hand.

The following afternoon Tiffany’s doorbell rang. Her husband happened to be home and answered it. When he returned, he was carrying a loaf of homemade bread. Tiffany was astonished when he told her it had come from a woman named Sherrie, whom they barely knew. She was a friend of Tiffany’s sister Nicole and had been introduced to Tiffany and her husband briefly several months earlier when Nicole and her family were staying with Tiffany for Thanksgiving. Days later, Tiffany began to regain her appetite and feel hopeful about the future and she owed it to that loaf of bread from Sherrie.

Tiffany decided to visit Sherrie to express thanks.

Sherrie’s words revealed the reason why she delivered her bread and love to Tiffany.
