2 . The next time a giant Big Mac or Coke flashes into your mind when you’re walking home from the pub, you may not simply have the snacks.

A British hi-tech company has created a new advertising system that uses lasers (激光) to project images up to 200 metres tall from the sides of tall buildings, enabling advertisers to reach people from virtual billboards in the sky. Passers-by will see each image for only between one tenth and quarter of a second, as their eyes catch the light from certain angles.

Advertising agencies and big businesses have already signalled their interest, but Skyline campaigners have branded the technology “greedy” and said that it could fill our skies with showy and tasteless brands.

The Echo system uses a high laser projector to bounce light off a narrow reflective strip fixed to the side of a building, visible up to 1km away. This creates large-scale images that are captured briefly in the viewer’s eye as a result of the “persistence of vision” effect: the same effect that leaves an imprint (印记) of a light source on your vision after you’ve turned away.

Daniel Siden, the technology’s inventor, explained: People often think this could be subversive, but it’s actually less invasive and more fun than traditional advertising. Mr.Siden said that the system was safe because of the distance between the projector and passers-by. And images would be above the line of sight of drivers and cyclists and below the field of vision of airline pilot. The images have been tested and shown not to cause epileptic seizures (癫痫发作).

Because it uses only one strip of reflected light, the system needs a small amount of the power, about one-twentieth of a standard 96-sheet digital outdoor display for an image of the same height.

Still, some Skyline campaigners dislike the technology and believe it delivers subliminal advertising (隐形广告). Barbara Weiss of the Skyline Campaign, said: “It’s actually offensive. London’s latest tall buildings are not particularly well-built or well designed, but unfortunately people are forced to look at them. Adding stupid advertising that’s invasive in its nature will only make it worse.”

6 . Google’s new camera, called Clips, is a smart device. It comes with a case that has a clip (夹 子), but it’s not   designed to be worn   on   your   clothing. Most interestingly,   it uses   artificial intelligence to take photography out of your hands and captures moments entirely on its own!

What sets this roughly 2-inch by 2-inch camera, with a three-hour battery life and Gorilla Glass for toughness apart is that it is specially intended for candid moments, like when a child does something cute that may happen too quickly for you to pull out your smartphone.

The Clips device, it uses machine learning algorithms (   计 算 程 序 ) to help capture scenes. Those algorithms include face recognition. “Once it learns that there’s a face you see frequently, it’ll try to get nice photos of those faces,” said Juston Payne, the device’s product manager. And they also want it to recognize facial expressions, which involved “training it to know what happiness looks like”. The Google team also trained it to recognize what not to shoot—like when a child’s hand is over the lens, or if it is tossed in a dark purse.

The only way to see the images is by connecting the camera with your phone, as it has no screen for viewing or editing.

Concerned it could seem strange? Yes, Payne admitted, but he said they addressed that by making it obvious what it is. A green light on the front signals that it is on. Besides, unlike a camera meant to monitor your home, it is not connected to the Internet.

“This product is only possible because of the way that silicon(硅) has advanced,” Payne said that now they could squeeze the technology down into a device this size. Going forward, we’re likely to get more assistance from the artificial intelligence packed into our apps and gadgets.

1. What is the most outstanding feature of Clips?
A.It enables easy Internet access.
B.It is equipped with tough glass.
C.It can be worn on your clothing.
D.It allows of hands-free photography.
2. What does the underlined word “candid” in Paragraph 2 mean?
A.Awkward.B.Brief.
C.Touching.D.Unforgettable.

A.The advance in technology.
B.The popularity of the Internet.
C.The screen for viewing and editing.
D.The rise of the smartphone industry.
4. What does the text mainly talk about?
A.New gadgets in the age of apps.
B.Artificial intelligence in daily Life.

7 . Sports accounts for a growing amount of income made on the sales of commercial time by television companies. Many television companies have used sports to attract views from particular sections of the general public, and then they have sold audiences to advertisers.

An attraction of sports programs for the major U.S. media company is that events are often held on Saturday and Sunday afternoons — the slowest time periods of the week for general television viewing. Sport events are the most popular weekend programs, especially among male viewers who may not watch much television at other times during the week. This means the television networks are able to sell advertising time at relatively high prices during what normally would be dead time for programming. Media corporations also use sports to attract commercial sponsors that might take their advertising dollars elsewhere if television stations did not report certain sports. The people in the advertising departments of major corporations realize that sports attract male viewers. They also realize that most business travelers are men and that many men make family decisions on the purchases of computers, cars and life insurance.

Golf and tennis are special cases for television programming. These sports attract few viewers, and the ratings(收视率) are unusually low. However, the audience for these sports is attractive to certain advertisers. It is made up of people from the highest income groups in the United States, including many lawyers and business managers. This is why television reporting of golf and tennis is sponsored by companies selling high-priced cars, business and personal computers, and holiday trips. This is also why the networks continue to carry these programs regardless of low ratings. Advertisers are willing to pay high fees to reach high-income consumers and those managers who make decisions to buy thousands of “company cars” and computers. With such viewers, these programs don’t need high ratings to stay on the air.

1. Why would weekend afternoons become dead time without sport programs?
A.Because there would be few viewers
B.Because the advertisers would be off work.
C.Because television programs would go slowly.
D.Because viewers would pay less for watching television.
2. In many families, men make decisions on _________.
A.holiday tripsB.sports viewing
C.television shoppingD.expensive purchases
3. Why are the ratings not important for golf and tennis programs?
A.their advertisers are carmakers
B.their viewers are attracted by sports
C.their advertisers target at rich people.
D.their viewers can afford expensive cars
4. What is the passage mainly about?
A.Television ratings are determined by male viewers.
B.Rich viewers contribute most to television companies.
C.Sports are gaining importance in advertising on television.
D.Commercial advertisers are the major sponsors of sport events.

8 . Rome, Paris and New York are the world’s top fashion cities, all of which have produced some of the top trends, from fashionable skirts to the hottest new shoes. But have you ever wondered about the negative ideas that they have enforced?

In April 2016, the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) in Britain banned an ad from Gucci that featured models dancing around and having fun, because they were all extremely skinny. Banning ads due to the models’ extreme figures isn’t new. The ASA banned an ad in 2015 for the same reason. In France, it has been ruled that models are to provide a doctor’s no providing that they are at a healthy weight.

So what is the healthy weight for models? Twenty years ago, the average fashion model weighed 8% less than the average woman. Today, they weigh 23 less.

People may think that being at an unhealthy weight will help them gain the benefits that the models do. This provides a standard of beauty, and therefore people who want to achieve those things may attempt to obtain them through unhealthy ways. People may think that they are overweight, due to the images of models’ thin figures. They see something wrong with their bodies whether they are overweight or not. This is a key factor in a lowered body image, low self-esteem, depression and possibly even eating disorders.

I’m not blaming the fashion industry by any means. It’s not their fault that many people look up to the models and expect to live a life like theirs. I am glad that the ASA is raising its voices when discussing the growing issue of body images in the fashion industry. By banning photos and videos, speaking out against them and pushing for doctor’s notes from the models, it’s pushing for the ideas that the traditional fashion industry’s body image demands should be changed and something more needs to be questioned.

1. According to the text, why was one of Gucci’s ads banned?
A.Because the models didn’t act according to the rule
B.Because its models are much too thin.
C.Because none of its models had a doctor’s note
D.Because its models were dancing in an unhealthy way
2. We can infer from the numbers mentioned in paragraph 3 that       .
A.many women on a diet to become models
B.people don’t know why models weigh less
C.models are becoming thinner with time going by
D.the healthy weight for models hasn’t been decided .
3. What does the fourth paragraph mainly show?
A.The changes in the standard of beautyB.The benefits of becoming thin figures.
C.The negative effects of models imagesD.people’s attitudes towards models’ images
4. What is the author’s tone of writing this passage?
A.ObjectiveB.Hopeful.
C.Critical.D.Humorous.

9 . Making an advertisement for television often costs more than a movie. For example, a two – hour movie costs $6 million to make. A TV commercial can cost more than $6 000 a second. And that does not include cost of paying for air time. Which is more valuable, the program or the ad? In terms of money – and making money is what television is all about – the commercial is by far the more important.
Research, market testing, talent, time and money —— all come together to make us want to buy a product.
No matter how bad we think a commercial is, it works. The sales of Charm went up once the ads began. TV commercials actually buy their way into our head. We, in turn, buy the product.
And the ads work because so much time and attention are given to them. Here are some rules of commercial ad making. If you want to get the low middle – class buyer, make sure the announcer has a though, manly voice. Put some people in the ad who work with their hands. If you want to sell to upper – class audience, make sure that the house,   the furniture, and the hair style are the types that the group identifies   with. If you want the buyer feel superior to the character selling the product, then make that person so stupid or silly that everyone will feel great about himself or herself.
We laugh at commercials. We don’t think we pay that much attention to them. But evidence shows we are kidding ourselves. The making of a commercial that costs so much money is not kid stuff. It’s big, big business. And it’s telling us what to think , what we need, and what to buy. To put simply, the TV commercial is a form of brainwashing.

3. From the rules set for making commercial ads, we can see that         .
A.the lower – middle – class buyer likes to work with his hand
B.the more stupid the characters, the more buyers of the product
C.ad designers attract different people with different skills
D.an upper – class buyer is only interested in houses and furniture
4. It is believed by the writer that         .
A.few people like to watch TV commercials
B.TV commercials are a good guide to buyers
C.TV commercials often make people laugh
D.people do not think highly of TV commercials

B.Commercials are used to show the true value of a product to be sold.
C.TV commercials cost much and they do influence us in one way or another.
D.Brainwashing must be introduced to sell something on TV.
