Chair Transformation Number 20B, made in 1996 — by Lucas Samaras

Here, Samaras explores the double meaning of “flight”, referring to both the starlike form created by the stacked chairs, and the movement of a single chair moving through space. From different viewpoints, the sculpture appears to be upright, leaning back, or springing forward. From the side, it even appears like a zigzagging (之字形的) line.

Typewriter Eraser, Scale X, made in 1998 — by Coosje van Bruggen

The artist chose the typewriter eraser as his model for this work based upon childhood memories of playing with the object in his father’s office. Here the brush arcs (作弧形运动) back, conveying a sense of motion, as if the wheel­like eraser were rolling down the hill and making its way towards the gate of the garden.

Moondog, model 1974, made in 19981999 — by Tony Smith

The title itself comes from two sources: Moondog was the name of a blind poet and folk musician who lived in New York City, and Smith has also compared this sculpture to Dog Barking at the Moon, a painting by Joan Miro. He first created Moondog in 1974 as a 33­inch cardboard model and cast it in bronze as a garden sculpture in 1980. This version was designed by Smith, but it was not completed until after his death.

Cheval Rouge (Red Horse), made in 1964 — by Alexander Calder

During the last two decades of his life, Alexander Calder devoted his greatest efforts to large­scale mobiles and stabiles (立式抽象派雕塑), many of which have become popular public landmarks in cities around the world. Here the silky legs and tensile (张力的) up­thrust “neck” recall the power of a horse. This stabile reflects Calder's statement: “I want to make things that are fun to look at.”

7 . The two-week Harvard Pre-College Program is an intense and exciting experience of the college life. The admission committee is now looking for mature, academically motivated students who will graduate from high school and enter college in 2022.

The Course Experience

With over 30 courses to choose from, you’re sure to find a topic that interests you. Although courses are non-credit and do not have letter grades, you need to attend the class in its entirety. When class is not in session, you can participate in creative and social activities. At the end of the program, you’ll receive a written evaluation from your instructor, as well as a transcript (成绩单).

Complete an online application and provide supplemental (补充的) materials, including:

·The $75 non-refundable application fee.

·Transcripts from 9th grade to fall 2021 grades: This can include progress reports, report cards, and educational summaries from your high school

·If English is not your native language, submit scores from the TOEFL IBT or IELTS language proficiency exam along with your application.

Cost & Aid

The total fee for a Harvard Pre-College Program 2022 session is $4,950. The program fee includes tuition, room and board, and activity costs for the full two weeks. There is also a non-refundable $75 application fee and $100 health insurance.

A limited number of scholarships are available to assist students who demonstrate financial need. Awards vary based on need, and atypical award covers part of the tuition.

8 . The goal of the “clean ＆ Green” home recycling initiative (倡议) is to assist households in reducing their environmental footprint by providing step-by-step instructions on effective recycling practices.

Understanding Recycling Types

Plastics: These include bottles, containers and other packaging materials. Always clean plastics before recycling to avoid pollution.

paper: Newspapers, magazines, and cardboard are recyclable. However, soiled or wet paper should be discarded as regular waste.

Glass: Bottles and jars of all colors can be recycled. Ensure they are free of food waste.

Metals: Common recyclables are aluminum cans and tin foil (锡纸). Remove any food waste before disposal.

Steps for Effective Home Recycling

Collection: Use separate bins for each type. Mark containers to avoid confusion.

Preparation: As mentioned above, clean the items. This prevents waste and increases the recyclability of the materials.

Storage: Avoid overfilling recycling bins. Overpacked bins might lead to improper sorting at recycling facilities.

Drop-off: If your city doesn’t offer roadside pickup locate your nearest recycling drop-off point.

Stay Informed: Recycling guidelines can change. Regularly check city websites for “clean ＆ Green” updates.

The best­selling biographer of Steve Jobs and Albert Einstein researched deeply into Da Vinci’s contributions beyond art, highlighting the breadth of his scientific, technological, and creative output.

The Best We Could Do: An Illustrated Memoir, by Thi Bui

Gates called this graphic novel “really impressive”. Bui is the daughter of Vietnamese refugees who came to America after the fall of Saigon and becoming a parent inspired her to look into her own parents’ miserable history.

Lincoln in the Bardo, by George Saunders

Saunders, a long­time short story writer, won high praise for this novel. The book imagines the ghosts that haunt (出没于) the basement of Willie Lincoln, Abraham Lincoln’s son, who died at 11 in real life. “Willie’s death after the Civil War made the president have a new understanding of the grief he’s creating in other families by sending their sons off to die in battle,” said Gates.

Origin Story: A Big History of Everything, by David Christian

This new book is by the creator of Big History, a free, online social studies’ course. It traces history in wide, sweeping movements, starting with the Big Bang, and it provides, in effect, a short course in modern science. This is a brief history of the universe.
