1 . The British Museum's rich collection of ancient Chinese paintings has attracted many visitors. At the heart of this preservation and revival of Chinese art history is senior conservator (文物修复员) Qiu Jinxian.

Joanna Kosek, head of Pictorial Art Conservation at the British Museum, told the Times Publications that Qiu is considered one of the museum's most priceless treasures. "We let the treasure treat the treasure," Kosek said.

In 1987, Qiu was introduced to Mrs. Jessica Rawson, director of the British Museum. At the time there were no conservators specializing in ancient Chinese art at the British Museum. The large collection of Chinese ancient paintings and cultural relics in the museum was mainly repaired by Japanese and British methods and materials. As these methods were not suitable for Chinese paintings, the art collection was kept in storage for a long time instead of on pubic display.

Just before Christmas in 1987, Qiu Jinxian had her first appointment at the British Museum. She was asked to repair an ancient scroll (卷轴) by Fu Baoshi, which had been badly damaged by fire. Qiu's methods, which included washing with warm water to separate the glue in order to repair the paper, stunned people on the spot. Some of them even got out the camera to record her methods as they'd never seen this way of restoring ancient art. Mrs. Rawson was completely amazed by Qiu Jinxian's incredible skills. She immediately invited Qiu to join the British Museum.

Chinese ancient paintings are notoriously difficult to repair because of their large size, complex materials, diverse colors, and rich composition. The most important thing is to understand the long history, meaning and culture behind the painting. Repair is an extremely time-and-energy intensive process. Each painting normally takes several months from cleaning to restoration and drying. Since 1987, Qiu has repaired more than 400 artworks.

Oiu told the media that she is very proud of her work. She wants more people to understand and appreciate Chinese history and culture through art. Although the artworks originated from China, they now belong to the people of the world.

文章大意:本文是一篇记叙文,主要讲述了“现代舞之母”伊莎多拉·邓肯对现代舞的影响。

3 . Isadora Duncan is considered by many to be the progenitor of modern dance. To Duncan, classical ballet, with its strict rules of posture and formation, was “ugly and against nature”. She refused to accept traditional ballet steps, preferring to emphasize improvisation(即兴创作), emotion, and the human form. She said, “I spent long days and nights in the studio seeking that dance which might be the expression of the human spirit through the body’s movements.” By making connections between human emotion and the movements of dance, Duncan hoped to make dance a form of high art rather than simple entertainment. She developed free and natural movements inspired by the classical Greek arts, folk dances, social dances and natural forces. She drew on a number of sports moves, including skipping, running, jumping, leaping, and tossing. The athleticism and classical roots of her style are reflected in her innovative costume choice of a Grecian tunic(束腰外衣) and bare feet, which allowed for a physical freedom that could not be achieved in the traditional ballet costumes and pointed shoes that limited dancers. With time, she gained a very wide following and set up several schools in Europe and the United States.

Duncan’s fame, however, did not bring her wealth. In the later years of her life, her financial situation worsened, and finally she had to live in apartments rented by friends and supporters. Duncan also received criticism for some of her personal opinions.

In spite of the problems, Duncan is remembered today for her artistic achievements: the creation of modern dance and its high place among the arts. While Duncan’s own schools no longer exist, her style of dance continues to be practiced. Her life inspired novels, ballets, and films, and her likeness was included in the sculpture created by Antoine Bourdelle over the entrance of the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées.

1. What does the underlined word “progenitor” Paragraph 1 probably mean?
A.Sponsor.B.Originator.C.Instructor.D.Competitor.

A.To explore the connection between art and wealth.

5 . When Simon Beck creates artwork, he doesn’t use paint or pencils. Instead, he takes his snowshoes and compass (指南针) and walks to a wide-open area of fresh snow, making huge designs in the snow by walking and leaving snowshoed footprints in different patterns.

The idea to make a snow mural (壁画) came to him in 2004 after a day of skiing in Savoie, France. Mr. Beck noticed an inviting area of undisturbed snow and thought it would be fun to draw a star in it. Being a mapmaker and an expert at orienteering (定向越野赛), Mr. Beck was good with these skills to create in the snow.

Once he got to his site, he started in the center of the design. He then “drew” the primary lines while holding his compass to make sure he kept walking straight. Next, he added smaller lines, keeping track of their length by counting his footsteps. Finally, he filled in, or “shade”, some of the areas between the lines with more footsteps. The result looked impressive, especially when he viewed it from above on a nearby chairlift.

On average, a snow design takes Mr. Beck 10 hours to make. So far, Beck has created over 300 snow murals—the size of the biggest one is about 10 soccer fields. As Mr. Beck worked to build a collection of photos to publish in his book Snow Art, he posted some of his pictures on the Internet. His art started to gain more attention and companies began asking him to create snow artwork. Mr. Beck has been invited to make snow art all over the world, including Canada, the United States, Russia, and China.

It doesn’t worry Mr. Beck that his work will disappear with the next snowfall. Once he has photographed a design, he’s ready to think about the next one. “I can make another drawing in the same place when the weather improves,” he says.

6 . What would you do if you spilled your coffee on your desk? Many of us would probably immediately begin cleaning up the desk. But some people are so talented that they can be artistically inspired by the most unexpected of things, such as spilled drinks. And that’s how her journey into coffee art began. She got better and better at it, and today Giulia is regarded as one of the world’s best coffee artists.

As for the things Giulia draws with coffee, she takes inspiration from a variety of things, such as famous artworks, architecture, or the human body. So the next time you spill your coffee or something else, don’t immediately clean it up. It’s your chance to be an artist too!

7 . Born in 1921, Paul Smith was diagnosed with a severe disease that affects motor abilities and strength. Since he could not grasp the artist’s tools, his creations turned to the typewriter.

His works include his childhood fascination with trains, spiritual leaders, war scenes and country heroes. It’s not so much the subject that is remarkable about Paul’s work, it’s the painstaking skill of using symbols on a typewriter to form perfect copy of existing work, and creative representations of his surroundings.

Paul’s images employed only a handful of symbol keys - !, @, ≠≠, %, ∧, (, &, ) — which were accessible along the top row of his typewriter keyboard. Remarkable, when a person considers that hand typewriters required the ribbons to be positioned, the roller to be adjusted, and the paper to be secured. Typewriters, of that time, left no room for error since erasing mistaken keystrokes was not a clean option.

As he typed, he would lock the shift key in a safe position not to type numbers. He used his left hand to steady his right. Different symbols created the look of varied textures (神韵), and depending on the look to achieve, he would adjust the spacing to type the symbols near or far. And, he adjusted the roller to perfect spaces between lines.

Depending on its size and complexity, it could take anywhere from two weeks to three months to complete one piece. He worked, on average, a couple of hours every day on his art. After all of that work, one wouldn’t blame Paul if he sought to sell his work, but by all accounts, he would give away his pieces. As his distinctive art form gained interest from others, the number of orders for his artwork increased.

In 2007 the world lost Paul Smith at the age of 85. For this American, creating art was a leisurely pursuit and a form of expression. To the art world, he set a high bar for typewriter artists that many have tried to match, but few are able to repeat it.

1. What do we know about the tool Paul Smith worked with?
A.It has only symbol keys.B.It requires ribbons and a roller.
C.It is specially made for him.D.The spacing is not adjustable.
2. What did Paul Smith have to do to work out his production?
A.Lock the shift key.B.Erase mistakes neatly.
C.Steady all the symbols.D.Adjust the keys precisely.
3. Which of the following can best describe Paul Smith’s works?
A.Primitive.B.Sensitive.
C.Innovative.D.Time efficient.
4. What can we learn from Paul Smith’s story?
A.Art comes from life.B.Efforts work wonders.
C.Patience is a virtue.D.Technique does count.

文章大意:这是一篇应用文。文章主要介绍四个爵士音乐家。

10 . This was going to be a year of great jazz centennials (百年纪念) for 1920 marked the birth of several jazz musicians who either changed the course of the music or deeply enriched it. So let’s raise a glass to some of them:

Charlie Parker(August 29, 1920-March 12, 1955)

Of all the jazz languages that coursed through the 20th century, no one did more than Parker, for he developed complex improvisational methods that transformed the way musicians understand harmony and dissonance. The fact that Parker also happened to be a most influential saxophone player broadened the scope of his achievements.

Dave Brubeck (December 6, 1920-December 5, 2012)

Early in his long career, pianist-composer Brubeck was laughed at by some jazz lovers. How could a musician so popular among the masses possibly have anything to offer those who considered themselves “masters”? The joke was on them, of course, as Brubeck’s music was filled with new ideas in rhythm, embracing elements of Western classical music. No one played the piano quite the way Brubeck did.

Clark Terry(December 14, 1920-February 21, 2015)

Some musicians are at least as important for the influence they have on others as for the music they create themselves. Trumpet masters such as Miles Davis have credited Terry for having encouraged them in the earliest days of their careers. Terry’s work on trumpet affected those trumpeters and uncounted others.

Peggy Lee(May 26, 1920-January 21, 2002)

Singer-songwriter Lee proved that a vocalist needn’t shout to be heard around the world. Her soft vocals delighted jazz devotees and brought the music to huge audiences across the decades, thanks to hit recordings such as “Fever” and “Is That All There Is?” There were no vocal skills involved. Instead, Lee taught the jazz world the beauty of saying everything with a few well-chosen notes.

1. Who changed the way musicians understand harmony and dissonance?
A.Charlie Parker.B.Dave Brubeck.C.Clark Terry.D.Peggy Lee.
2. Why was Brubeck looked down upon by “masters”?
A.He played music for a longer time.B.They didn’t recognize his excellence.
C.He played the piano in a traditional way.D.They had nothing to learn from him.
3. What is special about Peggy Lee?
A.Her unique piano playing.B.Her great influence on others.
C.Her beautiful singing voice.D.Her mixture of western music.
