5 . The 71st annual Boston Marathon was held on April 19, 1967. This day was filled with freezing rain, snow and strong winds. However, for one runner named Kathrine Switzer, the weather conditions were the least of her worries. Kathrine was the first and only registered female runner in the marathon and she wanted to prove (证明) something.
The first few miles were a piece of cake for Kathrine. Then around mile four, she realized someone was going after her. She turned around and was startled to see an angry face just inches away. It was the race director (赛事总监), Jock Semple.
“Get out of my race and give me those numbers!” Jock shouted. As he said this, he caught hold of Kathrine’s arm and tried pulling her race numbers off her sweatshirt. Although Kathrine was so shocked and terrified, she struggled to break free.
Kathrine felt awful. She thought about quitting, but soon she knew that wasn’t a choice. “If I quit, nobody would ever believe that women had the ability to run 26-plus miles. If I quit, everybody would say it was a show. If I quit, it would set women’s sports back, way back, instead of forward.”
While all this thinking was going on, Kathrine continued, until she found herself nearing the finish line. Although several reporters were waiting there, none of them cheered. Kathrine completed the race in a time of 4 hours and 20 minutes. The race was over, but her determination to change was just beginning.
She played a major part in getting women officially accepted into the Boston marathon in 1972. Her effort also opened up marathon in Olympic Games for women. Her number 261 on that historic day in Boston has also become a symbol of fearlessness for millions of women worldwide.

8 . Debinha means “little Debs” in Portuguese (葡萄牙语) and she’s 1.57 metres tall. But she has no intention of getting too big for her football shoes. “Never go above someone else.” is her philosophy (人生哲学). Instead, she says, it’s better to be a mirror for someone else, and to always be learning from your teammates in whatever you choose to do. After all, she says, “I didn’t get here alone.”
From street football in a provincial town in southeast Brazil to one of the stars of the US National Women’s Soccer League and a mainstay of the Brazilian women’s team, Debinha, 31, has come a long way. She has appeared for her country more than 130 times and in 2022 was shortlisted for the Best FIFA Women’s Player award, the only South American to be nominated (提名). In addition to Brazilian clubs, she has played for teams in Norway and China, and is now with the Kansas City Current in the US. The greatest moment of her career so far has been standing for Brazil in the 2016 Olympic Games, when they were held in her home nation. This summer she was working hard for her second World Cup.
“I always liked to play ball,” says Debinha, who first started playing it at eight in the square outside the candy factory where her mother worked in their home town of Brasópolis. If she wasn’t playing in the street, she was taking extra physical, education classes after school. Her mother always supported her. “Today, as always, my mother is my number one fan. 9 . Five years ago, Chinese skater Wu Dajing introduced himself to the skating world by winning a silver medal at the Sochi Olympic Winter Games. At Pyeong Chang Olympics, Wu not only returned, but also made history.
On Feb 22th, 2018, Wu won the gold medal in the men’s short-track 500-metre race. He set a new world record with a time of 39.584 seconds. He also became the first Chinese man to take home an Olympic short-track gold medal. BBC said Wu’s win was “flawless”, because he was much faster than all of the other skaters.
“I didn’t give them a chance and I kept my speed from the start,” he told the media after the match.
But China’s short-track teams didn’t do well in general at the Games. Chinese skaters in the women’s 500 metres, 3000-metre relay and men’s 1500 metres all failed to take home the gold. Wu was China’s biggest hope, which put a lot of pressure on him. But he proved himself with his great performance.
Wu is now known as a highly talented skater. But things were not always that way. When Wu joined the national team in 2010, he was seen as almost “nothing” compared to gifted skaters like Zhou Yang and Fan Kexin, as his coaches said at the time. Their comments made him quite upset. But as the saying goes. “Winners never quit (放弃) and quitters never win”. Wu didn’t want to give up and worked as hard as he could. He practiced skating all year round. He even didn’t return to his hometown for the holidays for 10 years. “I believe in myself.” he told the media after his match at the Olympics.
