“World record broken!” On Aug 12, 2022, 17-year-old Ma Jiajun from Jilin excitedly posted    1     (he) certificate (证书) on social media, with a picture of him from Guinness World Records.

He has set a new world record for “the most consecutive jump rope triples (连续三摇跳绳)” with 701 times. Ma is more than 180 centimeters tall, but he used to be short and thin in primary school.     2     (build) a stronger body, he took part     3     the school’s jump rope team. At 9, he competed in a national game and     4     (successful) broke a record. “My coach said I have a talent in this sport and suggested that I should keep doing it,” said Ma. So he joined a jump rope club and kept training for six     5     (year).

“The training was much     6     (hard). I needed to practice every day for at least four to fivehours,” Ma said. “The jump rope triple has a high standard for physical ability. Every night     7    I lay on my bed, my arm and back were in pain.” But     8     kind of strong wish to break the record keeps him going. “My favorite TV show is Guinness China Night (《吉尼斯中国之夜》). I always dreamed of     9     (get) a certificate of my own,” he said

After breaking the record, Ma     10     (catch) lots of attention from the public and said “I hope more people could enjoy jump rope, since it’s good for your health and full of fun.”

Sixth-grader Zoey York is fast becoming famous in the sporting world of Brazilian jiu-jitsu (柔术), winning national competitions and earning lots of honors.

In September 2020, when Zoey was 10, her brother took a jiu-jitsu class just     1     fun. “I tried it myself and immediately (立刻)     2     (fall) in love with it,” Zoey recalled. “Since then, I have been     3     great fan of it and I enjoy it more than any other sport I've ever done.”

In the gym where Zoey trains, she is     4     (physical) larger and stronger than most other kids her age. This means she often takes classes and trains with adults,     5     has helped improve her skills. In 2021, Zoey competed in the jiu-jitsu national championship competition and placed third. Right now, she     6     (train) hard for her first international contest to be held next July.

“I couldn’t ask for a     7     (good) student than Zoey to work with,” said her coach Malachi Moore. “She is always strict with     8     (she). She trains very hard and does everything you could ask a student     9     (do). And to stay in good shape, she always eats a     10     (balance) diet. She is able to pick up the basics really quick and I am proud of her.”

Volleyball star Zhu Ting,     1    is the captain of the Chinese women’s volleyball team, makes     2    to Top 10 of Chinese sports stars. The 27-year-old     3    (award) the most valuable player during China’s run to Olympic gold at the Rio 2016 Games.

But she wants to leave a legacy (遗产)     4    (big) than just being a well-known name to sports fans. “There has never been a ‘best player’,”she said. “Only a better one.”

Even on the court, Zhu says her “captain” label doesn’t apply and she is just one of the squad (运动队) members. “Being the captain is just an idea to the public, but within the team, I’m not really ‘leading’ my     5    (teammate). They don’t call me captain and they call me Zhu.”

She has told China Central Television that she aims     6    (compete) in three Olympics.

Olympic record-setting Chinese teen Quan Hongchan collected gold in the synchronized 10m platform (双人10米跳台) event alongside her partner Chen Yuxi, at     1     Hangzhou Olympic Sports Centre on Saturday. The duo (二人组) racked up a total 375.30 points — 85.26 points more than the Japanese silver medalists. In fact, the two teens     2     (win) all major titles in the women’s 10m platform events over the last three years.

Quan was born in a small village of Zhanjiang, Guangdong, in 2007 and took up     3     (dive) at age 7. She     4     (encourage) to try the sport because of the agility (灵活) she showed while jumping when she played hopscotch (跳房子游戏) at school.

“I’d never tried any other sports before,     5     I enjoyed playing in the water,” she recalled. “From the very start, I could jump into the water     6     fear or hesitation.” The young diver is said to have initially (最初) taken up the sport to earn money     7     (support) her mother, who has an illness that requires constant care.

Journalists from around the world lined up for two hours to ask her questions. Her short and simple answers won     8     (smile) and sometimes laughs. Her longest response came when she was asked why she was carrying a toy turtle,     9     has been a hot topic at the Asiad, “Because I like it. Turtles are not good-looking, but they’re     10     (love)! I like them!”

10 . Skiing has always been a big part of Mikaela Shiffrin’s life. Her dad ski raced all through college and her mom raced and coached skiing. The Shiffrins taught Mikaela and her brother, Taylor, to ski at a very young age. At two and a half years old, Mikaela made her first ski run down her driveway on plastic skis.

Mikaela loved skiing. From ages 8 to 11, she did hundreds of training runs on small hills to learn the skills of slalom skiing (障碍滑雪). When Mikaela was 11, she began to learn at the Burke Mountain Academy, a Vermont boarding school for skiers. She took classes, studied, and practiced her skiing. According to Burke Mountain Academy headmaster Kirk Dwyer, “What separated Mikaela from others was the degree of her commitment (投入) to be the best. Mikaela practiced more than anyone and believed in herself then and now.” At age 14, Mikaela began her international career when she raced in the world championships for 13- and 14-year-olds. And she won!

By the time she was 17, she had already won her first World Cup race. “Living away from home four and five months at a time can be difficult,” Mikaela says. “But it can also be exciting. I’m getting to see the world.” When Mikaela began ski racing in Europe, her mother, Eileen, stayed with her. She worked as her high-school teacher while they were on the road. “She has always been a super-hard worker,” says Eileen.

For Mikaela, working hard is a full-time job. Even her off-season is work time. “If you want something, just try your best,” she says. At the 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia, 18-year-old Mikaela Shiffrin became the youngest slalom skier ever to win an Olympic gold medal.
