1 . Tom Brady, a Californian, was an excellent quarterback(四分卫)at Junipero Serra High School. But when he arrived at the University of Michigan, he didn’t see much playing time during his first three years on campus. He considered going back to a college in California, but he decided to stick it out. He didn’t become a starter until the second half of his senior year. After becoming a National Football League(NFL)player, he was not allowed to play as a starter. However, he kept improving his skills and preparing each week like he was the starter.

In 200l, his second season, he only got in on the act because the starter was injured. Fans though Tom would be just a fill-in. But Tom led his team New England Patriots to a victory in his first start, then they won four of five, and then finished the year with six victories. Each week he seemed to get a little better, and people began to recognize him as a dark horse. New England Patriots got into the Super Bowl, fighting against the defending(卫冕的)champions St.Louis Rams. Tom led a final-minute game-winning drive. He was no longer a nobody.

Today, Brady is considered perhaps the greatest quarterback ever. He’d become a superstar. Yet he had never lost that fire, that drive, and that sense that the world didn’t believe in him. At 37, he said that he would play until fifty if his body allowed him to do so. And he even told his teammates that he wanted to play forever if possible.

His teammates had dreamed of being him. Hogan was thirteen in February of 2002 when Brady and New England Patriots beat St.Louis Rams. Lengel was eleven at the time, watching with his grandfather in Kentucky. White was ten in Florida. Mitchell was nine in Georgia. These teammates were Tom’s big fans who since childhood had viewed from TV how he did the impossible. “He gave us the encouragement,” Hogan said.

He kept telling his teammates to keep going when the game wasn’t over. He isn’t the biggest, the fastest, and the strongest football player in the world. But he may be the most strong-minded.

6 . Kobe Bryant

After 10 seasons wearing the No. 8 on his back, Kobe Bryant will become No. 24 next season. The reason for the surprising decision by the Los Angeles Lakers super guard last week has become a hot topic for debate.

Bryant wore No. 8 when he was in early high school, but he changed to No. 33 in his senior year. He switched to No. 8 when he was selected by the Lakers in 1996, and has been not changed since.

Bryant has refused to explain the decision until the end of the play-offs. So guessing Bryant’s motive has become a popular game among NBA fans and newspaper columnists.

There are all kinds of speculations. Many say that Bryant wants to leave the past behind and have a fresh start. He has often been criticized for playing to benefit himself and not the team as a whole. Others say that he may be trying to compare himself to Michael Jordan. Jordan was famous for his No. 23 jersey. Some, such as NBC Sport columnist Michael Ventre, argue that it is “all about money”. Bryant will make more money by selling new jersey to his fans.

Some speculations are more about fun. For example, there is an opinion that Kobe is actually just a dihard fan of the popular TV drama “24”.

All this talk has turned the number changed into a major issue. It seems that there is a lot of fuss over something that should be pretty simple.

Jersey numbers have their own special significance in American sports, especially basketball. Players choose their number when they join a team and they usually stick with that number for the rest of their career. When a great player retires, his team will honor him by retiring his number.

To some extent, the jersey is the player, and the player is jersey. Thus, when you see the famous No. 23 for the Chicago Bulls, you immediately think about Michael Jordan. A No. 32 Miami Heats jersey recalls the image of Shaquille O’ Neal, and the Houston rockets’ No. 11 belongs only to Yao Ming.

Lots of stories are behind players’ jersey number selections. Jordan said that he chose No. 23 because it was roughly half of 45. Jordan’s elder brother wore the No. 45 in college. Yao Ming once revealed that the No. 11 stands for two people in love—meaning him and his girlfriend Ye Li.

1. Which team has Bryant played for?
A.The Los Angels Lakers.B.The Houston rockets.
C.The Chicago Bulls.D.The Miami Heats.
2. How long has Bryant Wore No. 8?
A.For two years and a half.B.For ten years.
C.Since he entered high school.D.Since he left high school.
3. Which of the following is NOT a speculation about Bryant’s motive to change his number?
A.He wants to leave his past behind and have a fresh start.
B.He wants to compare himself to Jordan.
C.He wants to earn more money.
D.He wants to show that he is man of great importance.
4. Why did Jordan choose No. 23?
A.Because that number would make him famous.
B.Because that number will make you miss him.
C.Because that number was related to the number his brother once wore.
D.Because that number was easy to remember.

Not only is Quan the youngest     1     (compete) in the women's diving field, but also she's the youngest of 431 athletes     2     China sent to Tokyo for the Olympics.   Had the Games gone on as scheduled last summer, she would have been too young     3     (meet) the minimum age (14) to compete in the diving competition. Now, she's made Olympic history.

Each of Quan's dives was the highest of the five rounds of competition at the 10-meter platform. Two scored perfect 10s from all seven     4     (judge). 8 . Age Is No Barrier to Sporting Passion

One of the most touching moments of the Tokyo Games this summer was entirely spontaneous. During the qualifying round of the women's gymnastics, 46-year-old Oksana Chusovitina took to the podium in her 8th Olympics as she attempted to qualify for the vault finals one last time. Chusovitina, who won her finals world championship golds in 1991 and took an Olympic team gold in 1992, had previously announced that Tokyo would mark the end of her illustrious career.

Chusovitina finished 14th in the vault competition that day, missing the final after two fine but flawed vaults.     1     Across the floor, all the other gymnasts gave Chusovitina a standing ovation, a gesture that moved her to tears.

Even as she convincingly explained her intention to move on from the sport and to devote more time to her son, Alisher, she has always been terrible at retiring. She had indicated that she would retire after the 2009 World Championships, aged 34.     2     Each time Chusovitina has considered retirement, her sheer passion for the sport and tireless motivation has won out.

3     When she posted a video of herself working through an uneven bars routine with no grips, the jokes about “unretirement” began.     4     Chusovitina explained that she left Tokyo unsatisfied by her result and determined to finish her career on a high: “I really want to end my career with a medal for Uzbekistan,” she said to Sputnik. “It will not be the Olympic Games, but the Asian ones, but I really want it. When my heart asks, I have to do it.”

A.It has done so again.
B.Luck, however, has not been on her side so far.
C.Three years later, she set London 2012 as the end point.
D.The turbulent past few years could have shattered Chusovitina's confidence but her commitment is admirable.
E.Instead of an audience at the empty Ariake Gymnastics Centre to send her off, her fellow competitors unexpectedly took charge.
F.Last Thursday, within eight weeks of the Olympics ending, Chusovitina announced that she would continue to train with her eyes set on the 2022 Asian Games next September.

9 . Directions: Complete the following passage by using the words in the box. Each word can only be used once. Do note that there is one word more than you need.
Cristiano Ronaldo scored a dramatic late winner for Man Utd vs Villarreal
A. priceless       B. hesitantly       C. collection       D. inevitable       AB. debut       AC. secure
AD. deliver       BC. intensity       BD. packed       CD. sharply       ABC. overshadowed

Against Villarreal on Wednesday evening, the Portuguese superstar added to his record     1     by becoming the player with the most appearances in the competition’s history. And in his 178th game in Europe’s top-tier competition, Ronaldo scored his 136th goal to     2     a 2-1 win for Manchester United versus Villarreal in Group F.

It was a 95th-minute winner as well, one which sent the fans inside a(n)     3     Old Trafford Stadium absolutely wild. Ronaldo reacted     4     inside the Villarreal penalty area after good work from Jesse Lingard and fired the ball home from a tight angle to seal an undeserved -- yet     5     -- victory for United.

He is almost     6     in the Champions League (欧冠联赛), isn’t he? According to ESPN, that goal is Ronaldo’s 12th in the competition in the 90th-minute or later and that is twice as many as the man, Lionel Messi, with the second-most.

This summer the news Ronaldo was set to make a long-awaited return to United after a long 12 years absence massively     7     the fact that he was still the top scorer in Serie A (意甲联赛) last season. Before the new season began, many critics thought the transfer was made more out of financial concern and even doubted if Ronaldo could get used to the high     8     of the Premier League (英超联赛) at the age of .

However, Ronaldo’s dramatic strike versus Villarreal was his fifth goal in five games since returning to United from Juventus in the summer. The five-time Ballon d’Or (金球奖) winner netted a brace (梅开二度) against Newcastle on his second     9     for the club and found the back of the net against both West Ham and Young Boys.

With five goals in five games (across all competitions) this term, the No. 7 currently looks set to     10     yet another world-class individual season. As for his team, the Red Devils struggled for pretty much the entirety of the match versus Villarreal and were lucky to come away with a victory. So in their next two Champions League matches against Atalanta, United will have to improve considerably if they want to advance from Group stage this season.
