Desire, mental strength and willpower as strong as those of anyone who has ever played the game, that's what got Novak Djokovic over the line as he defeated his Austrian challenger, Dominic Thiem, on February 2 to win his eighth Australian Open crown. With the victory: Djokovic has brought his overall Grand Slam(大满贯) tally to 17.
“I'm blessed to hold this trophy once again,” Djokovic told the crowd after he extended his perfect record of winning all eight of his Australian Open finals, a win that helped him return to the world ranking of No.1.
Djokovic is the first man in the Open era and just the second (the other is Australian Ken Rosewall) to win a Grand Slam title in three different decades. When he won the title in Melbourne 12 months ago, Djokovic's first promise was that he would try everything to chase down Federer's Grand Slam record of 20. Having defeated Thiem, he will go to the French Open in May with the renewed belief that he can overtake both Federer and Nadal.
“It is my goal to win as many Grand Slam titles as possible at this stage in my career; that is what matters to me,” Djokovic said. “I would definitely want to play for many more years, focusing mostly on the Grand Slam tournaments. In order to have a chance for the historic No. 1, I am going to do everything possible this season and next season. That's what I can devote to this goal.”

It was still rather young and flexible back then, so it easily welcomed the new structure into its path. It bent and adjusted itself to make room, and to find the space to grow big and strong and wise, which means that some hundred years later, the solid, strong branches of the tree reach around two full sides of my home. It’s covered in moss(苔藓), which is, in turn, crawling with all sorts of insects. I have never seen the insects, by the way, I just know that they’re there because of all the birds trying to pick them out. They are always hopping around, looking for this and that and singing songs.
I feel like I have become part of the ecosystem. When I’m eating breakfast or making dinner in the kitchen, I can look out and see a bird hopping around skillfully, gathering its own meal while I tend to mine. When I’m sitting in the living room, reading or drinking tea, I can suddenly find myself face to face with another bird. We’ll be staring at each other and, after some time, decide we can both carry on with our business, living side by side. Even as I write this—the large windows open to a lovely, soft evening—a white feather comes floating down by my side, probably from one of the resident pigeons.
As I don’t have the luxury of a garden, this tree makes me feel connected to the outdoors. Such is an ancient tree, a tree that is itself home to many other creatures—that feels different. It is as if it has adopted me and made me a part of its world, without ever asking for something in return. But if needs be, I know that it can count on me and I will protect it with all my strength.

One morning, I noticed the sky was a beautiful blue, and the air was filled with the sweet smell of flowers. I decided the lessons would be taught outside.
I got the girls ready. We headed up into the forest, setting ourselves by a pond. My elder daughter Saoirse began catching frogs, while my younger daughter Ula looked at me, waiting to be instructed. I handed her a drawing board and the colored pencils. “We wait and see if something comes along. In the meantime, just draw what's around you.” I told her.
Just then a bird flew across the water, and settled in front of a fallen tree. I quickly told Ula, worried that she’d not seen the creature. But she had, and she began drawing it.
An hour later, she finished her picture and I found she drew the bird on her paper amazingly well. But there was one other interesting fact about this drawing: she also drew me, sitting beside her.
Staring at this child’s drawing of us watching a bird, I realized how I’d lived for 40 years, gathered 10 years of higher education, and never understood the basis of science before this moment. It is a sense of wonder: it isn’t about correctly reciting words from textbooks. It is first about stepping outside and admiring the world around us.
From that day on, it was I not my husband that acted as the science teacher.

As a computer science professor at Carnegie Mellon University, Pausch was asked to deliver a "last lecture”. This well-known campus tradition allowed professors to share worldly wisdom with students as if they were dying and had one last lecture to give.
The only difference in Pausch's case is that Pausch really was dying, but it only motivated him more. He delivered his last lecture, "Really Achieving Your Childhood Dreams” on Sept. 18, 2007.
Pausch began by sharing several of his boyhood dreams, some of which he had achieved and the others he hadn't. He described the importance of having dreams and how anyone can still learn a lot by reaching for those dreams, even if they don't always succeed He shared the values learned through experience, which he hoped to pass on to others hard work, laughter and gratitude.honesty , character ,

He turned the lecture into a book by the same name, which quickly became a best-seller. Readers were deeply moved by the book's representation of Pausch's lifelong philosophy and the way it revealed the biggest source of his motivation—his three young children.

At seven, she was spotted by coach Xu Yilong, who found Wang quick in her playful behavior. As the only girl in the boys’ team, Wang’s performances were impressive, earning her the nickname “Iron Girl.” And soon, she sensed the sport’s power. Football allowed her to “release herself” and realize “whatever happens, football never leaves you alone.”
However, life was never smooth sailing. The constant jibes (嘲讽) from some people, who always tried to push her down and destroy her hopes, affected her so deeply that she lost confidence. “They were saying I had no talent at all. Gradually, I felt really so.” Wang once wrote. But never did she stop playing. When she was called up to the national team, aged 17, Wang thought, “Me? Are you sure?” When a world-famous club wanted to sign her, she was “excited that an excellent coach thought I was good.” It was only then that she felt confident in her abilities. “I felt recognized. Perhaps I had a bit of talent after all.”
Not any “bit of talent”; the genius is praised as China’s once-in-a-generation player.
China is a pioneer of women’s football in Asia and has won the continental championship eight times, including seven straight titles between 1986 and 1999. That was their golden age. Gradually, though, the dynasty declined. It is hoped that Wang will inspire the women’s football of the country to its former height.
Coaches are almost always hesitant to speak about individual players. But when coach Shui was asked about Wang before the match against Vietnam, she couldn’t stop mentioning her influence on the team. Unfailingly performing on the big stage, Wang did not let her team down. When they lacked a quality ball, she delivered two high assists that finally led her team into the last-four clash (四分之一决赛).
“Nobody knows how hard it was,” declared Wang after the match. “We overcame difficulties. We also showed our strong spiritual power. I am proud of my team.”

In the eyes of many Americans, Chinese are short, bookish, and not especially athletic. Yao, 26, has turned that image on its head. A giant at 2. 26 metres, he has been the most talked-about player in the league since he topped the NBA draft (选秀) in 2002.
When Yao first joined the Rockets and struggled with an American style of basketball, many were quick to label (把……称为) Yao “a failure”. But Yao played on. He did not let the criticism affect his performance. Even when former NBA star Charles Barkley bet that Yao could not score more than 19 points in a single game, Yao kept his self-respect. The same cannot be said for Barkley, who was forced to kiss a real donkey’s ass when Yao passed the 19-point mark early in his first season.
For Americans, Yao’s polite and friendly personality is liked by them compared with the rude behaviors of the NBA’s bad boys. Compared with most other NBA players, Yao Ming is a true gentleman. He respects all of his opponents, even those who are not friendly to him. “He is so wise and humorous that he seems like a diplomat (外交家) rather than a basketball player sometimes,” said Ron Burke, an NBA TV reporter.
In addition, Yao’s witty answers have changed the opinion that Chinese people are boring. When asked what were his favourite English words, Yao told the press that the five words were “This is the last question.” Yao is winning supporters within the league as well. After a Rockets-Lakers game that Shaquille O’Neal had to sit out with an injury, O’Neal said, “You played pretty good, Yao Ming.” Yao replied, “That’s because you weren’t there.”

“His fierce competitiveness, work ethic and drive were unmatched,” Jeanie Buss, owner of the Los Angles Lakes, told ESPN. “Those qualities helped Bryant lead us to five titles — and have now brought him to the Hall of Fame. No one deserves it more.”
Indeed, it was Bryant’s unmatchable commitment and determination to be the best that elevated (提升地位) him above his peers. He called it the “mamba mentality” after the black mamba, one of the world’s deadliest snakes — and also after the top killer from the 2003 movie Kill Bill. The mamba mentality became so popular that Bryant even detailed his process in his book The Mamba Mentality: How I Play. In it, he revealed his famously detailed approach as well as his physical and mental preparation to not just succeed at the game, but to excel.
“Mamba mentality is all about focusing on the process and trusting in the hard work, which is just the competitive spirit.” he wrote in the book. “It started when someone described me like that one day, and it’s grown into something athletes – and even non-athletes – adopt as a mindset.”
Bryant took after one of the greatest basketball players, Michael Jordan, not only with regard to Jordan’s playing style, but his competitive nature. “I liked challenging people and making them uncomfortable,” Bryant once said, “That’s what leads to self-reflection and improvement. You could say I dared people to be their best selves.”
Though many were shocked and sad when the Los Angles great died in a helicopter crash in January, all signs point to Bryant’s legacy (遗产) for generations to come. Whether you’re a basketball player or not, you can’t deny the Kobe’s power to inspire you to be your best self.
