1 . So you’re going to the royal wedding! Let’s review a checklist of everything you’ll need to know.
What to wear at the ceremony
Did you get your fascinator yet? That’s a trick question because you probably don’t even know what a fascinator is. Royal dress code etiquette (礼仪) states that women must wear hats for formal events, and fascinators are the preferred accessory (配饰). These funny hats boast a large decorative design. If you haven’t packed one, no worries. Simply glue a cabbage to the side of your head. No one will be the wiser, and you can always snack on your fascinator should the wedding ceremony drag on. Gentlemen are expected to wear morning coats and top hats. Royals will likely wear their military uniforms.
Meeting the royals
Men, when greeting the royals, a simple bow will do. Not so low that it looks as if you’re examining the carpet for any medals they might have dropped. This is a slight neck bow. Women perform a curtsy. Simply put one leg behind the other, bend your knees, bow your head slightly and fall over because you’ve never done this before.
Chatting up the queen
The first rule of talking to the queen: Don’t talk. That is, unless spoken to. If she does start a conversation and you find you’ve run out of interesting stuff to discuss after “Hello”, break the ice with a joke. “Hey, why did the queen go to the dentist?” “To get her teeth crowned!”
Dining
Every meal begins and ends with the queen. You can’t start eating until she starts, and you stop when she stops. The queen doesn’t appear to be a large eater, so you should wolf down your food in case she pushes the plate away after a few bites. When dining, the royals hold knives in their right hand and forks in their left with the tines facing down.

3 . Paris is the city of dreams. If you plan to head to Paris for a study period, then perhaps a little reality check is in order. But my experience was a romantic one.
I paved my path to Paris through an exchange program. On arrival in Paris, I was constantly reminded of the official processes I had to complete — forms to be filled in, meetings to attend, the list seemed endless.
Then the real work began. Once classes were underway, I found myself volunteering to do oral presentations and assignments first, rather than last. This method proved to be very helpful.
Once I had finished class for the week, I had an ever-increasing list of museums to visit, neighborhoods to explore, and cafés to sit in. Read books about Paris. Talk to locals and other foreigners living there. But the one thing that reading a book or talking to someone cannot do is to provide you with the experience of wandering Paris on foot. The people watching, the sounds of the city, the colors as the seasons change, they all add to the ecstasy that I experience in Paris as an exchange student.
After spending five months wandering through the charming neighborhoods, I fell in love with the atmosphere that came out from every open door, and with every spoken word. There is something comforting about walking to the market each Sunday to enjoy the beautiful display of fruits, vegetables and dairy products. There is warmth in saying bonjour to the passers-by.
On my last day in Paris, I confidently said, “Bonjour Monsieur,” as I passed the little store down the street. I guess the best part about going on exchange in Paris is falling in love with the city in your own way. And I know mine is unique and special to me, my own little pieces of Paris.
1. What does the underlined word "ecstasy" in Paragraph 4 probably mean?A.Courage. | B.Imagination. |
C.Happiness. | D.Reputation. |

C.An exchange program. | D.A traveling experience. |
A.Enjoying coffee in his spare time. |

6 . Britons may like to complain a lot, but they rarely do so right now, explains BBC writer Ruth Margolis. They would rather grumble(发牢骚) afterwards. This is because Britons hate to put someone out and cause any embarrassment. Margolis writes, “For instance, I'm much more comfortable just leaving that piece of raw chicken on my plate instead of complaining to restaurant staff. But beware: if this kind of thing happens when you're dining with Americans, they will most likely speak up on your behalf and not understand why you find this ashamed.”
In a BBC blog post comparing cultural differences between the UK and the US, Margolis mentions a few other things that Americans like to do that are offensive to Britons.
Not making introductions
Margolis says most Britons dislike this approach because “talking to strangers without being introduced gives them a stomach ache”. Americans rarely introduce a new friend to their friends at parties. Strangers are supposed to introduce themselves.
“Quite” good
Using “quite” to mean “very” happens a lot in the US. But if you are invited to a dinner party in Britain, don't describe the meal as “quite good” if you want to express high praise. To Britons' ears, “quite” detracts from the “good”: the meal was OK but could have been better.
Money talk
Americans can talk about money subjects for hours without feeling uncomfortable. For Britons, says Margolis, “Talking about how much we make is unthinkable—even less discussing our feelings.”
Over-politeness
“It's not that I want shop assistants to be actively rude. But neither do I want to expend energy responding to someone who's been paid to ask: ‘How are you today?’” says Margolis. In the US, it is not unusual to be greeted by a perfect stranger as “honey” or “sweetie”. But Margolis says Britons find affected friendliness, especially in stores, deeply irritating.

B.Britons are not good at complaining |

D.Americans complain more than Britons |

A.How to get on well with westerners. |
B.How to start conversations with Britons. |
C.Ruth Margolis’ tips on public behaviour. |
D.Some American habits that annoy Britons. |
7 . We shouldn’t judge a person by their appearance but we do. In fact, the experts say that when we meet someone for the first time we make a decision about what that person is like in three seconds.
Schools have always understood this and a lot of them ask their students to wear a uniform. Why? A lot of teachers think a uniform makes students feel that they are part of their school and that their form helps them to be serious about their studies.
But can our clothes really tell people what we are like?
A.Maybe not, but they can show our attitude to what we are doing at the moment. |
B.Some of the teachers hold different opinions. |
C.But what do we look at? |
D.Teachers say that uniforms can help in other ways too. |
E.Our clothes stand for our attitude. |
F.However, it is not only schools that want people to dress in a certain way. |
G.When we go into a bank we expect the staff to wear suits or dresses. |
