1 . The National Football Museum has the world’s largest public collection of football objects and archives (档案), which is known as the Football Heritage Collection. In 2013 it was recognised as an official Designated Collection by Arts Council England and described as “of outstanding importance and value”. There are currently over 40,000 items within the collection, which continues to grow as we acquire new objects to preserve and help us share stories about football. Below provides a brief summary of the individual collections that contribute to the Football Heritage Collection.

The finest single collection of football in the world was collected by Harry Langton, a London journalist with a passion for the game. The vast collection includes artwork, toys and games and playing equipment, and also houses a number of objects relating to women’s football.

This collection reflects all aspects of the history and development of the world’s oldestprofessional league, founded in 1888. Handbooks, attendance records, programmes and a large range of books provide an invaluable research tool for the museum.

This rich and developing collection features objects donated to us by members of thepublic, footballers (and their families) and other people related to the game. The 6,000-strong collection features all kinds of items.

The official collection from Preston North End contains over 1,000 objects and celebratesone of the most famous clubs in the history of the game, and the team that play at the oldest football league ground in the world.

4 . The Chong Yang Festival has a history of over 2,000 years. It comes on the ninth day of the ninth lunar month, so it is called the Double Ninth Festival.

There are many kinds of activities on the Chong Yang Festival. It is a time when it’s getting cold, so Chinese people make the festival a time for sending winter clothes for the dead family members. Because autumn has a clear sky and fresh air, it is a very good time to climb a mountain. Climbing a mountain has been the tradition of the Chong Yang Festival since the Western Han Dynasty. Also, it is good for our health. On the Chong Yang Festival, people also eat Chong Yang cakes, enjoy chrysanthemum(菊花) flowers, and drink chrysanthemum wine.

Today, the Chong Yang Festival has got its new meaning —a day for showing respect to the old. On the festival day, people show their respect, care and love to old people, and they also do lots of things to help the old. Many parks, communities and organizations plan the activities for old people, such as an autumn trip, singing songs or sending presents to them. We hope the old are happy and stay healthy by taking part in these activities. Many young people accompany(陪伴) the old on outings, or make some delicious food for them.

Tian Guanxiang, 49, was delighted to hear that the     1     (tradition) tea-making techniques of China had been listed as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage (非物质遗产).

For Tian, tea making is not only a heritage,     2     is also what has made a better life possible for her and her family. The tea farmer’s family lives     3     the foot of the tea hill.     4     (look) back from a window, one can see tea trees dyeing the mountain to lively green all year long.

“In the past, we were a poor family of nine who made     5     living from tea gardens. In the early years, when I went to the town to sell tea, I could only carry them on my     6     (shoulder), with two heavy bags hung on each end of the pole,” Tian said. Thanks to local poverty reduction (脱贫) efforts, the village now has paved roads and Internet access, with a cement road going straight to the door of Tian’s home, and tap water flowing     7     (direct) into her kitchen. In 2020, several experts     8     (invite) to the county to serve as chief scientists for the local tea. The experts told tea farmers     9     (stop) using pesticides (农药), promising that they have better ways to kill the pests.

“With good quality, our tea sells at a better price. Growing and selling tea makes our wallets ‘swollen’ and, moreover,     10     (attract) more tourists to the tea gardens. Now, our village has become a scenic spot,” Tian said.

9 . In Colonial days, farm families worked from sunrise to sunset and sometimes longer. People had little time for play. They did not have a chance to see other people as much as we do today. But sometimes they were able to turn hard work into good times and still visit with their neighbours.

In Virginia, Indian corn was an important crop. In late autumn after the weather had turned cold, the corn was ready to be harvested. Each ear had a cover of leaves called the husk (壳). The colonists pulled ears of corn from the dry stalks and stored the ears of corn. Later, they held a corn husking­party.

On a clear night in November, neighbouring families gathered to husk (剥去……的壳) the corn. They lit lanterns in a barn and piled the corn in high mounds(垛) on the floor. Then everyone went to work.

Most of the corn was yellow or white. But from time to time, a red ear was found. The person who found it was supposed to have good luck.

As people worked together, they enjoyed each other’s company. There was cider to drink and cakes and cookies to eat. Corn husking was a favourite with boys and girls because they liked the chance to have a party.
