March 14 is right around the comer, and math learners know     1     that means. It’s Pi Day, a holiday honoring one of math’s most famous constants (常量): pi.

The number pi, or π, is equal to the circumference (圆周长) of a circle     2     (divide) by the circle’s diameter (直径). That comes out to about 3.14159. This is true for circles of all sizes, from     3     (penny) to pizzas to planets. Pi’s value is often rounded to 3.14. That’s why Pi Day     4     (celebrate) on March 14. It’s also why one Earth-sized planet orbiting another star every 3.14 days is nicknamed “Pi Earth.”

But the exact value of pi is     5     (actual) impossible to write out. Last year, a     6     (power) computer calculated pi to record-breaking 62.8 trillion (万亿) figures. And in 2005, one 23-year-old used clever mental tricks to recite nearly 68,000 of those figures from memory. No one, though, will ever get to     7     end of pi.

Historians aren’t sure when people first     8     (discover) the concept of pi. But it’s been known in some form     9     almost 4,000 years. Ancient Greeks and Babylonians knew estimates of it. The Egyptians may have used pi     10     (build) the pyramids. And still today, pi is used in just about all math involving circles.

Chinese culture is full of wonders. The reason why human culture can be exchanged and spread is       1     the civilization itself has deep value.

On October 12, 2022,     2     Italian astronaut released photos of China from space with sentences from Lantingji Xu, a famous article     3     (write) by Wang Xizhi, a calligrapher from the Eastern Jin Dynasty in China. The post received a lot of praise for the beauty of classical Chinese literature. But this is not the first time that it       4     (be) a focus of attention outside China.

Some Turkish sinologists(汉学家) say that The Art of War contains Chinese wisdom; some Kazakhstan sinologists say they have a special     9     (fond) for Confucian wisdom; some Russian sinologists say they love translating Chinese poetry. From the moment they began to “re-examine” Chinese philosophy, everything was just a matter of       10     (reveal) the mysterious veil(面纱).

Celebrating Chinese New Year overseas is a completely different experience. Chinese New Year was     1     of the things I missed most about Singapore—the reunion of family     2     (member) whom we hadn’t seen for the last 364 days, the exchanging of gifts, the various colours and sounds that we so     3     (close) connect with this most Chinese of festivals.

The documentary film The Magical Craftsmanship of Suzhou, featuring Chinese intangible cultural heritages, was launched in Australia and New Zealand on July 28, 2022. Before launching, it was released in North America in June,     1     stimulated a wide discussion on the eastern aesthetics(美学)and the intangible cultural heritages. It gave the     2     (local) a close up look at how ancient handicrafts continue to color modern Chinese life.

The film,     3     (joint) produced by Suzhou Broadcasting Cooperation and Suzhou Protection and Management Office of Intangible Cultural Heritage, aims     4     (present) an elegant and fresh Chinese culture to overseas audiences. It mainly focuses     5     nine handicrafts with long-lasting lineages in Suzhou city and     6     (share) the story about Chinese artists, conveying the eastern manufacturing concepts and craftsmanship spirits.

Caitlin Nugent, a 26-year-old teacher from Sydney, attended one of the documentary’s screenings. She said she     7     (draw) by the process behind silk brocades(锦缎)and the film added to her dream of     8     (make) the trip to China that she had never been to. A few days ago, the Palace Museum and the Shanghai Kunqu Opera Troupe signed a cooperation agreement on promotion of the Kunqu Opera. The cooperation has created     1     effective way to promote traditional culture

The Palace Museum is one of the     2     (large) museums of ancient Chinese culture and art in China. It used to be the Forbidden City,     3     the emperors of China’s Ming and Qing dynasties lived and conducted state     4    (affair), and was turned into a museum later.

The Kunqu Opera is one of the oldest types of opera in China.     5     (feature) mild and emotional melodies, poetic lines and graceful gestures, it can best represent the traditional Chinese arts. The Kunqu Opera     6    (be) under state protection since the PRC was founded.

The cooperation     7     the Palace Museum and the Shanghai Kunqu Opera Troupe is a good attempt to preserve this opera, which is     8    (real) worth encouraging.
