Last year at Christmas time, my wife, three children and I were on our way from Paris to Nice. Somehow everything went wrong. Our hotels were “tourist traps” and our rented car broke down. On Christmas Eve, when we checked into a dirty hotel in Nice, there was no Christmas spirit in our hearts.
It was raining and cold when we went out to eat. We found a small restaurant poorly decorated for the holiday. Only five tables in the restaurant were taken. There were two German couples, two French families, and an American sailor, by himself. They were eating in stony silence except the sailor. He was writing a letter, and a half-smile lighted his face. In the corner a piano player was listlessly (无精打采地) playing Christmas music.
All of us were interrupted by an old French flower woman through the front door. She had a worn overcoat and her old shoes were wet. Carrying her basket of flowers, she went from one table to another. No one bought any. Exhausted and sad, she sat down at a table.
The sailor finished his meal and got up to leave. Putting on his coat, he walked over to the flower woman’s table.
“Merry Christmas,” he said, smiling and picking out a handful of flowers. “How much are they?”
“Two francs, sir.”
The sailor put a twenty franc note in the woman’s hand.
“I don’t have change, sir,” she said. “I’ll get some from the waiter.”
“No, ma’am,” said the sailor, leaning over and kissing the ancient cheek. “This is my Christmas present for you.”

It was raining pretty hard on Halloween, but that wasn’t going to stop my little sister Kate and me from trick-or-treating. We decided to start at Miss Parson's house. Miss Parson was loved by us kids who lived nearby because she often shared her self-made cookies with us. We usually finished them in a second, especially when we were hungry after class. Sometimes, when we visited her or did something for her, she always gave us surprise.
Kate and I wondered what kinds of treats she'd offer. As we walked down the street, I held an umbrella, a bag for candy, and my sister's hand. Jack-o-Lantems gave soft light along the street. Spider webs hung in all the windows. Parents who were dressed up like monsters (怪物) stood in doorways. After we had walked a few blocks, we were wet from head to toes, and I felt Kate was trembling with cold.
There was a light on at Miss Parson's house, but there were no ghosts,小妖精), or Jack-o-Lantems. We climbed up the steps and saw Miss Parson through a window. She was drinking a cup of hot tea.
"Maybe she doesn't celebrate Halloween," Kate said with a sigh, disappointedly.
"Well, even if she doesn't, she usually likes it when we visit her," I said and knocked on the door.
Miss Parson seemed surprised when she opened it and saw our dressing. " Is today Halloween?" she asked. "I completely forgot. I am so sorry!"

I knew I was not supposed to be quite so excited. I was too old for that. At age eleven, the oldest and my mom's "grown up" girl, I had to keep my cool. I was in middle school after all. But every chance I got, when I was alone, I checked each present under the tree. I read every tag and felt every package, guessing at the contents within. I had examined each gift so often that I could tell which present went to which person without even looking at the tags.
It had been a tough year for my family. Whenever my mom looked over at the tree and scattered（撒）presents, she would sigh and warn us, "There won't be as much for Christmas this year. Try not to be disappointed." Christmas had traditionally been a time for my parents to spoil us. In years past, the presents would pile up and spill out from under the tree, taking over the living room. I had heard the phrase "giving is better than receiving," but thought that whoever had said that must have been out of their mind. Getting presents was the whole point! It was the reason I couldn't get to sleep on Christmas Eve.
On Christmas morning, we eagerly waited in the hallway until Dad told us everything was ready. We rushed into the living room and let the wrapping paper fly. We made weak attempts to wait and watch while other family members opened their presents, but as the time passed we lost our self-control.
"Here's another one for you,” said Mom as she handed me a package. I looked at it, confused. Having spent so much time examining the presents before Christmas, I recognized this one. But it had not been mine. It was my mom's. A new label had been put on it, with my name written in my mother's handwriting.

The meaning of silence varies among cultural groups. Silences may be thoughtful, or they may be empty when a person has nothing to say. A silence in a conversation may also show stubbornness, or worry. Silence may be viewed by some cultural groups as extremely uncomfortable; therefore attempts may be made to fill every gap with conversation. Persons in other cultural groups value silence and view it as necessary for understanding a person's needs.
Many native Americans value silence and feel it is a basic part of communication among people, just as some traditional Chinese and Thais do. Therefore, when a person from one of these cultures is speaking and suddenly stops, what may be implied is that the person wants the listener to consider what has been said before continuing. In these cultures, silence is a call for reflection.
Other cultures may use silence in other ways, particularly when dealing with conflicts among people or in relationships of people with different amounts of power. For example, Russian, French, and Spanish persons. may use silence to show agreement between parties about the topic under discussion. However, Mexicans may use silence when instructions are given by a person in authority rather than be rude to that person by arguing with him or her. In still another use, persons in Asian cultures may view silence as a sign of respect, particularly to an elder or a person in authority.
Nurses and other care-givers need to be aware of the possible meanings of silence when they come across the personal anxiety their patients may be experiencing. Nurses should recognize their own personal and cultural construction of silence so that a patient's silence is not interrupted too early 'or allowed to go on unnecessarily. A nurse who understands the healing value of silence can use this understanding to assist in the care of patients from their own and from other cultures.

Having good manners means practice of behaving decently(得体地) and having a feeling to act like a decent man. First, we must understand the meaning of "manners". Manner is the way of doing something, the way to perform some action, and the way to behave in specific conditions. Good manners are thus the proper and decent ways to perform some action or to behave well in specific conditions. Having good manners and behaving well are important in our routine life. Good manners and good behavior make a man valuable and respectable.
Good manners are not only to talk politely but the whole meaning of good manners counts many things. The way to eat and drink, the behavior while traveling, the way of sitting in front of elders, the accent of talking to young ones, the performance during lectures, the way of sitting in a meeting, the behavior during some gatherings, and many more. A person having a sense of behaving well is a well-mannered person, and has a respectable place in society.
The civilized societies only accept those who have good manners and civilized acts. Actually the well-civilized society comes into existence only due to the civilized people, and when a society is civilized, it means it is more successful than others. In the development of a country, civilization and good manners play a very important role . So, if a person does not behave well and lacks good manners, he is not only disrespectful to his society and home but he is also a shame for the whole country. When we visit another country, we are representing our whole nation in that country, and when we don’t have good manners, then our whole nation is thought to be uncivilized.
Thus, if you wish to be respected, then behave like a civilized and well-mannered person.
