3 . In early November of 1503, during Christopher Columbus's fourth and final trip to America, his ship was seriously damaged in a storm. Columbus and his men had to live on a small island for several months while they tried to repair their ship and return to Spain.
At first, the local people on the island were very kind to the European visitors, giving them all the food and clothes they needed to survive. However, as months passed, the local people became more and more unhappy with their guests, who were tricking and stealing from them. Finally the locals decided to stop helping. Without food or any way to leave the island, Columbus's group was soon in serious trouble.
Luckily for Columbus, he had a book about the stars and planets on his ship. It described the movements of all the objects in the night sky. The book, written by a well-known German scientist, said there would be a total lunar eclipse(月全食) on the evening of February 29,1504 and how long it would last.
Columbus worked out the difference in time between Germany and North America. He then had a meeting with the local leaders just before the eclipse would take place. In this meeting, Columbus told them his god was angry because the local people were no longer giving food. So his god would take away the moon to punish them. The moment Columbus finished talking, just as he had planned, the moon began disappearing.
The local leaders grew panicked and quickly agreed to provide Columbus with food and anything else he wanted. But first, Columbus's god had to return the moon. Columbus told them he would have to discuss the idea with his god on his ship. Knowing the moon would stay completely hidden for about 48minutes, Columbus returned just before the moon began to reappear. From that day on, until they finally left, Columbus and his men no longer had any trouble getting the food they needed.

4 . In America, each of the states likes to promote themselves with a slogan(口号). I currently live in Utah, where the slogan is “Life Elevated.” It’s a nod to outdoor entertainment in the high country, including the ski industry. I previously lived in Colorado, a land with red dirt, great mountains and golden plains. The slogan there is “Colorful Colorado.” Years ago I lived in the “Peach State” of Georgia, and I grew up in New Mexico as a little boy, whose slogan is “ Land of Enchantment(魔力).”
We never seemed to get away from dust in New Mexico, so I appreciate the story of a newcomer to the Land of Enchantment who learned about dusty breezes. She was visiting an antique shop and the owner wiped down every item before showing it.The newcomer said, “Everything gets dusty here pretty quickly, doesn’t it?”
“That’s not dust, honey,” the shop owner replied.“That’s ENCHANTMENT.”
Here was a person who took a negative and turned it into something humorous. That made the problem more acceptable, or at least live with.A Hong Kong shopping center manager was informed that an escalator(电动扶梯)broke. He posted a sign to warn customers. He chose not to use the traditional “Out of Order’’ or “Do Not Use” warnings.Instead, his sign read, “This Escalator Is Temporarily a Stairway.” He turned a minus into humor and made it a plus.
And in fact there are some things, like the weather, we can’t change. All we can change is our ways that we think and feel about them. I believe one of the best techniques to do this is to find some humor in the situation. Finding something amusing or enjoyable of a difficulty, an irritation or a troublesome problem can be one of the most creative and effective things we can do. Sometimes the only sense you can make of a situation is a sense of humor.

6 . Many people may know Coachella, which is one of the largest, most famous and most profitable (盈利的)music festivals in the United States and all over the world. However, few people know Just for Laughs (JFL). Founded by Montreal producer Gilbert Rozon in 1983, Just for laughs is the largest international comedy festival in the world. Paul Ronca, the festival’s director, describes Just for Laughs as the Coachella of comedy. “If you’re a fan of comedy or work in it, this festival should be at the very top of your list,” he says.
Just for Laughs was originally a two—day French—only comedy event. In 1985, Andy Nulman joined the festival's staff and introduced English language events as well. Thanks to Andy Nulman, the festival grew from a two—day show to a month—long event drawing international audiences. In 1999, Nulman left the festival’s fall —time employ. However, he directed its major shows at the Saint—Denis Theatre every July, and remained on the board of directors of the festival's parent company. About II years later, Nulman returned to Just for Laughs in July 2010 as president of Festivals and Television.
Now Just for Laughs is coming Io Africa. A joint venture (合资企业) between the great comedy brand and a South Africa's company, Just for Laughs Africa will give the African comedians the opportunity of getting international publicity. The long—term continental partnership was announced during the 35th Montreal Comedy Festival, with the news that the first Just for Laughs Africa will take place in Durban, South Africa.
“We have already set up successful Just for Laughs festivals in many cities beyond Montreal including Toronto, Vancouver and Sydney, and we couldn’t be more excited by this new venture in South Africa ,” says Gilbert Rozon, president and founder of the Just for Laughs Group. “The opportunity to bring the experience of the Just for Laughs team to developing African comedy was one we just couldn’t decline, so we agreed on the partnership,” says Gilbert Rozon.

10 . There was a time an event would not begin without a photographer.“I remember the days when event organizers would even delay a show if the photographer was running late,” says Balachandra Raju,a photographer of Sathyam studio,a still surviving photo studio in India’s southern city of Chennai.
Photo studios are facing extinction in the digital age.But as they struggle to continue doing the business, one research project is looking at ways to preserve their legacy(遗产) by digitizing archival(档案的) pictures.
The project, funded by the British Library, visited around 100 photo studios across the south Indian state of Tamil Nadu and digitized 10,000 prints. Many of the photos were taken between 1880-1980,and they ranged from pictures of families and famous stars to weddings and funerals.“The digital archive will be useful for those interested in history,” Said Zoe E Headley, one of the researchers.Ramesh Kumar, another researcher on the project, called it a “gold mine” for photographers.“The research we’ve done also highlights production techniques used before digital photography arrived in our cities and towns,” he said.
However, the researchers would often find old photos piled on top of one another in the storage room of a studio.“No one had bothered to clean them,” Kumar said, adding that many photos had been damaged due to the hot and wet weather in Tamil Nadu.
The owner of Nallapillai studio in central Tamil Nadu said he spends about 20,000 rupees (£230;$310) each month to run the studio that was founded by his great grandfather almost 150 years ago.To survive in this digital age has been a struggle.“Many customers don’t book us for special events anymore,” he said, adding that they had all got smartphones to do the job.“I’m not sure if photo studios will exist five years from now,” he said. But this is why, according to Mr Raju, this archival project is so important.
