6 . If Confucius(孔子)were still alive today and could celebrate his September 28 birthday with a big cake, there would be a lot of candles. He'd need a fan or a strong wind to help him put them out.

While many people in China will remember Confucius on his special day, few people in the United States will give him a passing thought. It's nothing personal. Most Americans don't even remember the birthdays of their own national heroes.

But this doesn't mean that Americans don't care about Confucius. In many ways he has become a bridge that foreigners must cross if they want to reach a deeper understanding of China.

In the past two decades, the Chinese studies programs have gained huge popularity in Western universities. More recently, the Chinese government has set up Confucius Institutes in more than 80 countries. These schools teach both Chinese language and culture. The main courses of Chinese culture usually include Chinese art, history and

philosophy(哲学). Some social scientists suggest that Westerners should take advantage of the ancient Chinese wisdom to make up for the drawbacks(缺陷)of Western philosophy. Students in the United States, at the same time, are racing to learn Chinese. So they will be ready for life in a world where China is an equal power with the United States. Businessmen who hope to make money in China are reading books about Confucius to understand their Chinese customers.

So the old thinker's ideas are still alive and well.

Today China attracts the West more than ever, and it will need more teachers to introduce Confucius and Chinese culture to the West.

7 . Although not as much as in the past, grandparents are the teachers of the Navajo (纳瓦霍人) youth. They make young people aware of life at an early age. The parents grant them the privilege of teaching the children, and the grandparents take great pride in raising the children or at least having a big part in raising them.

Young children often stay with their grandparents for years at a time, developing a close and trusting relationship. The grandparents teach the children Navajo legends and the principle of life, emphasizing both new culture trends and the preservation of traditions.

The grandparents are also often the leading figures in teaching the youth the arts of weaving, caring for the livestock, using herbal medicine, and other arts and crafts.

The children are taught to respect their elders, to care for them, to help them whenever they are in need, and to learn from them. Young people are urged to listen with care to the words of their elders and to keep as much wisdom as possible. Grandparents often go to social gatherings and traditional events, and the young have opportunities to learn more about their culture and traditions.

I live with my grandmother for thirteen years, and she raised me in the old ways of our people. Although I was going to school, she taught me as much as she could about our traditions. She was a beautiful woman. If I had a chance, I would listen again to her wise teachings, expressed with kindness in a soft voice that touched my heart.

We used to plant com and pumpkin every summer. They never grew big enough to feed us, but we planted them anyway. I asked my grandmother why. She said, “Grandson, our plants will be far more beautiful than the flowers outside the fence.” I did not understand until one day I saw their beauty as I was coming over the hill with her. She said, “Anything that is a part of you is always far more beautiful than the things which you pass by.” We had some beautiful years together. I am glad she is a part of me and I am a part of her.

Children used to be well disciplined, possessing more respect for culture, tradition, and beliefs than they do now. The world of the Navajo has been influenced by the western world, and the grandparents have less control and influence than they used to. But the young people who have been touched by their teachings have glimpsed a way of life beyond what most people know today.

1. From Paragraph 1 we can learn that _____________.
A.children learn about the meaning of life from their grandparents.
B.grandparents are usually unwilling to teach their grandchildren.

D.parents hate to take the trouble to raise children.
2. The author’s grandmother planted corn and pumpkin because she _____________.
A.hated wild flowersB.needed to feed her family

D.it is impossible to get grandparents involved in teaching again.
4. The purpose of the article is to _____________.

8 . So you’re going to the royal wedding! Let’s review a checklist of everything you’ll need to know.

What to wear at the ceremony

Did you get your fascinator yet? That’s a trick question because you probably don’t even know what a fascinator is. Royal dress code etiquette (礼仪) states that women must wear hats for formal events, and fascinators are the preferred accessory (配饰). These funny hats boast a large decorative design. If you haven’t packed one, no worries. Simply glue a cabbage to the side of your head. No one will be the wiser, and you can always snack on your fascinator should the wedding ceremony drag on. Gentlemen are expected to wear morning coats and top hats. Royals will likely wear their military uniforms.

Meeting the royals

Men, when greeting the royals, a simple bow will do. Not so low that it looks as if you’re examining the carpet for any medals they might have dropped. This is a slight neck bow. Women perform a curtsy. Simply put one leg behind the other, bend your knees, bow your head slightly and fall over because you’ve never done this before.

Chatting up the queen

The first rule of talking to the queen: Don’t talk. That is, unless spoken to. If she does start a conversation and you find you’ve run out of interesting stuff to discuss after “Hello”, break the ice with a joke. “Hey, why did the queen go to the dentist?” “To get her teeth crowned!”

Dining

Every meal begins and ends with the queen. You can’t start eating until she starts, and you stop when she stops. The queen doesn’t appear to be a large eater, so you should wolf down your food in case she pushes the plate away after a few bites. When dining, the royals hold knives in their right hand and forks in their left with the tines facing down.

1. What must women have on for the royal wedding?
A.Morning coats
B.Military uniforms

10 . The rebuilt Notre Dame (巴黎圣母院) could feature a futuristic glass design, solar power, and an urban farm that supports vulnerable and homeless Parisians, if one architecture firm’s vision is realized. In April, French Prime Minister Edouard Philippe announced an international competition for architects to redesign the cathedral’s 19th century spire (尖顶), which fell down after a fire destroyed the 850-year-old Gothic landmark. Paris firm Vincent Callebaut Architectures (VCA) responded to the call with an eco-friendly design that supports the local population and produces more energy than it uses.

The Vincent Callebaut (VC) project is titled “Palingenesis”, a Greek concept of rebirth or recreation. The film proposes a new roof made of galss, oak and carbon fiber, which connects “in one single curved stroke of pencil” to the sloping spire. The rooster which topped the original spire, regained front the remains after the fire, will resume its watch from the new glass design, while the cathedral’s choir will be “bathed in natural light”.

Beneath the spire, the roof will host a fruit and vegetable farm run by charities and volunteers, in order to produce free food for vulnerable local people. “Up to 21 tons of fruits and vegetables could be harvested and directly redistributed for free each year,” the firm said in a press release. “To that end, a farmers’ market would be held every week on the forecourt of Notre Dame.” The roof and spire will also produce electricity, heat and ventilation (air circulation) for the cathedral: an “organic active layer” within the glass will provide solar power, while the roof’s diamond-shaped “scales” will open to offer natural ventilation—a design inspired by termite mounds (白蚁丘). The spire will at as a space in which hot air accumulates in winter.

“How can we write the contemporary history of our country, but also that of science, art and spirituality together?” the firm said in a press release. “We seek to present a supreme project, a symbol of a lively and ecological future.” If the Vincent Callebaut design is selected, the firm said, the reborn Notre Dame will define “the new face of the Church in the 21st century”, presenting “a fairer symbiotic relationship between humans and nature.”

1. What can be learned about the design of Notre Dame by VCA?
A.It is focused on the theme of “green”.
B.It gets the most local support than the others.
C.It can recover Notre Dame’s original appearance.

A.Be made of high-tech materials.B.Show people the right time again.

3. What does paragraph 3 mainly talk about?
A.The inspiration of the design.B.The function of the roof and the spire.
C.A detailed introduction of the VCA project.D.The symbol of Notre Dame for the local people.
4. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A.The future of the new Notre Dame looks black.
B.The proposal for the Notre Dame has been approved.
