文章大意:本文为一篇说明文。文章讲述了第三文化的孩子在生活中从多元文化获得的好处和应付出的代价。他们大多学术水平很高,但是却很难找到归属感。

1 . Did you grow up in one culture, your parents came from another, and you are now living in a totally different country?     1

The term “third-culture kids” was invented in the 1960s by U.S. sociologist Dr. Ruth Hill Useem. She first encountered this phenomenon when she researched North American children living in India.     2     Caught between two cultures, they form their own. While growing up as third-culture kids may sound challenging, these children often benefit from their multicultural background. In general, they often reach excellent academic results.     3

Ginny, aged 20, was born in the U.K. Since her early childhood, she had lived abroad moving around with her parents every few years, before she returned to the U.K. to study. When returning to the U.K. to go to university, she realized she had benefited a lot from her years overseas.     4     While many other undergrads seemed unable to cope on their college life, she was easy to adjust to it.

Yet being a third-culture kid is not always easy. In fact, many hardships may arise from this phenomenon. A third-culture kid may not be able to adapt themselves completely to their new surroundings as expected.     5     Besides, when they return home, the home country can prove to be more foreign than anything they came across before. The peer group they face does not match the idealized image children have of “home”. This often makes it hard for them to form their own identity.

As a part of the growing “culture”, TCKs may find it a great challenge for them to feel at home in many places.

A.If so, then you are a third-culture kid!
B.About 90 percent of them have a university degree.
C.The languages picked up abroad were really useful.
D.The only problem was that she caught the travel bug.
E.After many years, these kids still could not adapt to their host culture.
F.Instead, they may always remain an outsider in different host cultures.
G.These children often get along well with those who suffer from the same confusion.

文章大意:本文是说明文。文章主要讲述多元文化。

5 . The world has been witnessing a growing number of countries where people from around the globe live together and communicate with each other, with various customs and beliefs coexisting. America and Singapore are typical examples. Distinct cultures merge into a common cultural context for mankind.     1

Culture shapes our identity and influences our behaviors, and cultural diversity makes us accept, or to some extent, even integrate and assimilate (同化) into other cultures. To adapt to a diverse cultural community, the fundamental thing is to be aware that there are different cultures apart from our own.     2     Sometimes a person may not know much about geography or history, but by mixing with people from other cultures, they may have the opportunity to learn more about different countries.

For those who want to learn but do not know where to start, a great point is to pick up a book about the culture they are interested in, or do some online research on reputable websites.     3     One more way to start learning about new cultures is simply tasting the food from different cultures, since food can also be an aspect of cultural diversity.

4     It’s the same for children too, especially for those who live in culturally diverse cities such as Los Angeles, Shanghai, or Hong Kong. If children are not aware of diversity, then they become close-minded. This can lead to troubles at school and even lead to bullying. Show them how diverse the world is.     5

In today’s world, if we are able to know about other cultures, and respect other values, life will be easier for us.

A.Understanding diversity is important for adults.
B.Here are some ways to fight against cultural prejudices.
C.The best way to learn, though, is through face-to-face interaction.
D.That’s why more of us feel as if we are living in a multicultural age.
E.Take a positive view of different cultures, and we can broaden our horizons.
F.Help them be more open-minded toward people of different races, cultures, and countries.
G.In many multicultural communities, the best representation of diversity can be found in schools.

I’m Alexandra Grace, Educator at New Zealand Embassy Beijing. Today I will give you a brief introduction of New Zealand’s higher education. The size of the country prevents it     6    (become)a hot study destination. But it draws students with its     7    (safety) and multi-cultural environment.

While it attracts mainly wealthy students, higher education in New Zealand is also affordable for many common Chinese families. Chinese students can get     8    British-based education with the school fee being some of the lowest in the world.     9     average, the school fee was about 25, 000 dollars per year, and the living costs were about 20, 000 dollars a year.
