Culture Shock

Understanding what culture shock is and how it comes about will help you identify it more easily and make your international move a little easier.

The online Oxford Dictionary     1    (define) culture shock as disorientation experienced when someone is suddenly in an unfamiliar culture or way of life. This is a good summary. Let’s break it down a bit further.     2    you move to a new country, everything is unfamiliar: weather, landscape, language, food, dress, social roles, values, customs, and communication—basically, everything you’ re used to is no longer in place.

You’ll find that the day unfolds differently,     3    business is conducted in a way that may be hard to understand, and that the stores are opened and closed at hours you could never predict. The smells, sounds, and tastes are unusual, and you can’t communicate with the locals—not even     4     (buy) a loaf of bread. This is a culture shock, and like any form of shock, there is a definite and almost certain reaction.

How to Help Yourself

There are several things you can do to help yourself     5    the stages of culture shock. First, fight the urge to retreat(=leave)and instead join a club, try out for a sports team, volunteer, or take a language class. Meeting new people and forcing yourself     6    (become) part of the community will help you through the re-integration stage.

Also, it’s important when you’ re settling into your new home country to ensure your home space     7    (feel) good and comfortable.     8    (settle) into a new home is the same in a foreign country     9    it is in your own country. Take the time you need to feel good in your space.

Get out. Walk around your new neighborhood. Be seen. Smile. Visit the same coffee shop or bookstore or market. You’ll soon be recognized.

Go on tours. Be a tourist in your new town. Get to know your city,     10    history and culture. This will help ease you into the independence stage.

A coming-of-age ceremony is an event that marks the time when a young person moves from childhood to adulthood.

In Ancient China, a traditional capping ceremony     1     (hold) when a man turned 20. He was given a “style name”     2     is a name taken at the age of 20. For a young woman, a “hair-pinning ceremony” was observed around her 1st birthday.

On the South Pacific island of Pentecost, another tradition takes place-though only for boys. To prepare     3     it, each boy must go into the forest to find a long vine (藤). During the ceremony, he climbs to the top of a     4    (wood) tower 20 to 30 metres high. There, he fastens one end of the vine to the tower and the other to his feet, and jumps! The boy will not     5    (regard) as a man until he has made the jump.

A particularly modern ceremony takes place in the US. For Americans, 16 is the age at which they gain some significant rights, such as     6    (be) able to work and to drive. A     7    (celebrate) at the age of 16 is     8    (typical) the biggest and most memorable of a girl's or boy's teenage years,     9    (mark) the beginning of a new stage in life. It also should be     10     occasion to take responsibility for themselves.

Before my visit to a friend in Australia, I had done some research on the country     1    (locate)to the south of the equator. After reading about some     2    (icon)sites, I couldn't wait to see all of them. In fact, I was more interested in meeting people in Australia and experiencing their culture, food and way of life.

When I arrived in Sydney, my friend shared many different meals with me,     3     my first impressions of Australia were all about food. A lot of typical Australian food is     4    (original)British. The influence of Asian cultures, on the other hand, led to the     5    (introduce)of bean curd and Asian herbs. When we arrived in Katherine, a town in Australia's Northern Territory, we learned about the life and customs of the Aborigines,     6     are native to Australia. While the Aboriginal population might be small, its influence is still visible.

7    (survive)in this vast land on the ocean, the Aborigines had to be in close contact     8     nature, which also shows in their music.

After being there for several days, my biggest impression is the complicated mix of peoples and cultures. Although the main cultural influence since 1788     9    (be)Western culture, minority cultures have also played a part in shaping the unique Australian culture. After experiencing Australia, I have to say that I agree with     10     tourism slogan: “There's nothing like Australia.”
