1 . As well as hosting New Zealand’s largest and most populous city, the Auckland region features many attractive, diverse places.

Central Auckland

Central Auckland is a hub of urban delights set against beautiful coastal scenery. You can take a trip up the Sky Tower, the tallest building in the Southern Hemisphere. The adventurous can also try SkyJump-New Zealand’s highest base jump-or the incredible Sky Walk where you’ll walk around the outside of the Sky Tower for extraordinary sightseeing.

Rangitoto Island

Emerging unexpectedly from the sea some 600 years ago, Rangitoto, with its distinctive shape and superb location just off the coast, is the youngest and largest volcano in the Auckland volcanic field. The island is a favourite destination for hikers and day-trippers. Walk up to the top, and you can see the black lava caves on your way up and don’t forget to bring a torch to explore them with the kids.

Great Barrier Island

Great Barrier Island is a large island with a small population. For thousands of years, Bt has sheltered Auckland’s harbour from the continuous swells of the Pacific Ocean. The wilderness areas are home to several unique plant and bird species. Most amazingly, the community on the island is not using the public supplies of electricity, gas or water, but entirely relying on renewable solar power and collection of freshwater.

Waiheke Island

In landscape, lifestyle and experience, Waiheke is a world away. The three white sandy beaches are perfect for swimming, kayaking, or having a picnic. If you’re a walker, explore the island’s tracks which wind along cliff tops and into cool native forests. At the eastern end of the island, a walkway leads you to a system of World War Il gun emplacements (炮台) and underground tunnels.

Right whales, Bay of Fundy, Canada

Northern right whales are on the brink of extinction, but survivors arrive in the Bay of Fundy each summer (May through October) to feed east of Grand Manan Island. They are recognized by a broad back and no dorsal fin, which distinguish them from other whales entering the bay.

Planning: Whale-watching tours operate out of Digby Neck peninsula on Nova Scotia and nearby islands, such as Brier Island, St. Andrews, Grand Manan Island, and Deer Island.

Grizzly bears, Alaska, USA

Grizzlies like salmon. In mid-July and again in mid-August, grizzlies make for Alaskan rivers to hook out the fish with their formidable claws. Monarch butterflies, Sierra Chincua, Mexico

They flock intimately on tree trunks, bushes, and on the ground, fully showing their gregarious nature and occupy Sierra Chincua and four neighboring hills that make up the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve.

Planning: Chincua is one of two hills in the reserve open to the public from November through March.

Komodo dragons, Komodo Island, Indonesia

You can hike to a viewpoint at Banugulung and watch as park rangers feed food to the lizards, some of which are more than 10ft long.

Planning: Komodo is reached solely by boat from Bima (on eastern Sumbawa) or Labuan Bajo (on western Flores).

Wildebeest migration, Serengeti, Tanzania

Undoubtedly the world’s most spectacular wildlife sight is the annual wildebeest migration, when 1.4 million wildebeest and 200,000 zebras and gazelles are on the move across the Serengeti plains. 7 . We had promised to do it for years. We would pack a car with cold chicken and drive south like we used to. But we never had a proper time to do it, somehow. My aunt Edna’s heart was failing. Aunt Juanita had to care for my uncle at home, and my mother, Margaret, did not leave home unless blown away from it by tornadoes. So I was surprised a few years ago when my 72-year-old mother told me to pick up all of them for the trip.

I found the three sisters in the yard, with suitcases in their hands. Edna packed some food including two gallons of potato salad for the two-day trip from Jacksonville, Alabama.

As I drove, they talked of childhood, dirt roads where the dark closed in like a cover on a box, and a daddy who chased the bad things away as soon as he walked in. When we arrived in Montgomery, they had ridden a horse named Bob, cooked a dead chicken named Mrs. Rearden, and fished beside a little man named Jessie Clines. As we drove across Mobile Bay they were remembering their mama and a groundhog that lived under the floorboards.

I wanted them to see the sunset from the Fairhope pier, and as we rolled down the bluff, I heard them go quiet. But the sunset was just a light to see. They were looking at the roses, which were flowering in a circle the size of a baseball field. There were more than 2,000 of them. My mother, who never even liked roses much, said, “Oh, my God.” Juanita looked as if she were about to cry. “So beautiful,” she said again and again. She stayed in the rose garden for a long time, till the sun disappeared totally. She saw the Fairhope roses six times on this trip. The last time, because she was tired , we sat in the car.

A year later, I spoke at Edna’s funeral. For the first time, I knew what I wanted to say in my mind, but the words crashed together inside my head and I lost the fine things I really wanted to say. Her daughters just hugged me, one by one, and thanked me for the roses.

1. Where did their trip start?
A.Mobile Bay.B.Fairhope pier.C.Montgomery.D.Jacksonville.
2. What did the sisters do when the author drove?

C.She died a year after the trip.D.She had to care for her husband.
