2 . The images were shocking, and the reaction was completely predictable. The sight of a polar bear lying hurt on a beach - blood matting the fur of its neck, with one huge paw folded under its body - received immediate criticism globally. By the shore in the background stand a group of guides, talking to each other. One of them had a gun hanging casually on his shoulder. This is not something that is taken lightly.     1     .

This powerful image raises questions about the motivations (动机) of this kind of tourism or ecotourism.     2    . Are there regions in the world where nature should be left completely untouched? Has our access to large animals in the wild, often driven by a desire for sensational images, led these animals to become accustomed to human contact? If so, the loser would surely pay a heavy price for such an approach.

Before we answer these questions, we would consider the events that are of global concern. For me, I was definitely shocked. I have recently returned from a trip to Svalbard, and indeed stood two weeks ago on the very beach where the bear was shot.     3    . Was the beach examined from the ship offshore beforehand? Was there access to flares (信号弹) to scare off a bear that appeared suddenly? These are standard measures for a respectable operator, and the accident could be the result of a system failure.

However, images and events should not be used to criticize the concept of ecotourism. Ecotourism is an expanding market that brings benefits as well as challenges to the regions around the world in which it operates.     4    . The key is responsibility and research before booking. If ecotourism is done properly, the benefits are immediate and lasting.

A.The bear's death should never have happened.
B.The reality, however, is considerably more complex.
C.Simply closing off these regions is not the answer.
D.Should we be in these environments at all?
E.Visitors often become ambassadors (大使) for the endangered polar bear.
F.This can be by making financial decisions to conservation groups.

5 . Dave MacPherson may have been the first paying guest at Disneyland when the theme park opened its gates 50 years ago, but he didn’t even have time for one ride. In a hurry to get back to campus for a college class, he instead visited a restroom after spending hours in line and left without as much as a souvenir.

Still, the honor of being the first paid admission came with a special perk: a lifetime pass for four to Disneyland and other Disney parks as they opened.

“I was the most popular guy at the college,” said MacPherson, now 72, a retired journalist living in Monticello, Utah, about 240 miles southeast of Salt Lake City.

He’s taken full advantage of it scores of times, especially when he lived in California. Usage dwindled after he moved to Kansas City, Mo., to work for newspapers and radio.

But being closer to California has made it more useful, and he last made the trip a year ago with his wife, Wanda. He receives a VIP renewal every January.

In 1955, MacPherson was watching televised coverage of the opening of Disneyland for the media and invited guests on July 17, 1955, a day before the park opened to the public.

“I said, ‘Boy, I sure would like to go out there,’” said MacPherson, who figured he might draw a prize for standing first in line.

He drove his Simplex motorbike to Anaheim, arriving shortly before I am to take his place in line an hour before anyone else showed up.

The crowd steadily grew overnight to about 6,000 people, and MacPherson made sure no one got in front of him. When the admission booth opened, a photographer for the Long Beach Press-Telegram captured him buying the first ticket.

Looking at the photo years later, he realized he had his own camera but didn’t use it.

“Why didn’t I shoot some pictures?” he wonders. “I even forgot to ask Walt (Disney) for his autograph. I must have been balmy or something after staying up all night.”

1. What was Dave MacPherson when he first visited Disneyland?
A.A journalist.B.A photographer.C.A student.D.A motorist.
2. Where did MacPherson get the information about the opening of Disneyland?
A.From the newspaper.B.From his friends.
C.From the college committee.D.From the television.
3. Which word CANNOT describe Dave MacPherson?
A.Active.B.Clever.C.Changeable.D.Sharp-minded.

6 . The latest buzzword (流行词) in the tourism industry is “ecotourism”—responsible, environmentally sound vacationing. Ecotourism, or “green tourism,” means taking care of natural resources, protecting endangered species, and preserving and contributing to local communities.

Armed with this “checklist,” I booked a vacation in an “ecoresort.” The brochure looked appealing—a hotel right on the beach, with a large swimming pool and golf course, in acres of unspoiled rain forest.

Unfortunately, the only way to get to this resort (度假胜地) was a 12-hour flight followed by a long taxi ride. I was relieved to see the hotel at the end of the road. It was a low-rise building, made out of local stone. But as I later found out, in order to build the resort, the wealthy owner had bought up 30,000 square kilometers of unspoiled rain forest.

Sunbathing by the glorious swimming pool, enjoying the sound of sprinklers on the golf course, I suddenly realized that this was an area where water is scarce (缺乏的).

So far, not so eco-friendly. I decided to try some of the trips to nearby conservation projects, to give the resort another chance to convince me.

Although it was the breeding season for turtles, we didn’t see any. Apparently the large groups of tourists who arrive at the beach to see the turtles laying their eggs have driven the turtles away. A boat ride to a marine park was also disappointing. The noise of the boats means that the alligators (短吻鳄) are afraid to lie in the sun. The tourists, expecting to see some action, throw stones at the alligators in the water, in the hope of getting them to move.

The trip to the “authentic” local village was pleasant. The resort has turned the local homes into picturesque cottages. However, they are so charming that tourists are buying them, and the locals now live in small towns of badly built houses in the poorest areas of town.

All in all, my vacation didn’t meet any of the standards for ecotourism. But there are many projects around the world where you can have a genuinely “green” experience. My next trip is to a mountain village, as a paying guest in a local family’s home.

I will miss the swimming pool and the golf, though.

1. What caused the writer to choose this resort?
A.The advertisement which looked attractive.
B.The resort which was a 12-hour flight away.
C.A useful checklist.
D.The writer’s love of rain forest.
2. Why were there no turtles on the beach?
A.Because tourists throw stones at them.
B.Because tourists have caused the turtles to stay away.
C.Because the noise of the boats has made them afraid.
D.Because the tourists take away their eggs.
3. According to your understanding, what will the writer think about “ecotourism” after this trip?
A.He thinks it as a brilliant idea.
B.He likes the swimming pool and the golf course.
C.He will still strongly support “ecotourism”.
D.He is disappointed and will have some doubts about it.

7 . Directions: Write the summary of the passage with no more than 80 words and the original sentences in the passage are not allowed to use.

Every country has a capital city. It is where the government of the country meets. The capital city is often the largest and most important city in a country and it has more people, shops, businesses, offices and factories than anywhere else.

The Romans founded a city, which was called Londinium, by the River Thames in AD 43. The area is now the City of London, which is the business centre of the city. The Romans built the first London Bridge. In the 11th century, a royal palace and then a minster (a large and important church) were built 3 km to the west of the city. As London grew and became more crowded, and roads and railways were built, people moved to the suburbs of the city to live. What were once outlying villages and towns were swallowed up, forming Greater London. By the 1860s, London was so crowded that railways had to be built underground. The London Underground now carries millions of passengers every year.

As the capital city, London needs good communications with the rest of the United Kingdom and the wider world. Five airports serve London: Heathrow, Gatwick, London City, Luton and Stansted airports. Heathrow is one of the world’s busiest international airports. There are flights to and from about 220 places worldwide, and more than 40 million travelers use the airport each year. There are also new docks, able to handle large modern ships, at Tilbury, near the mouth of the Thames.

Almost all of the country’s main railway lines and motorways, and many of its main roads, radiate (辐射) out from London. Trains using the Channel Tunnel to mainland Europe start in London, and there is a direct motorway link between London and the Channel Tunnel.

10 . In recent years, 3D printers have mostly been used to create small, specialized items. This includes parts for automobiles, airplanes and medical devices. Many consumer products can also be 3D printed as well, from clothes to foods. Now, an increasing number of startup companies are using 3D printing to build entire homes. Since the technology is still developing, not many have yet been built. However, the top companies plan to greatly increase production in the coming years.

The startup company Icon, based in Austin, Texas, made news in 2018 by completing the first permitted 3D printed home in the U.S. At the time, it said the home had been built in just a day. Since then, the company says it has been developing new technologies in robotics, software and manufacturing materials. It designed its own 3D printer and said the robot-powered machine could create structures up to 185 square meters. The printing process uses a cement-based mixture that Icon says is stronger and saves more money than traditional building materials.

To date, Icon has completed 24 3D printed homes in the U.S. and Mexico. Among them was a community of 3D printed homes in a poor neighborhood in Mexico. The company has also completed a series of structures for homeless people in Austin. And it says it plans to open America's first housing development of 3D printed homes this summer.

A New York company, SQ4D, also uses 3D printing technology to build homes. In February, the company showed off a 130-square-meter model home to demonstrate its printer'sabilities.SQ4D plans to sell its homes starting at $299,000. The company has even started listing the homes on the Internet selling site Zillow. Kirk Andersen is SQ4D's director of operations. He told Reuters the 3D printer will permit buyers to easily create their own home design, room by room.

While 3D printing as a home building method is just getting started, Andersen said others in the construction industry need to get prepared for big changes. “This is the beginning. This is just scratching the surface,” he said.

1. What can we learn about 3D printing technology from Paragraph 1?
A.It needs to be perfected.B.It enjoys the highest status.

3. What is Andersen's attitude to the future of 3D printing as a home building way?
A.Concerned.B.Favorable.C.Doubtful.D.Indifferent.
4. What is the main idea of the text?
A.The development of smart homes.B.The importance of 3D printers.
C.3D printing in building homes.D.Construction industry's future.
