1 . Camps Serving Both Boys and Girls

Camps that serve both boys and girls traditionally offer programmes that separate girls and boys while at camp, yet bring them together for some activities or meals.

Cheley Colorado Camp     Founded in 1921

The Cheley Colorado Camp serves young people from throughout the U. S. and several other countries. Located in and around the Estes Park Valley and surrounded by breathtaking mountain views and forests, Cheley Camp serves boys and girls, divided by gender (性别) and age group, starting at age nine years old. Campers have the opportunity to experience unforgettable fun activities, mountain biking, river rafting, horseback riding, hiking, and backpacking. When the day is done, campers have the opportunity to gather around the evening campfire.

Camp Killooleet serves boys and girls who are 9—14 years of age. Camp Killooleet is located along the edge of the Green Mountain National Forest in Hancock Vermont. The owners say that nearly all the campers return to Camp Killooleet each year until they reach the age limit. Children are housed in small groups of the same gender and experience the beauty of the nearly 300 acres and private lake. In addition to bicycling at the flat campus, children can explore local nature sites, canoeing in the Adirondacks, caving and rock-climbing. Children can also choose a wide variety of sports such as basketball, soccer, horseback riding and so on.

Camp Weequahic     Founded in 1953

Lying just two hours northwest of NYC and three hours north of Philadelphia, Camp Weequahic offers a traditional camping experience for campers aged 7—13. Parents and children may choose the three-week sleep-away option or can opt for the “Super Six” week camping experience. Whichever option your family chooses, Camp Weequahic features continuous fun and learning experiences for your children. 文章大意:这是一篇说明文。主要介绍了芝加哥早期的工程问题及其解决办法。

2 . In its early history, Chicago had floods frequently, especially in the spring, making the streets so muddy that people, horses, and carts got stuck. An old joke that was popular at the time went something like this: A man is stuck up to his waist in a muddy Chicago street. Asked if he needs help, he replies, “No, thanks. I’ve got a good horse under me.”

The city planner decided to build-an underground drainage (排水) system, but there simply wasn’t enough difference between the height of the ground level and the water level. The only two choices were to lower the Chicago River or raise the city.

An engineer named Ellis Chesbrough convinced the city that it had no choice but to build the pipes above ground and then cover them with dirt. This raised the level of the city’s streets by as much as 12 feet.

This of course created a new problem: dirt practically buried the first floors of every building in Chicago. Building owners were faced with a choice: either change the first floors of their buildings into basements (地下室), and the second stories into main floors, or hoist the entire buildings to meet the new street level. Small wood-frame (结构) buildings could be lifted fairly easily. But what about large, heavy structures like the Tremont Hotel, which was a six-story brick building?

That’s where George Pullman came in. He had developed some house-moving skills successfully. To lift a big structure like the Tremont Hotel, Pullman would place thousands of jackscrews (千斤顶) beneath the building’s foundation (地基). One man was assigned to operate each section of about 10 jackscrews. At Pullman’s signal each man turned his jackscrew the same amount at the same time, thus raising the building slowly and evenly. Surprisingly, the Tremont Hotel stay open during the entire operation, and many of its guests didn’t even notice anything was happening.

Some people like to say that every problem has a solution. But in Chicago’s early history, every engineering solution seemed to create a new problem. Now that Chicago’s waste water was draining efficiently into the Chicago River, the city’s next step was to clean the polluted river.

1. The city planners were convinced by Ellis Chesbrough to ______.
A.get rid of the street dirtB.lower the Chicago River

2. The underlined word “hoist” in Paragraph 4 means “______”.

A.It interrupted the business of the hotel.
B.It went on well as intended.
C.It involved Pullman turning ten jackscrews.
D.It separated the building from its foundation.
4. The passage is mainly about the early Chicago’s ______.

4 . As one of the most adventurous places to visit in South America, Patagonia deserves some serious travel time. These are my top recommendations for backpacking in Patagonia:

●Patagonia is probably the safest part of South America. I’ve hitchhiked in Chile without problems and would thoroughly recommend this as a form of transport. (Get tips on hitchhiking in South America here.)

●Car hire is also an interesting and rewarding way of seeing Patagonia, although booking in advance during high season is again recommended. I recommend using Rental Cars and suggest you check out this complete guide to planning a Patagonia road trip for essential tips and tricks.

●The shoulder seasons, October — November and March — April, are far quieter and cheaper for backpacking in Patagonia. Accommodation and agencies in some towns are sometimes not running in October or April though.

●Bus schedules vary depending on the season and change year-to-year. Always visit the bus station when you get to a new place to confirm timings and buy tickets for the next leg of your journey. It’s also important to plan additional days into your Patagonia backpacking trip in case you can’t travel on the day you had initially intended. For more information about this subject, check out this detailed guide about getting to Patagonia.

●Self-catering is by far the best way of keeping costs down on these Patagonia backpacking trips. Where possible, I’ve highlighted the best places to stock up on food. I’ve also written in more detail about visiting Patagonia on a budget.

●However, crossing the border between Argentina and Chile, you cannot take fresh fruit, vegetables, cheese or meat. It will be confiscated and if you don’t own up to it (particularly when heading into Chile), you may be fined.

5 . Time, wars and natural disasters have a bad effect on the artistic and cultural objects in the world. More than 1,000 years ago, a fire destroyed the Library of Alexandria in Egypt. In 1755, an earthquake destroyed Ribeira Palace in Lisbon, Portugal, along with artworks inside. In modern times, the Taliban destroyed the huge Bamiyan Buddhas in Afghanistan.

As we all know, museums play an important part in our daily lives. They keep evidence of culture and history and exhibit great works. A major goal of most museums in the world is to make sure that important historical objects do not disappear forever. The Uffizi Gallery in Florence, Italy, holds 1,250 pieces of ancient Greek and Roman sculptures. These objects have inspired artists and historians for many years. So the museum is working to make a complete and permanent record of the artworks so that the generations in the future will enjoy them as well.

The project is an effort of both the museum and the scientists from Indiana University in the United States. The team is using technology to create digital copies of the Uffizi’s ancient sculptures (雕像).

The process is called photogrammetry. At one time, this process was slow and expensive. But not anymore, said Professor Robert Frischer. He said photogrammetry is now much faster and cheaper. Now they can gather 3D data on a life-size sculpture in half an hour and they can process the data just in a couple of hours.

The images allow the viewer to examine the sculpture from all sides. And when the viewer zooms in (放大), the image becomes clearer. The Uffizi hopes to have the collection completed and available on the Internet by 2022.

1. What caused the Ribeira Palace to ruin?
A.A fire.B.An earthquake.C.A war.D.A heavy rain.
2. Which is a major role of most museums worldwide?
A.To improve people’s living conditions.B.To attract more artists and historians.
C.To make profits by selling great works.D.To save important historical objects.
3. What does the underlined word “permanent” in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A.Elegant.B.Valuable.C.Lasting.D.Effective.
4. What can we learn about photogrammetry?
A.It works much faster now.B.It is too costly to afford.
C.It can print a 3D sculpture.D.It is developed by Uffizi.

文章大意:这是一篇记叙文。文章主要讲述了作者去意大利的旅行使作者爱上意大利和其艺术,并给作者的写作带来灵感,从而改变了作者的一生。

8 . My first trip to Italy was with a friend when I was 19. When I got to Venice, I just couldn’t believe how beautiful it was. Seeing it was an experience in itself. We did all the touristy things, including visits to the galleries. Later, I made another trip to Italy. Walking around the streets of Rome, I really enjoyed getting to know the city. Rome has such amazing galleries. The Vatican Museum’s art gallery in particular is very special. You can see Caravaggio and all the greats there. The National Gallery of Modern Art has some wonderful art. I really had fallen in love with Italy and its art in a big way.

Sadly I had no artistic talent, but I just loved to be around it. I visited quite a few art galleries. By the time I started writing my first novel, Not a Penny More, Not a Penny Less, I was in my thirties. I always say “write about what you know”, so art, as well as business and politics, has been appearing in one form or another in my books across the years. One of the main characters in that first novel was an art gallery owner.

By the time I had written four books, I bonded with two art gallery goers over a love of art and Italy and eventually started going for almost an annual trip to different cities or towns in Italy. Over the past 40 years, we have visited about 60 cities and towns across Italy, some very small but in possession of remarkable masterpieces.

For the first book in the William Warwick series, I placed the detective(侦探) in the art and antiquities squad(文物组), where he was investigating the theft of a priceless Rembrandt painting, so art is still very much a theme in my work.

I’m fortunate to be able to indulge(尽情投入) my passion for Italy and its art, inspired by those early visits so many years ago.

1. How would the author describe his first two trips to Italy?
A.They made him attracted to Italy.B.They improved his skill in painting.
C.They enhanced his confidence in writing.D.They fired his enthusiasm for traveling.
2. What can be learned about the author’s first novel?
A.It is based on his experience.B.It attaches great value to family.
C.It fails to live up to his expectation.D.It centers on his childhood stories.
3. How did Italy’s art influence the author?
A.It strengthened his family bonds.B.It deepened his understanding of himself.
C.It provided inspiration for his writing.D.It unlocked his artistic potential and talent.
4. What would be the best title for the text?
A.Art made a man energetic.B.Travel opened my eyes to other cultures.
C.Writing inspired my passion for travel.D.An art-filled trip changed my life.

10 . I like flying to a foreign destination to visit the attractions during holidays, like millions of people are doing nowadays. The world has an amazing variety of must-see sights, from breathtaking natural scenery to impressive old cities, but too many of us are visiting them at the same time is putting pressure on these delicate and ancient places. Therefore, a number of beauty spots and historic sites have been introducing charges or restrictions on the tourists, which is meant to reduce overcrowding that can do harm to the surroundings of a place, protect old buildings in danger, and tidy up the mess that visitors leave behind.

The famous Italian city of Venice has, for example, introduced an entry fee of up to €10 for short-stay tourists. Citizens in Venice have long complained that the city is too crowded with tourists. Now, passengers arriving by cruise ship will have to pay a “landing tax”. Mayor Luigi Brugnaro says, “It would increase much-needed income to keep the city clean.”

Many cities in Europe have already charged a tax on tourists who stay in hotels and guest houses. This tax raises money to help protect the environment, pay for maintenance(维修) costs, or promote tourism. In Rome, new laws have been introduced to bring down bad tourist behaviour, such as forbidding drinking water from fountains and attaching “love padlocks” to bridges. Now the rules work well.

As more of us can now afford to travel, tourist destinations are getting busier, so maybe new laws and taxes on tourists are to be a necessary part of the sightseeing experience and benefit the beautiful attractions a lot.

1. How does the author lead in the topic of the passage?
A.By showing figures.B.By presenting facts.
C.By asking questions.D.By making comparison.
2. What causes the most damage to the ancient places according to the text?
A.Overcrowding of tourists.B.Lacking of maintenance.
C.Extra charges and restrictions.D.Too much rubbish left by the tourists.
3. Who will have to pay the new “landing tax” when visiting Venice?
A.Visitors staying in hotels for nights.
B.Visitors hoping to keep the city clean.
C.Visitors damaging the ancient walls.
D.Visitors arriving by cruise ship.
4. What is the author’s attitude towards the new laws and taxes on tourists?
A.Doubtful.B.Negative.C.Supportive.D.Unconcerned.
