I have travelled by myself many times but, on every occasion, there was someone to meet me at the other end of the journey. This time was different.

Last week I had a holiday from work, but    1    of my friends had the same week off. I decided that I still wanted to do something, so I booked a train ride to Toronto.

One week by myself. Would I be lonely? Quite the opposite. In fact, there are many benefits coming from traveling alone. Firstly, I was able to do whatever I wanted.     2     relying on someone else to suggest activities to do, I discovered my independence and developed map-reading skills that I didn’t know I had. I could get up and go to sleep when I wanted and I didn’t    3    wait for anyone else to shower and get ready every morning. Being in the safe environment of a hostel with like-minded travelers also offers a great opportunity to meet new people from all over the world,     4     can help combat loneliness.

In spite of the benefits, I found that there were also some disadvantages of travelling alone. I missed    5     (have) someone to talk to and to bounce ideas off. Experiences are often more enjoyable if they    6     (share), and part of the fun of travelling is the memories you have afterwards. Without a travel partner, I won’t be able to laugh about and remember my Toronto adventure with a friend or family member in the years    7     (come).

In addition, eating in a restaurant or cooking in the hostel was less fun    8    my own.

I am very proud of myself for travelling alone and I had a fantastic time in Toronto. However, in the future, I    9     (prefer) to travel with another person or in a small group. Who you travel with matters, though. I would rather    10     (do) it by myself than   go with someone who is lazy, difficult and argumentative.

VeniceThe Risk of the Disappearance of an Entire City

Venice is a stunning oddity. It is a city built atop around 120 islands, crisscrossed by 177 canals, and is best explored via the use of its 391 bridges. But the city is not well recently. Indeed,     1     drastic measures are taken, the city’s days could be numbered.

This is far from hyperbole(夸张): Venice is at very real risk of     2     (consume) by the sea. In worst-case scenario, the city could disappear beneath the waves by 2100. Meanwhile, many of its building are sinking     3     being damaged by the wakes of boats. It is also routinely overwhelmed by tourists, while its local population is in continual decline.

Globally, a lot of cities    4     (hit) by similar problems of sinking land and rising sea levels in Venice. Low-lying Jakarta(雅加达), for example, is in such a terrible situation that it is being replaced     5     the capital city of Indonesia by Nusantara, a city not yet even built.

In November 2019, Venice suffered its second-worst flooding. It created headlines around the world, with onlookers     6     (astonish) by the incredible images of Saint Mark’s Square, one of the city’s lowest lying areas, covered in feet of water.

The tide reached a peak height of 187cm above sea level,     7     (result) in more than 80% of the city being under water. A state of emergency was declared, and there was an estimated €1bn euros worth of damage.

The worst ever flooding event, which happened in 1966,     8     (see) water levels rise to 194cm above sea level, and is thought     9     (damage) at least three quarters of the city’s shops, businesses and studios.

10     a gap of over 50 years separated these events, recent trends suggest that we won’t have to wait half a century to see another disastrous flood. Since water levels started being officially recorded in 1923, they have reached 150cm or more on only 10 occasions, but five of those have been in the last three years.

On the Old Silk Road

I set off on my dream journey from London to Beijing in the peaceful days of 2019. Travelling overland, I wanted to experience the transitions between cultures, to see the legacy of exchange along the Silk Road trade routes    1    once connected China with the west.

My first major stop was Venice. The city is full of influences brought there by its many and varied visitors, especially     2    from the east. You can see these in the domes of Saint Mark's Cathedral and in Renaissance masterpieces with their brilliant blue dyes, produced from lapis lazuli mined 4,000 miles away in northern Afghanistan and brought to Venice along the Silk Road.

From Venice, I crossed the Adriatic to Pula and continued south-east.    3    (travel) across the Balkans on three 10-hour train journeys, I finally made my way to Istanbul. Old men playing cards, dogs and cats wandering the streets, fishers awaiting a catch, there is so much life to Istanbul, so much to drink in.

After crossing the Bosphorus into Asia, I was welcomed by the mythical countries of Middle East. Along the way, we passed trade stops    4    (date) from the 13th century. These were the original travel camps, where Silk Road traders would rest, wash, pray, share gossip and be isolated before entering cities     5    they carried dangerous diseases.

My next stop was Urumqi,    6    17-hour train ride away along the northern edge of the Taklamakan desert. The word Taklamakan translates as “    7    goes in does not come out”. Many have lost their lives attempting to cross it but those days are mostly in the past. My train,    8    its risky appearance, delivered me safely to my destination.

9    the Taklamakan desert ends, the Gobi desert begins. I was now on the final stretch of my journey, heading east on China's high-speed rail network. It took about 10 days to cross China and reach Beijing. I, by the time of my arrival,    10    (cover) 25,000 miles by car, bus, train, boat, horse, camel and, yes, two flights, across 16 countries. My dream of crossing Eurasia was fulfilled. I had 50,000 photos to edit and an exhibition to develop.

A Changing City

For centuries, Beijing has been the promised land of China. Originally a walled bastion for emperors and officials, it remains a majestic political and architectural marvel. Today, people from the countryside still flock to the city in search of the elusive pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. The lure of the capital proves too enticing. Meanwhile, down the road by the Friendship Store, smartly     1    (dress) customers clutching mobile phones head for the nearest banquet or disco.

Perhaps nowhere else in China more than in Beijing is the generation gap    2    (visible). Appalled by the current drive to 'modernize', many older people still wax euphoric(兴高采烈地谈论) about the years of sacrifice for the socialist revolution. But many youngsters are more interested --like youngsters everywhere-- in money, motorbikes, fashion, video games and rock music(though not necessarily in that order)

Foreigners seem to enjoy Beijing since the city offers so much to see and do. Things    3    (change) drastically in the last ten years or so. The Beijing of today is a forest of construction cranes, bulldozers and 24-hour work crews    4    (scramble) to build the new China. Plush shopping malls and five-star hotels rise     5    the rubble.    6     number of the road signs and advertising billboards are now in English.    7    one says about Beijing today, it probably won’t be true tomorrow. The city is changing so rapidly that it makes you dizzy.

Whatever impression you come away with, Beijing is one of the most fascinating places in China. It     8     be something of a showcase ,but what capital city isn’t? Within its environs you will find some of China's most stunning sights -the Forbidden City, the Summer Palace and the Great Wall, to name just a few .The city     9     offers so much of interest that the main complaint of most visitors is     10    they simply run out of time before seeing it all.

Sea Gypsies(吉普赛人)

We had been travelling for a few hours when on the horizon we     1    (spot) the group of small hand-built boats called kabang. The Moken are afraid of strangers, so     2     we approached, I called out some reassuring (安抚的) words in their language. The family elder, Gatcha, was at first unwilling to stop. Outsiders have been making use of the Moken throughout their history so he was used to keep his distance. But after hearing that I had been researching the Moken way of life     3     1982, in the end he accepted us into his “home”.

Home for this nomadic sea people are the kabang, where they live, eat, and sleep for eight months of the year. In these light craft, they travel across 800 islands that     4    (dot) across the Andaman Sea, off Myanmar, collecting what they need to survive and     5    (move) on. They get by only on what they take from the sea and beaches each day: fish, mollusks and sand-worms to eat; shells and oysters to trade with Malay and Chinese merchants. They accumulate little and live on land only during the monsoons (季风). But the world     6    (change) the Moekn way of life.

As divers and beachcombers, they pose no threat to others who share these waters. In spite of this, the authorities are always pressuring them to settle in one place. Ten years ago, 2,500 Moken were still leading a traditional life, but that population is declining slowly and now     7    (stand) at around 1,000. If they cease to be sea gypsies, it     8    (fear) that their unique understanding of the sea will disappear also. Moken people can dive to 20m without breathing equipment, and     9    (develop) extraordinary underwater vision. They are experts at reading changes in the sea, and it is even said they     10     predict a tsunami (海啸).

Norway is Teaching Travelers to Travel

After 15 people died during Easter in 1967, the Norwegian Trekking Association and the Red Cross announced their campaign ‘Welcome to the mountains, but be responsible’. Fjellvettreglene, the ‘mountain code’     1     encourages people to have a healthy and respectful relationship with nature, has since become a crucial part of Norwegian culture. It includes points such as bringing necessary equipment   to assist yourself and others,     2    (seek)shelter if necessary and feeling no shame in turning around.

Nationally, Norway     3     (experience) an 11% increase in tourism in the past decade. Trolltunga, a piece of rock,     4     (see) 1,800 visitors in one 2017 day alone. Why? Because people want the same picture they see on Instagram and Facebook. A lot don’t care     5     the experience of the hike. They just want proof that they did it.     6     this tourism boom is good for the economy, it has become a threat to   Norway’s natural environment.

7    (use) toilet paper, abandoned bottles and plastic bags can be found littered all around Trolltunga. And with the high amount of people who come unprepared for such an active hike, Norway’s leading hiking group, Friluftsliv, also has called for regulations on the number of tourists hiking to Trolltunga. Lasse Heimdal, leader of the outdoor organization said, “On a busy day, you may have to wait in line for an hour and a half just     8    (get) a picture. To control this, we’d like to regulate     9     people can hike in a day. Starting hike times should also have regulations so people don’t start too late and find     10     trapped here.”
