1 . It was summer, and my dad wanted to treat me to a vacation like never before. He decided to take me on a trip to the Wild West.
We took a plane to Albuquerque, a big city in the state of New Mexico. We reached Albuquerque in the late afternoon. Uncle Paul, my dad’s friend, picked us up from the airport and drove us up to his farm in Pecos.
His wife Tina cooked us a delicious dinner and we got to know his sons Ryan and Kyle. My dad and I spent the night in the guestroom of the farm house listening to the frogs and water rolling down the river nearby. Very early in the morning, Uncle Paul woke us up to have breakfast. "The day starts at dawn on my farm," he said. After breakfast, I went to help Aunt Tina feed the chickens, while my dad went with Uncle Paul to take the sheep out to graze(吃草). I was impressed to see my dad and Uncle Paul riding horses. They looked really cool.
In the afternoon, I asked Uncle Paul if I could take a horse ride, and he said yes, as long as my dad went with me. I wasn’t going to take a horse ride by myself anyway. So, my dad and I put on our new cowboy hats, got on our horses, and headed slowly towards the mountains. "Don’t be late for supper," Uncle Paul cried, "and keep to the track so that you don’t get lost!" "OK! " my dad cried back. After a while Uncle Paul and his farm house were out of sight. It was so peaceful and quiet and the colors of the brown rocks, the deep green pine trees, and the late afternoon sun mixed to create a magic scene. It looked like a beautiful woven(编织的) blanket spread out upon the ground just for us.
Suddenly a little rabbit jumped out in front of my horse.

One weekend in July, Jane and her husband, Tom, had driven three hours to camp(野营) by a lake in the forest. Unfortunately, on the way to the lake, they started to quarrel because of some different opinions. By the time they reached the lake, Jane was so angry that she said to Tom, “I'm going to find a better spot(地点) for us to camp”, and walked away.
With no path to follow, Jane just walked on for a long time. After she had climbed to a high place, she turned around, hoping to see the lake. To her surprise, she saw nothing but forest and, She suddenly realized that she was lost.
“Tom!” she cried.“Help!”
No reply. If only she hadn’t left her mobile phone in that bag with Tom. Jane kept moving, as night was beginning to fall, Jane was so tired that she had to stop for the night. Lying awake in the dark, Jane started to miss her husband, Tom. She wanted to tell him how much she loved him.
Jane rose(起身) at the break of day(黎明), hungry and thirsty. She could hear water trickling (滴落) somewhere at a distance. Quickly she followed the sound to a river. To her great joy, she also saw some berry bushes(浆果丛林). She drank and ate a few berries. Feeling stronger now, Jane began to walk along the river and hope it would lead her to the lake.
Fortunately,Jane heard a helicopter(直升飞机). Is that for me? Unfortunately, the trees made it impossible for people to see her from above. A few minutes later, another helicopter flew overhead. Jane took off her yellow blouse(衬衫), thinking that she should go to an open area and raised(举起) them if the helicopters came back again.

The bus ran along the winding mountain road. Trying not to look at the road, I stared out the large window at the tropical greenery (绿色植物) that covered the mountain.
Next to me, my mother was as absorbed by the view as I was. She had won the trip to Costa Rica as an award for her high performance at her job. She had decided to take me with her so that we could have some “girl time” together in a new place, and I couldn’t be happier to be in such a beautiful place.
Our bus came to a small parking lot surrounded by forest. Our guide had told the tour group that it was a cloud forest we were visiting. People started to rise from their seats and moved toward the door. My mom and I picked up our bags and started down the narrow passage, excited to finally get to go on a hike after the hour-long bus ride.
When the entire group had gathered outside, the guide smiled at us. “This is an active volcano we are standing on top of now,” he said. “You have the opportunity to explore without a guide. There are two paths you can follow when we get into the woods: the first is a shorter loop (环线) and will take you back here in forty minutes or so; the second will take you a longer way, and you should be back here in an hour and twenty minutes. The longer loop is very steep, but certainly doable. All of you should be back here in two hours, which should give you plenty of time to admire the beautiful wildlife of Costa Rica! Go ahead and get started!”
Mom looked at me uncertainly. “I assume you would like to do the longer loop,” she said after a moment. I nodded. We only had five days here, and I wanted to see as much as I could during that time. Mom finally agreed.

This past summer, I joined my sister's family for their annual Adirondack vacation in a rented cottage on a lake, the same place my family has stayed since I was a little kid. There are plenty of activities to keep everyone busy: swimming, fishing and sand castle building on the beach.
By the third day, I had noticed that my ten-year-old niece, Jannie, had spent most of her time watching cable TV and browsing through the gift shops in town. Not exactly the wilderness experience I remembered from my youth. So, at dinner, I told Jannie we should hike to the top of the mountain across the lake the following morning, which was called Rocky Point because the peak is bare and rock-covered.
"Well." replied Jannie, "Tomorrow there are some shows on the Disney Channel, so I'm going to be pretty busy."
"When your mother and I used to come here when we were your age, we were too busy swimming and hiking up mountains."
"Sounds more like punishment than a vacation." She shrugged her shoulders. "Besides, I don't think I can walk that far."
When I said it only took a half-hour of steady walking to get to the top. She grumbled, "Fine, I'll go." I knew she was agreeing just to shut me up, but I would take anything I could get.
The next morning was a perfect day for a hike, with sunshine and clear skies. I got up early and took some sandwiches and water bottles, which I tucked into my backpack along with the bug spray and the camera.
Jannie came shuffling downstairs, sighed dramatically, rolled her eyes and announced in a very unenthusiastic, robot-like voice. "I'm ready to go hiking, Uncle David." Anyway, we climbed into my car and drove to the trailhead about ten minutes away. As we stood at the edge of the parking lot and looked down the shaded trail that led into the woods. "I am still not sure this is a good idea, but if you and Mom could do it, I can too, I guess."

My cousin sister’s children were all married and settled abroad. She and my brother-in-law were very fond of going on short holidays to new places.
Once, they decided to take a three-day trip to a nearby small town which was famous for its historical_sites. They decided to take a road trip in their own car. They started on their journey early in the morning and by late evening, they had entered the town and checked in at a hotel.
Next morning, after breakfast, they took a road map of the town and its suburbs and started on their new_discovery. Since there were many places to see, it took them the whole day to finish their sightseeing.
By now, they had reached a suburb which had shops selling handmade items. My_sister was most interested in shopping. Her husband warned her to finish before it started getting dark. They were so lost in their shopping that they forgot about the time and started back only as the shops began to close.
They took the same route back to their hotel but somehow got lost on the way and realized that they were going around in a circle. They stopped the car to consult their map and then started again. After sometime, they realized it was no use to try and find their way back. They decided to ask someone for help but no one was out at that late hour.
They waited at a street corner for some time, and then decided to try again. My brother-in-law started the car but it couldn’t move. He got down and checked but could not find any fault. He sat back hopelessly, feeling worried about their predicament (困境). My sister was calm saying she was sure that they would get help.
