How the Victorians Invented the “ Staycation ”

Holidays feel like an important refreshment after such a tough year. While international travel is possible, it’s not exactly easy, so many are choosing to stay closer to home, taking a “staycation ”. This year holidaymakers are discovering the     1     of the UK’s coast and the beauty of its landscapes.

Domestic tourism as we know it began in the 19th century when the idea of the holiday was just becoming     2     . Expanding railways and changing work practices meant people had more leisure time for travelling. International travel was becoming easier but wasn’t     3     to all, so the Victorians chose to spend this newfound “ free ” time in the UK.

This gave way to the     4     of hot new holiday destinations, mostly on the UK’s coast. Great British seaside towns, from Bournemouth to Brighton, appealed to people with     5     of fun, sea and clean air — many of the things that continue to attract people today.

The great summer holiday as we know it was designed by the Victorians. The 19th century saw the industrial     6     and the rise of industrial capitalism, where factories were booming and work structures were more clearly and severely defined and presented. This led to the emergence of administrative     7     , like clerks, and an emerging middle class.

There was more     8     working time, including shift work in factories and time off on Sundays. As a result, working-class people had leisure time to use, and by the 1890s some skilled workers had half days on Saturdays, leading to the birth of the “ weekend ” — though this was not     9     until much later in the 20th century.

In 1871 the Bank Holidays Act was passed. This appointed certain days as holidays on which banks closed, though, over the years, more businesses began observing these days off work. Before 1830, banks closed only on the 40 saints’ days of the year, though by 1834 this was just four days, including Christmas day. From 1871, any day could be     10     a bank holiday, not just saints’ days.

The term ‘dark tourism’ is far newer than the practice, which long predates(早于) Pompeii's     1     as a dark attraction. Dr Philip Stone, perhaps the world’s leading academic expert on dark tourism, considers the Roman Colosseum to be one of first dark tourist sites, where people travelled long distances to watch death as sport. Later, until the late 18" century, the appeal was crueler in central London, where people paid money to sit in grandstands to watch mass hangings. Dealers would sell pies at the site, which was     2     where Marble Arch stands today.

It was only in 1996 that ‘dark tourism’ entered the scholarly vocabulary when two academics in Glasgow     3     it while looking at sites associated with the murder of John F.Kennedy. Those who study dark tourism     4     plenty of reasons for the growing phenomenon, including raised awareness of it as an identifiable thing.     5    to sites has also improved with the arrival of cheap air travel. It’s hard to imagine that the Auschwitz-Birkenau memorial and museum would now welcome more than two million visitors a year were it not for its     6     to Krakow’s international airport. Peter Hohenhaus, a     7     travelled dark tourist based in Vienna, also points to the broader rise in off-the-beaten track tourism, beyond the territory of popular guidebooks and TripAdvisor rankings. “A lot of people don't want     8     tourism and that often means engaging with places that have a more recent history.” he says. “ You go to Sarajevo and most people remember the war being in the news so it feels closer to one’s own biography.” Hohenhaus is also a fan of beauty in decay, the contemporary cultural movement in which urban ruins have become     9     matter for expensive coffee-table books and a thousand Instagram accounts. The crossover with death is clear. “ I have always been drawn to ruined things,” the 54-year-old says. No Destination Is the Wrong Place to Go

Everyone has a list of destinations they promise themselves to visit during their lifetime. People travel for endless reasons, whether it’s to experience different cultures, see natural     1    of the world,or learn about heritage. All these ideas are exciting options, because in every situation, you will be     2     to something unfamiliar and life-changing.

I recently had a discussion with someone about my student abroad experience. They listened as I recounted my     3     around Italy and my additional travels. “I would love to do something like that,” they said, “but I feel like everyone goes to Europe now. It’s not really that     4     anymore.”

I was pretty shocked by such a statement.Since when was traveling anywhere not cool enough?Naturally, the older you get ,the more people you’re going to know, especially those who have traveled to     5     parts of the world. However, does standing underneath the Eiffel Tower have less value to me because so many travelers have done the exact same thing?Or climbing and taking a picture at the top of the Florence Duomo also means the decreased value?

My answer:absolutely not.Reading travel blogs and    6     at photographs is helpful and enjoyable, but nothing close to     7     experiencing that place. The truth is,every new destination is unique, and it’s nearly impossible to make a “wrong” decision.

It is important to focus on your own personal journey, not the experience of others.Every city, state, and country, has thousands of different things to     8    .The places you will visit all have fascinating people, different kinds of delicious food you’ve never tried before, and unbelievable history that will blow your mind.Travelling will nevertheless change you and leave an imprint on the way you see the world—no matter where you go.

Whether the destinations we desire are     9     simple or obscure(不清楚的)in the eyes of others, every experience has its own unique value.Keep your adventures     10     while also taking advantage of the opinions and advice of others. In every new destination, you will find a new part of yourself.Truly,no destination is the wrong place to go.

With its wonderful Georgian and Victorian architecture, and winding medieval streets, it’s easy to see why Edinburgh has been listed as a World Heritage Site.

Bhutan is the country of a stunning and wide variety of flora and fauna, amazing architecture, ancient traditions, remarkably friendly people and unique colorful culture. It is     1     the worlds’ happiest country and also one of the greenest, for the Himalayan kingdom is not only carbon neutral, but carbon     2    .

What is also noteworthy is that this is happening despite increasing tourism. One of the ways foreigners can contribute to the country’s conservation efforts is to visit the miraculous land. As a travel destination, Bhutan remains unique,     3     between its industrialized neighbors China and India. The isolated nation only opened up to foreign visits in 1974 and allowed TVs in 1999.

Bhutan has built sustainability into its national     4    . “Our enlightened monarchs (君王) have worked tirelessly to develop our country,     5     economic growth carefully with social development, environmental sustainability, and cultural preservation, all within the framework of good governance,” Tshering Tobgay, Bhutan’s Prime Minister said at a 2016 TED Talk. One of the ways Bhutan has achieved this is controlled, low     6     tourism.

Unless you’re from India, Bangladesh, or the Maldives, you’ll need a visa to explore this wonderland—there is no independent travel. Aside from the visa ($40), tourists must pay an additional $200 to $250 “Minimum Daily Package Fee” and book through an officially     7     tour operator. The fee can confuse or put off potential visitors, so it’s worth clarifying what it is. It covers lodging in three-star accommodations, all meals, a(n)     8     guide, camping and hiking equipment, domestic travel (excluding flights), and taxes and fees. A daily sustainable development fee of $65 is also included in the package. This goes towards     9     education, healthcare, and poverty alleviation, along with the building of infrastructure to     10     growing tourism.

Sept 27 is World Tourism Day. Of course, travel isn’t a new discovery. Imagine how Italian traveler Marco Polo must have felt when he found himself on Chinese     1    , seeing a way of life quite different from anything he’d seen before.

And how     2     must it have been to listen to Zhang Qian when he returned to China from his journey through Central Asia and West Asia? His brain must have been packed with everything he’d seen and heard, leading to the     3     of the Silk Road.

Travel is one of the most exciting experiences a human being can have. Nowadays, more people are traveling than ever before. By train, plane and car, people all around the globe are     4     to places that people didn’t even know     5     a few centuries ago, or only knew from books.

Some people have traveled all over the world, and travel is a way of life to them. They perhaps know what to expect before they travel. That’s why the best travel is when it’s for the first time. Imagine a person who has always wanted to travel to the United States. Of course, they’ve probably seen the Statue of Liberty a thousand times on the TV, and the White House, and all the other famous     6     But none of that would compare to the     7     of looking out of the cabin window as the plane lands, watching the cities and streets of the real America come into     8    .

Although travel is often just for fun, it’s also     9    . We may not know that we are getting an education, but we still are.

We’re learning every day: new words in a new language, new people, and new ways of life. But this learning takes place in the school of the world, not the classroom. One of the lessons we learn is     10     a moral one. As we get to know foreign places, we come to understand that there are many different ways to live, and that the way we live isn’t necessarily the best way. The British politician Benjamin Disraeli summed this up well when he said, “Travel teaches toleration.”
