文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章介绍了英国泰晤士河南岸的摩天轮——伦敦眼。

1 . The London Eye, formerly known as the Millennium Wheel, is on the South Bank of the River Thames. At an overall height of 135 meters, the London Eye was the world’s tallest Ferris wheel from 1999, when it was built, until 2006, when it was surpassed (超过) by the Star of Nanchang, in Nanchang, China. It is one of London’s most popular tourist attractions.

What is now called the London Eye originated as a work sent by David Marks and Julia Barfield of Marks Barfield Architects in 1993 to a competition. The competition is supported by The Sunday Times and Great Britain’s Architecture Foundation, for a new landmark in memory of the millennium (千禧年) in London. Although no winner was declared, Marks and Barfield carried out the development of the project themselves and found the site where the wheel now stands. Most of the money was provided by British Airways.

Construction began in 1998, and the wheel was put together over the river before being pulled up.The London Eye was ceremonially “opened” by Prime Minister Tony Blair on December 31, 1999, but didn’t admit its first paying passenger until March 9,2000. Originally scheduled to be taken apart after five years, it was kept in place because of continued popularity. In 2006 an LED lighting system was installed in order to make the wheel more noticeable after dark.

The wheel rests on two supports, which are fixed firmly to a foundation on the riverbank and lean (倾斜) out over the river at an angle of 65°. The power to turn the wheel is sent through rubber tires that are placed on the base of the structure. Placed on the wheel are 32 eggshaped “capsules”, as the cabins that carry the passengers are called. Their number agrees with the 32 boroughs (自治市) that (together with the City of London) make up Greater London. Each capsule can hold as many as 25 passengers. The wheel moves so slowly — two circles per hour — that it needn’t stop for passengers to get on or off, except for those with disabilities.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。随着世界的发展,澳大利亚已经成为人们首选的旅游胜地,文章介绍了越来越多人去澳大利亚旅行的原因、澳大利亚吸引游客的一些优势,并给游客一些旅行建议。

5 . Australia has become one of the most attractive countries for tourism in the world and the reasons are simple: For a long time traditional tourist destinations such as Europe, the USA, England, and many others, used to attract tourists for their history, architecture, shopping, beauty, beaches and development. Meanwhile Australia was considered too far and expensive to go, except for Asian residents. With the world changing significantly, few places are left untouched today.

Travelling in Australia is easy, safe, and Australia is full of fantastic places to visit. As a developed country, Australia offers what is necessary for any travellers. If you just want to visit cities and go shopping, you will have cities with the best quality of life in the world. If you want to go for sports and have plenty of fun, you will have a ball over here. The adventures, the comfort, the fun, are just waiting for you. If you have a very limited time, we suggest you have a look at our page where we present some suggestions for what can be done in just a few days’ trip.

Three months wouldn’t be enough to know Australia very well. The country is so big that even today there are lands never foot-stepped yet. Of course most can’t see the whole country at once. The best way to do it is to make a plan for cities, landscapes, national parks, small towns and cultural places. Otherwise you may spend hours and hours on a road without any attractions instead of doing the same trajectory (轨迹) by plane saving time and money.

As is said above, travelling in Australia is very easy, and you don’t need to worry too much about reservations except in the holiday periods and during some school breaks when you may find fewer options, or if you are going to do some parts by plane. Accommodation of all levels and prices is also plentiful, and depends on the place you go.

1. What is the author’s purpose of writing this passage?
A.To show travelling in Australia is easy and safe.

2. Many tourists turn their eyes to Australia .
A.because they take an interest in the wonderful architecture

A.the country is convenient for you in many ways
B.the country can offer you kinds of high-quality goods

4. What does the third paragraph imply?

7 . Little remains of the original Potala Palace built in the seventh century, as a place of meditation by King Songtsen Gampo on the occasion of his marriage to Princess Wencheng of the Tang Court. Standing atop the Red Hill in Lhasa, the current structure dates from the 17th century; it was rebuilt by the 5th Dalai Lama and became the Winter Palace for Dalai Lamas from that time. The 13-storey building of 1,000 rooms can be seen from many miles away.

There are small palaces within grand palaces. The Potala stands so high that it looks like a magnificent castle in the heavens. The statues of King Songtsen Gampo and Princess Wencheng are the worship. Among the eight tomb pagodas (塔) of the Dalai Lamas, the tomb of the fifth Dalai Lama is the most extravagant (奢侈的), standing 14 metres high.

10 . There is so much to see and do on the Disney Dream. During my 2-day cruise (乘船游览) I tried to experience as much as I could. Here are some of my favourite things about the Disney Dream.

AquaDuck

The first water coaster at sea will not disappoint you! The coaster spans (横跨) 765 feet, giving you a bird’s-eye view of the decks (甲板) below. At one point, the ride takes you 12 feet over the side of the ship.

Oceaneer Club & Oceaneer Lab

I was totally blown away by the childcare on the Disney Dream. The best part is the Oceaneer Club and Oceaneer Lab for kids aged 3-10. Once inside, kids are free to run from club to club. There are games, activities and crafts (手工) that will keep your children entertained for hours.

Pink at The District

There are five places at The District, but my favourite was Pink—the champagne bar. This place is the perfect spot for an after-dinner drink with friends.

Nemo’s Reef

One of my biggest disappointments at other cruise ships is the lack of water play for young kids. Every ship usually has a pool and water slide, but they are often overcrowded. Nemo’s Reef is a covered water play area with no standing water. Even my six-year-old son had a good time!

“Disney’s Believe” Stage Show

Entertainment on cruise ships can be not very good, but not on the Disney Dream. What’s new on the Disney Dream is “Disney’s Believe”—a musical show featuring your favourite Disney characters.

If you’re on the Disney Dream next time, don’t miss them. Have fun!

1. Who would most probably like AquaDuck?
A.People loving travelling.
B.People loving watching birds.
C.People wanting an exciting ride.
D.People wanting to run on the decks.
2. Where would one go to have a drink with friends?
A.AquaDuck.B.Pink at The District.
C.Nemo’s Reef.D.Oceaneer Club & Oceaneer Lab.
3. Why did the author think highly of Nemo’s Reef?
A.It’s not open to adults.B.It has standing water.
C.It has water play for kids.D.It has many Disney characters.
