文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章讲述英国著名的规划专家埃比尼泽·霍华德于1898年提出了“花园城市”的理论。该理论可视作现代城市规划的开端,并极大地影响了现代城市规划体系和理论。

1 . The garden city was largely the invention of Ebenezer Howard (1850-1928). After an unsuccessful attempt to make a living as a farmer, he moved to Chicago, where he saw the reconstruction of the city after the disastrous fire of 1871. In those days, it was nicknamed “the Garden City”, almost certainly the source of Howard’s name for his later building plan of towns. Howard developed his design in the 1880s and 1890s, drawing on ideas popular at the time, but creating a unique combination of designs.

The nineteenth-century poor city was a terrible place, dirty and crowded; but it offered economic and social opportunities. At the same time, the British countryside was in fact equally unattractive: Though it promised fresh air and nature, it suffered from agricultural depression (萧条) and it offered neither enough work and wages, nor much social life. Howard’s idea was that a group of people should set up a company, borrowing money to establish a garden city in the depressed countryside; far enough from existing cities to make sure that the land was bought at the bottom price.

Garden cities would provide a central public open space, radial avenues and connecting industries. They would be surrounded by a much larger area of green belt, containing not merely farms but also some industrial institutions. As more and more people moved in, the garden city would reach its planned limit; then, another would be started a short distance away. Thus, over time, there would develop a vast planned house collection, extending almost without limit; within it, each garden city would offer a wide range of jobs and services, but each would also be connected to the others by a rapid transportation system, thus giving all the economic and social opportunities of a big city.

1. How did Howard get the name for his building plan of garden cities?
A.By using the nickname of the reconstructed Chicago.
B.Through his observation of the country life.
C.Through the combination of different ideas.
D.By taking other people’s advice.
2. What does the underlined phrase “drawing on” in Paragraph 1 probably mean?
A.Making comments on.B.Giving an explanation of.
C.Giving a description of.D.Making use of.
3. What can we learn about garden cities from the last paragraph?
A.Each one would continue to become larger.
B.People would live and work in the same place.
C.Their number would continue to rise.
D.Each one would contain a certain type of business.
4. What could be the best title for the passage?
A.City and Countryside.B.The Invention of the Garden City.
C.A New City in Chicago.D.A Famous Garden City in England.

文章大意:本文是一篇新闻报道。文章主要介绍了一种近年来在中国大学生中兴起的一种新型旅游方式——特种兵旅游。

2 . Recently, a new kind of tourism has sprung (出现) up in China. Called “special forces (特种兵) style tourism”, this new kind of tourism is mainly about visiting many places of interest in a short period, most often on weekends. Most of these visitors are college students.

Yu Yinghua, a college student in Shanghai, is one of them. The 22-year-old started the “special forces style tourism” in March after she was attracted by such experiences of some travel bloggers. “After staying a long time at school, I’m hungry to take trips in my spare time,” said Yu, “Now it’s time! Spring has come and we can go out to enjoy the beautiful natural scenery.”

Most of her trips were inspired by understanding from her daily life, such as a place mentioned in a chat with friends. “But making a plan spot in the city, she was able to find a lot of information and learn more about these sites. That would help her save time when traveling on-site and enjoy the sites better.”

Unlike Yu who traveled in nearby cities, Chen Junjun, a doctoral student in Shanghai likes to travel far to get rid of academic stress. In April, the 24-year-old took a two-day trip to Xi’an, Shaanxi province. During her trip, she visited all the scenic sites in the city. “With many academic responsibilities, such a trip can bring color to my life.” said Chen.

Even so, the 24-year-old added that such tourism is not suitable for everyone. Chen said that it’s labor-consuming (耗费体力的) as visitors have to visit as many sites as possible in a short period. To some degree such trips are not as flexible (灵活的) as days-long trips in which you can change your plan as you like. “Thus, a great deal of energy and a calm mind are needed for this kind of tourism,” said Chen.

Black Sands in Central America

Lush green forests, amazing surf breaks, and village ruins greet visitors to El Salvador. Compared to the popular Costa Rica, the country’s coastline is a surf-enthusiast’s dream. If you’d rather be under the water than gliding along it, then grab the chance to dive in a live volcano. Lake Ilopango sits 460 meters above sea level, near the capital of San Salvador. Freshwater sponges, along with freshwater fish, lava flows along underwater cliffs and pillow lava deposits are just some of the incredible sites. Thanks to the hot vents in the lake bed the water is a balmy 85F.

Rainbow Mountains in China

Hike the multicolor peaks in Zhangye, Gansu Province, which is also home to hidden caves, rock formation, and temples balanced precariously on cliff faces. The otherworldly colors look just like a painted rainbow and give Peru’s much-visited mountains of the same name a run for their money.

Untouched Paradise in Oceania

Made up of 10 islands, two large and eight smaller ones, there are very few tourists who make it all the way to Samoa. Packed with natural wonders: ocean trenches, epic waterfalls, and stunning beaches, it’s a must do for outdoor enthusiasts. There’s ample hiking too, from World War II heritage trails to a “cloud rainforest” hike and a trek up to the peak of Mount Alava.

Red Crabs in Australia

Technically an external territory of Australia, Christmas Island is dominated by around 50 million red crabs. Head to this remote island to witness the stunning spectacle of their annual migration, plus keep an eye out for manta rays, dolphins, and whale sharks that patrol the 80km of coastline. It’s not an easy place to get to, but the near-deserted beaches and friendly community make it worth the adventure.
